THE LUNCH BUNCH - SHIP ROCK GRILLE
Friday, March 22 at 12:00 PM

Come join The Lunch Bunch at Ship Rock Grille, Red Rocks, Morrison. Awesome scenery! Come and celebrate the spring time change!  Carpooling would be good if you need to be dropped off at the top, since the stairs from the lower lot are quite steep. There is also some handicapped parking at the top, but it fills up quickly. If we have enough that need a ride, possibly the church van could be used.   Sign-up sheet is in the Fellowship Hall or contact Marcia Loomis at 303-898-3748.   This will probably be the only time you see this in the Happenings, since it's so close, so make a note!   Should be a fun lunch!

PIZZA AND MOVIE NIGHT
Friday, April 5 at 6:00 p.m.

Please join UMCE in a Family Night of free pizza and a movie on April 5. Pizza will be served at 6:00, and we will show the movie "Mary Poppins Returns" at 6:30. Please sign up with this website: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508054CAFA72CAA8-family1 or sign up on the church bulletin board.

UMM BREAKFAST:  SHOW & TELL
Saturday, April 6 from 8:00-12:00 PM

Come join us to get to know three of our UMCE veterans, Pem Dunn, Jim Ament and Dave Loomis, a lot better! Breakfast is served at 8:00 a.m., and the presentation begins around 8:30 a.m. Bill Graff and Mac DeGuire will be handling kitchen duties.

LENTEN CONCERT & LUNCHEON
Wednesday, April 10 at 12:00 p.m.

The Lenten Concert series has been condensed into a single service this year. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 10 at 12:00 p.m. to enjoy music performed by our gifted musicians followed by a free, hot lunch. Performing selections on the piano will be Terry Vogt, Keron Sandusky, Joyce Scheel, and Karen Hines. Linda Bloemendaal will perform a selection on the flute.  This will be an excellent opportunity to invite friends to join us for a peaceful, enjoyable break from their day.

JOY TEAM IN ACTION
Saturday, April 27  and Saturday, June 22

F or the past few months the JOY Team has been planning for 2 big events to support the lifesaving work of JOY International, the organization based in Conifer that rescues and restores the lives of children, teens and young women who are victims of sex trafficking.   As an outreach of Church and Society, our task is to raise awareness of and outrage against these crimes.

A community wide program, A CALL TO ACTION: FIGHT CHILD TRAFFICKING will be hosted by our church on Sat. April 27.   Dr. Jeff Brodsky, the founder of JOY International, will speak to adults in the morning {9:30 - 11:30}, and middle & high school youth in the afternoon  {noon-2pm}. His talk will be age appropriate, instructive and emotionally moving. Please plan to attend and bring friends!

The "main event" will be a Barefoot Mile fundraiser on Sat. June 22, starting at 9:00 am at Marshdale Park. This is a fun, family-friendly event with music, food, face painting, balloons and a great playground!  People of all ages get sponsors and walk the mile in solidarity with the children who wait for rescue. This is the FIRST  BAREFOOT MILE FUNDRAISER  in our mountain community, and we want it to be super successful!!

The JOY Team is comprised of 16 members representing 5 churches. From UMCE : Tracy Atlas, Bill Graf, Carolyn Hohne, Dave Loomis, Ted Miller, Arlene Sutherland, Tonya Sweater and Jan Thurling. Speak to any member for more info.  We are thankful for the members from Bergen Church, CO Life Church, Lutheran Church and Platte Canyon Community Church.  God has brought us together for this work, and we ask you to join us by spreading the word to those you love and care about.

SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM FOR EChO
Various dates in June, July and August

In October 2010, a Stone Soup ministry was started to make healthy soup for EChO clients and volunteers.   Since that time five local churches have been providing soup from September through May.   However, hungry people still come in to the food bank during the summer months.   Last year our church was asked to be included in the first summer lunch program for EChO. It was so well received by our church and EChO that we have been asked back this year for the June thru August months to prepare a meal for clients and volunteers.   Our obligation will be to prepare either salads or sandwiches twice in our appointed weeks. Last year the generosity of donations from our church family completely covered the cost of food.   The schedule for UMCE is June 24 & 27, July 22 & 25, and August 26 & 29. Contact Ruthanne Huber at [email protected] if you are interested in being a part of this project.

BLESSING BAG SUPPLIES NEEDED!

The Missions Committee is seeking travel-sized  shampoos/conditioners/lotions to use in Blessing Bags.  If you're traveling, bringing home your unused hotel supplies would be great.  We'll soon have a fresh supply of Blessing Bags ready for you to leave in your car, and when you see someone in need at a stoplight, giving them a bag brings joy to them...and you.  Donations of supplies all kinds are always welcomed.   Thank you for your support!

GUATEMALA ENGLISH CAMP - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
JUNE 28 - JULY 7, 2019

COTH is very thankful and excited about the 13 volunteers they have so far (including 3 adults from UMCE with two granddaughters).   However, they are hoping and praying for more volunteers so that they can add a new group of students for this year. You can still sign-up for this wonderful, amazing mission trip with Pura Vida Ministries:   https://www.puravida.org/trip.html?trip_id=75. Volunteers pay their own way, but you can also help by donating to Pura Vida towards a volunteer's trip. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Eaton (303-669-0063) or Joanna Cook (303-588-4137). The English Camp grew out of Church of the Hills and COTH is still considered the sponsor of this great program, but it is exciting to see this become an inter-church mission trip! Your prayers are vital to this work!

FOOTLOOSE & FANCY-FREE FUN!

Yes!  Back by popular demand!  Footloose & Fancy-Free Fun

If you've been involved with this group of mostly retirees in the past, (but we'll let you go if you're not quite there yet) then you know how much fun, food & fellowship we have had! If you've not heard of some of our adventures of the past, check the Fellowship Hall info board.   We make plans for a day out, a weekend, and even a week in the past. We always have a good time together. If you have a place or adventure that you would like to do, just put it out there and we'll see how many we can get to participate and then JUST DO IT! It's very informal, go on the adventures you like or pass for another one.

We welcome ideas from everyone for a fun time someplace. Don't hesitate to put out your ideas and then be ready to join in the fun and get to know that person that sits "on the other side" by more than a handshake on Sundays!

Don't Panic--This group does not have meetings ! (unless we need one for special event plans) ALL EVENTS ARE FUN AND OPTIONAL! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!   WE CAN CARPOOL & OR USE THE UMCE VAN!

The following is just some of the ideas of places to visit & learn about. Even if you've been to some of these before, it's fun to go with a group.

Science and religion are two different ways in which we deal with reality. We will discuss how both obtain knowledge and understanding of that reality. As well as what assumptions they make and their objectives.  We need both to maintain healthy physical and spiritual lives.

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

An Old Time Irish Protestant-Catholic Story -- Happy St. Patrick's Day!

An old Irish man is lying in bed, very ill. His son is sitting at his bedside, expecting the end to come at any moment. The old man looks up at the boy and says, "Son, it's time for you to get me a Protestant minister."

The son is astounded. "But, Dad!" he protests, "You've been a good Catholic all your life! You're delirious. It's a priest ye be wanting now, not a minister." The old man looks up at him and says, "Son, please. It's me last request. Get a minister for me!" "But, Dad," cries the son, "Ye raised me a good Catholic. You've been a good Catholic all your life. Ye don't want a minister at a time like this!" The old man manages to croak out the words, "Son, if you respect me and love me as a father, you'll go out and get me a Protestant minister right now."

The son relents and goes out and gets the minister. They come back to the house, and the minister goes upstairs and converts him. As the minister is leaving the house, he passes Father O'Malley coming quickly through the door. The minister stares solemnly into the eyes of the priest. "I'm afraid you're too late, Father," he says. "He's a Protestant now."

Father O'Malley rushes up the steps and bursts into the old man's room. "Pat! Pat! Why did ye do it?" he cries. "You were such a good Catholic! We went to St. Mary's together! You were there when I performed my first mass! Why in the world would ye do such a thing like this?" "Well," the old man says as he looks up at his dear friend. "I figured if somebody had to go, it was better one of *them* than one of *us*."

Blessings,

Pastor Deb Olenyik
