Do you have a suggested Cowboy?
COWBOYS OF THE STOCKYARDS
The Stockyards has seen its share of cowboys and cowgirls in its 150-year history. They've faced grit and grind of the cattle industry, felt the hardness of horns and dirt in the arena. They've made cattle trades, built buildings that stand the test of time and even survived a few brawls in the process. The spirit of the Cowboy continues in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. And with that we bring you one of today's Cowboys of the Stockyards.

How are you connected to stockyards?

I  represent a Drover (one who drives cattle up the trail in the 1800's) for the Fort Worth Herd.  The Fort Worth Herd has being driving Longhorn Cattle down the streets of E. Exchange  twice a day at 11:30am & 4:00pm since 1999, and I proudly joined the Fort Worth Herd Team in year 2000.

What is your favorite thing about the stockyards?

Being a part of our western heritage offering an unforgettable glimpse into our past by driving our unique Longhorn Cattle for our visitors to experience a little of the old west and genuine cowhands. Also educating school groups about the cowboy culture, handling horses and longhorn cattle in the Stockyards.

Tell about a great exchange ave memory you have?

Late one evening I was involved in the biggest Longhorn stampede cattle run in the Stockyards history! Yes a stampede of longhorns and horses running full- blast on a motocross track with motorcycles chasing us... or we could have been chasing them! Oh yes there were 25ft tall dirt jumps involved too, and the cattle loved them! This was a staged event with Fort Worth Herd Red Bull X-Fighters Motocross Teams, the first time ever to be held in the United States, safe, secure and an authentic built track right here in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Our Longhorn stampede was the opening of their motocross race.  What an adrenaline-rush for the most exciting event ever!

HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
Courtesy of the North Fort Worth Historical Society
After Armour and Swift opened their plants in 1903, the cattlemen of Texas began trusting the financial status of the Fort Worth Market. By 1904, Fort Worth was the nation's fifth largest livestock market. It was the largest market south of Kansas City and the largest in the entire Southwest during that half-century.
The packing plants brought jobs to the north side which brought residents to the area. Newcomers from all over the nation and even the world came to Fort Worth and found employment in the Stockyards and usually settled nearby. Those who were employed by the Stockyards, Swift and Armour increased the population from 500 to 5,000. Not only did the plants offer good jobs with benefits but they had perks such as baseball teams, company picnics, choirs, beauty pageants, and bands. Because most of the workers lived near the plants a real sense of community developed in the North Side.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition  of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.

Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.

Sincerely,
