Early Childhood Department

The Children of Ganon Aleph Become Authors

Over the past several weeks the children in Ganon Aleph have been learning about how authors create their stories. Some simple stories may just be for fun and have nonsense rhyming words such as Dr. Seuss's A Wocket in My Pocket. As stories become more mature they tell of an adventure or a lesson to be learned with a clear beginning, middle and an end. Some stories we have enjoyed that follow this format are The Mitten by Alvin Tresselt, Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson and a Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.

In class the children were challenged to write and illustrate their own stories based on the picture they saw on the cover of a book jacket. The stories they wrote are all original, funny and most importantly, follow the formats we have learned in class.

Who knows, maybe we have the next Eric Carle or Robert Munsch in our class!

Lower School

Megillah Character Study in Second Grade

After learning the Megillah story in detail, 2B students focused on how the characters of the Megillah were feeling throughout the story. They learned different feelings in Hebrew and each student wrote a paragraph in Hebrew about a character from the Megillah highlighting how they felt.

Animal Research in Grade 2

Second grade classes have been busy reading a variety of interesting books about different animal species, as they focused on nonfiction text features. The students used the table of contents, photo captions, headings, a glossary and an index. They then highlighted many fascinating facts regarding the importance of animals' habitats, food, life cycles, and character traits, which assure their successful survival in the wilderness. In addition, everyone read about the conscientious effort that is being made by people around the world in order to prevent more of our wildlife from becoming endangered.

The students are presently researching an animal of their choice by using PebbleGo, a database that is designed for young children. Each student created a Google doc and then used Google Drawing to search for and insert an image of their animal. The next step will be to annotate the image with the information they have gathered. Spring is almost here...a Sunday outing to the zoo may be on our second graders' wish lists!

Fifth Graders Investigate the Age of Exploration

As fifth graders investigate the Age of Exploration, the students have been discussing the challenges of being an explorer. Besides scary tales of sea monsters and a flat world, the explorers were further hindered by limited navigational tools. Students gained a deeper appreciation for the explorers through building and testing model sextants, a tool that the explorers used to calculate latitude.

Middle School

Eighth Grade Yachad Shabbaton

This past Shabbat, a group of 8th graders joined with Yachad members at the Ahavat Achim shul in Fair Lawn for an uplifting Shabbaton. Yavneh 8th graders impressed everyone there with their participation, respect, and all-around awesomeness! Whether leading the davening or leining, giving a D'var Torah, cheering and singing, the Yachad members were delighted with the attention and care that our students showed them. After Shabbat, they joined together again for a melava malka with dancing and pizza!

Sister-2-Sister Bat Mitzvah Celebration

Our 6th Grade Sister-2-Sister Bat Mitzvah celebration took place on March 10th. Our 6th grade girls, accompanied by their mothers, grandmothers and aunts, participated in a full morning of chesed and fun. Friendship bracelets were made for our "Sister" organization, House of Hope, Bayit V' Tikveh , mishloach manot packaged for a local Sister-to-Sister chapter in Passaic and brunch was served. The highlights of the morning included Skyping with House of Hope, singing for one another, performing a dance which was choreographed by our students, and hearing how Margo Weinberger celebrated her Bat Mitzvah with the girls of House of Hope. Yavneh Academy Science Fair

Where can you get a smoothie, eggs, or a manicure?

At the Yavneh Academy Science Fair of course!

As Seen on TV was the theme of Yavneh Academy's 6th grade Science Fair. The 6th grade students tested products including ice cream makers, hair straighteners, microwave cleaners, several types of insulated water bottles, and so much more to determine the reality behind the advertising claims. Applying their knowledge of the scientific process, children chose a product, created a hypothesis, and tested the validity of the product's claim. Their findings were shared on a poster board accompanied with on-site presentations and explanations. The project will conclude with letters written to the manufacturers sharing the strengths and weaknesses of the tested product. As one parent shared, "The children's presentations were great. Who knew I would learn which nail polish to buy for the perfect manicure, or about a blender that can make a delicious smoothie, or that ice cream could be made while playing ball!

CHESED DRIVES

Yavneh Academy is currently running two important chesed collection drives through Tuesday, March 26.

We are collecting items for the Mega Food Drive of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey

Most needed items:

Adult briefs, baby food, beans, canned fish and meat, canned fruit and vegetables, cereal, chili, diapers, formula, jams, jelly, mac and cheese, meaty soups, paper towels, pasta, peanut butter, potatoes, rice, shelf-stable milk, stews, tissues, toilet paper.

Things to keep in mind:

No glass or soda

No expired food

Accepting Passover food

We are collecting socks for KNOCK KNOCK, GIVE A SOCK

Knock Knock, Give a Â Sock is an organization that collects the most needed, but least donated article of clothing for those experiencing homelessness: socks. While many people donate clothing, 9 out of every 10 people who have donated clothing have never donated a pair of socks. On top of that, most organizations do not accept gently used socks, but at KKGS - we do! Click HERE to read more about KKGS.

Socks donated for children must be new.

Socks donated for adults should be new or lightly used in good condition.

Collection bins are located outside of the cafeteria.

Please bring food and socks to donate when you come to school for

Parent-Teacher conferences (3/17) or the YPAA Purim Chagigah (3/21)!

ADAR DRESS UP GUIDELINES

Please note:

1. Regular Yavneh Academy dress code applies on Adar dress up days, except on Yom Yavneh when T-shirts may be worn in Lower School only.

2. Face paint cannot be worn on Adar dress-up days (except Shushan Purim).

Yavneh Academy Shushan Purim Costume Guidelines:

1. Girls (grades 5 and below) may wear pants only if it is an integral part of the costume.

2. While pants are permitted in Lower School if they are an inherent part of the costume, blouses must have appropriate sleeves and necklines.

3. Please send a skirt to be worn for Tefillah and while learning Torah.

4. Toy guns and other weapons should not be brought to school as part of any costume.

5. Baseball bats, hockey sticks and other sports equipment may not be brought to school.

Development Corner

We are so excited to see the Yavneh community join together at the 14th Annual Benjamin Schwartz Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the Garden State Plaza. Proceeds of the run support Yavneh's Annual Campaign, raising critical dollars that support enhancements to our educational curriculum, scholarship assistance for families in need, exceptional programming, faculty of the highest caliber and so much more.

We can't wait to cheer on all of our parents, students, and friends, from novices to seasoned runners, who will be running for Yavneh!
