Art Gallery
Jane Hogan has been sharing her collages with friends and family for
over thirty years, and her photographs have been shared in half that time. So it is with great delight that she is able to share some of her works with us at the Somers Library through the month of January.
Jane has been a Somers resident for fourteen years. While not an artist by profession or degree, she has always enjoyed the arts. She takes photographs of anything that catches her eye - previously from a camera, but now mostly from her iPhone.
The collage work she creates is very personal since it is usually created with a friend or family member in mind. Her later works are annual Christmas cards she has created, in addition to works that reflect current (now past) events.  This will be Jane's first solo public Art show. Her works have previously been displayed at the Putnam Arts Council in Mahopac, NY, and she has had her work accepted into a juried art show there. She would like to thank the Somers Library for the opportunity to show some of her work in the hope that it
will inspire others to get out there and create their own.
There will be an opening reception on Saturday, January 5th from 2-4pm in the library program room. Jane's work will be displayed from January 5th - February 1st. She would love for you to see the pieces in person at the library, but if weather is keeping you inside, you can also view her work on her Instagram
account @janecollagecards
News from the Somers Library Foundation

Welcoming a New Year offers a wonderful opportunity to make new choices and take new chances in life. Whether you reflect proudly on your many accomplishments in the past year or you can't wait to turn a new page and look toward the future, the new calendar year is an opportunity to do the things that might have been on your back burner. If you've been thinking about volunteering for years or have been contemplating your resolutions for the 2019, consider volunteering for the Somers Library Foundation. Volunteers were vital to the success of the Somers Library Foundation's 2018 Book Sale and 5K Trail Run, as well as other Foundation events and activities in the past year.

Volunteerism has countless benefits to the community and also to the health and happiness of individuals who commit to volunteering. Did you know that people who volunteer report physical, mental, and emotional health benefits? Doing Good is not only good for your surrounding community, Doing Good is Good for You!

For more information about the many ways you can volunteer, please visit our website or

Annual Appeal

The Friends of the Somers Library have begun their annual appeal. Thanks to the generosity of their many donors, they are able each year to fund the many fabulous programs that children, teens and adults enjoy and that are not funded in our town budget, as well as providing gifts to the library such as the new landscaping. If you have not already received their mailing, you can pick up an appeal brochure at the libraries. Donations of any amount can be sent to the Friends care of Somers Library, P O Box 443, Somers, NY 10589 or via PayPal at [email protected].   Any questions can be sent to [email protected] .

The Friends of the Somers Library is a nonprofit organization chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Their mission is to provide support for the needs of a contemporary library... to benefit the diverse interests of our town and to keep our library vibrant.

A special shout-out to T3 LogoWear for donating the bookmarks that went out in the annual appeal.

Somers High School Students' Volunteerism
Makes a Difference at the Library

Nate and Daniel Schwartz, juniors at Somers High School, have volunteered at the Somers Library for the past three years. The boys saw a request for volunteers to help the Friends of the Somers Library set up and clean up for all of their programs. Over the course of the three years that the Daniel and Nate have been volunteering in this capacity, they have worked on over thirty different events for the Friends.

Daniel and Nate, twins, were born prematurely in 2002. They each weighed 1½ pounds at birth. The boys had many challenges associated with their premature birth including 16 surgeries for Daniel. As soon as the boys learned to walk, they began to spend many hours at the Somers Library reading and taking advantage of the children's programs. The boys' dad, Ron Schwartz, says that, "When the boys saw the request for volunteers at the library, they wanted to give back for all of the good times that they had spent at the library." Daniel, Nate and Ron set up all of the chairs and some of the props for each of the concerts, plays, and readings that the Friends of the Somers Library sponsors. They also clean up again after each performance. Nate and Daniel say that, "The best part of the work is the gratitude of the performers and the public who come to see the performances."

In addition to Daniel and Nate's volunteer work at the library, they are high honor roll students at Somers High School. They also umpire for Somers Youth Sports Organization, participate in the SHS Academic Challenge, volunteer with Let's Play it Forward and they are both brown belts in Kempo Karate. Daniel also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and Nate volunteers for community service as a tutor for the National Honor Society program at SHS.

Ron Schwartz says that, "The boys have learned valuable lessons doing this volunteer work. They have seen firsthand how their work enriches the lives of the people who depend upon them for these productions. They learn responsibility and how to be on time at the library no matter what else is going on in their lives. They learn and maintain a work ethic that will help them later in life."

Susan Berkow, president of the Friends of the Somers Library, says that 'amongst the many friends of the library, these boys stand out. Especially in this season of giving, it's important to recognize and thank our loyal supporters. "
