The Geshem Fund

It has been very busy for the Geshem Fund. Significant sums of money have been distributed to dozens of people to help with rent, utilities, food and many other purposes. This has depleted the fund. Please help us help those in need.

Please open your hearts and your wallets and make checks out to the order of GESHEM FUND and give to Rabbi Raccah or put in the mailbox of the office or the shul and Ayelet will give it to Rabbi Raccah.  As you thank Hashem for all that He has blessed you with, remember the less fortunate who are struggling and in desperate need of assistance. Thank you.

Sponsor Learning in the Kollel

Our Rabbis tell us of the great power and merit associated with supporting Torah learning. To that end, consider sponsoring a night, a week or a month of learning in the Kollel. Examples of sponsorship purposes include: in memory of a deceased loved one for their Azkarah, to merit a Rifuah Shilamah, or to honor a loved one or friend. In addition to the great merit of supporting Torah in our community, your sponsorship will be marked with printed pages noting the intent of your support that are placed in stands on the tables in the Beit HaMidrash for the duration of your sponsorship period.

Here are the costs for the various sponsorships:

A night of learning -  $52
A week of learning -  $100
A month of learning - $400

The Kollel appreciates the following sponsors of learning:

A week of learning has been sponsored for April 16-23 by Julien Partouche in memory of his father, Nissim ben Avraham and Gamara Levana. May his Neshama merit an Aliyah.

A week of learning has been sponsored for April 22-29 in memory of Sultana bat Esther. May her Neshama merit an Aliyah.

A month of learning has been sponsored anonymously for the month of April. The Kollel thanks the patrons for their generosity.

Halacha of the Week

Giving Thanks to Hashem

Today is  Yom Ha'atzmaut,  Israeli Independence Day. We have already discussed the proper outlook regarding the establishment of the modern State of Israel in the Land of Israel according to the teachings of Maran Rabbeinu Ovadia Yosef  zt"l  several times.

We find something quite interesting in the work of Rabbeinu Yosef Haim zt"l in his Sefer Benayahu (on Rosh Hashanah 8b) where he writes something closely resembling a prophecy, that before the Ultimate Redemption, many Jews will immigrate to the Land of Israel, a government will be established there, and they will be held in high esteem, however, they shall not be fully redeemed until the arrival of Mashiach. These words were written by Rabbeinu Yosef Haim at a time when no one ever believed that there would be such a gathering of the exiles in the Land of Israel without the aid of our righteous Mashiach.

Certainly, the kindness Hashem has granted us through this tremendous influx of Jews returning to the Land of Israel in the past few generations is not in vain as Maran zt"l said in a speech on Yom Ha'atzmaut of 5729 (1969) that Hashem has helped us vanquish our enemies in the War of Independence (1948), Operation Kadesh (Sinai War, 1956), the Six Day War (1967) among others and Hashem does not perform miracles for no reason. Rather, the reason is because He wished to bring about both a spiritual and physical salvation upon the Jewish nation in the Land of Israel in order to hasten the Ultimate Redemption, may we merit seeing it speedily and in our days.
Our Sages teach us that if one is a recipient of a miracle and one recites a song of thanksgiving to Hashem, Hashem shall perform another miracle for him. Maran zt"l explains that this is what is meant by the verse, "Behold, G-d is my salvation, I shall trust and not fear, for Hashem is my strength and song and He has become my salvation" that Hashem has brought about a salvation for me and therefore, I will not fear in the future, for since I have sung to him, he shall perform many more miracles for me.

Our Sages took issue with King Chizkiyahu for not having recited song and praise to Hashem when Hashem performed a tremendous miracle by killing the entire mammoth army of Sanheriv, although Chizkiyahu was a righteous king who was worthy of being the Mashiach and increased Torah study tremendously throughout the Jewish nation. In spite of all of King Chizkiyahu's Torah, the Heavenly attribute of judgment prosecuted him for not uttering songs of praise to Hashem.

We must therefore offer much song, praise, and thanksgiving to Hashem for all of the miracles he performed for us and for saving us from all our enemies and not to mistakenly think that "My strength and the might of my hand has caused me this victory" and only trust in a human army as though we were saved through our mortal might. On the contrary, offering thanks to Hashem will give us strength to triumph over our enemies in the future as well. As a result, we shall merit experiencing Hashem's miracles in the future as well, as we have written above that one who praises Hashem for a miracle shall merit more miracles. Similarly, King David realized that when Hashem performed a miracle for him and allowed him to defeat the lion and bear that he was destined to save the entire Jewish nation, for Hashem would not perform such a wondrous miracle for naught and he understood that this meant that Hashem would perform even greater miracles for the Jewish nation through him.

Project Shalom Bayis

The 23rd  Annual Event of Project Shalom Bayis is scheduled for April 29, 2018 7:30 pm at Shaarei Tzedek Mishkan Yair, 2832 West Touhy Avenue, Chicago. This event will feature the inspirational and much sought-after speaker, Rabbi Paysach Krohn. He will speak on the topic: To Enrich, Enhance, and Enjoy: Dealing with the Challenges of Marriage Today.
The event coordinators are Moshe and Chevie Davis, Yehoshua and Elana Davis, Yonatan and Elke Glenner and Ari and Shoshana Shabat.

Project Shalom Bayis was founded by the Daughters of Israel in 1984. Its purpose is to make qualified therapy available to couples through referrals and/or financial assistance if needed. This is done in an anonymous, confidential manner, with the support of our community Rabbis and with the generous assistance of our community's mental health professionals. To date, Project Shalom Bayis has serviced close to 510 couples in the Chicago community and it grows annually in its requests for services. This is in great part due to the realization that the stigma associated with seeking professional therapeutic help is lessening. The importance of not waiting until a crisis has occurred in a marriage is finally becoming accepted. The Project Shalom Bayis Annual Buffet has become the only fund-raiser for this vital therapeutic service to the Chicago Orthodox Jewish community. Please help us in our quest for marital harmony in our community. Donations can be made to: Project Shalom Bayis, c/o Siegal, 2724 West Greenleaf, Chicago, IL 60645.
