Top Ten 2018
Public voting for Virginia's Top Ten Endangered artifacts is coming soon! Keep an eye out for the voting platform, where you can explore each artifact and place your vote. Voting this year will be from January 22-31. Thanks to our sponsors the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond and the Blandford Rees Foundation, we are once again able to provide conservation awards to those sites who receive the most votes. Virginia Association of Museums Advocacy Day
Join us on February 7th for Virginia Museum
Advocacy Day. We will have advocacy training, will be introduced in the house and senate chambers, and spend the afternoon doing visits to legislators. The evening will be capped off with a reception at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture to honor our Top Ten Endangered Artifacts honorees for 2018. More details to follow!

VAM's 2019 Annual Conference will take a "citywide" approach as we travel to Lynchburg, Virginia. The conference has all of the educational elements you are used to, and will include tons of chances to network with your colleagues and our business members. By highlighting and making use of a variety of sites in the downtown area of this infinitely walkable city, conference guests will get to experience sessions, tours, and evening events at such historic sites as the newly restored Academy Center of the Arts and Virginian Hotel, as well as Amazement Square, Lynchburg Museums, and more! The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works
(FAIC) is excited to announce that applications are open for the 2019
Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) program from November 1st 2018, with a deadline of February 1, 2019.
The CAP program is open to small and medium-sized museums, zoos, aquariums, and botanical gardens in the United States. Participating institutions receive funding for a general conservation assessment from a qualified collections and building assessor. The assessment is a study of all the institution's collections, buildings, and building systems, as well as its policies and procedures relating to collections care.
Help locate Virginia's historic African American schools:
In 2013, we listed historic African American/Rosenwald schools on our
Most Endangered Historic Places
list. Between 1917 and 1932 and in the midst of racial segregation and chronic under-funding of African American schools, more than 380 Rosenwald schools were built in rural areas across Virginia. After the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, most schools fell out of use and many were lost.Ask your friends, family and neighbors if they remember a Rosenwald school in your community and please share any information that you gather with us. Even if the school is gone, we would like to know its history and where it once stood. Send any information that you have to Lisa Bergstrom at

American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Advocacy Days registration is now open! Museums Advocacy Day February 25-26, 2019
is a unique opportunity to join with other museum professionals and supporters to make the case for museums. Museums Advocacy Day is inspiring, energizing and practical. The program includes two full days of timely issue briefings, expert advocacy training, networking with peers from your state and region, and the opportunity to make your voice heard to elected officials and their staff during Capitol Hill visits scheduled by AAM. Register today and unite with others from the museum field as one voice to reaffirm our value, collective contributions, and aspirations.
Virginia History Day is recruiting volunteer judges to participate in its District contests held around the state in March 2018, as well as additional judges for the state-level competition held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond on April 27, 2019. This is an excellent opportunity for museums of all sizes to represent themselves within their communities, meet history-minded students, teachers, and families, and become familiar with the research process required of Virginia History Day participants.

Dr. Sarah Childers, as Lead Veterinarian
for the Virginia Living Museum.
Congratulations: Lin Ezell, Director of the Marine Corps Museum on her retirement on December 17, 2018. The current Deputy Director, Charles Grow, will serve as the interim director while the museum conducts a nation wide search for a new director.
Congratulations: Former VAM intern Crystal Douglas graduated Magna Cum Laude, from VCU in December. She also won an award for exemplifying high standards for the Robertson School of Media and Culture. Way to go Crystal! We are very proud of you!

Virginia Conservation Association
VCA
will offer two annual scholarships of $250 each to be used towards costs associated with furthering education in the field. Use of funds may include conference or class fees or another related use as approved by the Board. Applicants must be VCA Student Members to apply. Applications will be accepted through January 31, 2019.
College Arts Association
CAA
recently announced the launch of a $1 million fund
that will pay grants to art history faculty and students to visit shows specifically relevant to their course material. The fund, which will hand out grants of up to $10,000 for eligible scholars and students, came about thanks to a major gift from an anonymous donor.
Virginia Humanities
Discretionary Grant Program -
Smaller grants of up to $3,000. There is no deadline for this program; applications are accepted at any time. Applicants should contact
Virginia Humanities staff
in advance before submitting a Discretionary Grant proposal.
IMLS Inspire Grants
Inspire! Grants for Small Museums is a special initiative of the Museums for America program. This special initiative is designed to inspire small museums to apply for and implement projects that address priorities identified in their strategic plans. Inspire! has three project categories:
Lifelong Learning,
Community Anchors and Catalysts,
Collections Stewardship and Public Access.
