Whitman Fire Department Encourages Residents to Test Smoke and CO Alarms During Daylight Saving

Chief Timothy J. Grenno and the Whitman Fire Department wish to remind residents to test their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors this weekend as daylight saving time approaches.
Daylight saving time begins Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m.

"Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives, and we rely on them to alert us to fire, smoke and carbon monoxide," Chief Grenno said. "It's crucial that they are working properly and we encourage residents and businesses to take daylight saving time as a regular reminder to test their devices replace any batteries that have run out." According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), having working smoke alarms reduces the risk of dying in a fire by 50 percent and, on average, three out of every five fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
The Whitman Fire Department asks that all business owners not only change the batteries in their clocks, smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, but also replace the batteries on wall mounted emergency lights and exit signs. All businesses should have emergency backup lighting as a safety feature to provide temporary lighting in case of power failure.
In order to continue to keep your home safe and prevent fires, Chief Grenno recommends that residents follow safety tips outlined by NFPA: *T est smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at least once a month using the test button. *Replace alarms immediately if they don’t respond properly when tested. * Replace batteries in smoke and CO alarms when you change your clocks. Historical Tidbit:
The Old Colony Railroad was the first railroad in Whitman, built in 1865.

Old Colony Railroad was taken over by Penn Central a New York railroad company.

A short railroad was established in 1865. It extended 200 yards and went from Dunbar Hobart & Whidden Tack to the Old Colony Line.

The Whitman Railroad company was established in October 30, 1892. It was an extension to the East Side Railway, which passed through Crescent Street, Brockton, and Temple and West Street, Whitman to Washington Street where it terminated.

In 1892 the Whitman Railroad company was established. It connected to the East Side Railway, from Crescent Street, Brockton, and Temple and West Streets, Whitman to Washington, where it ended.

In 1893, the Rockland-Abington line opens. It connects north through Union to North Avenue, east though North Avenue ti Haywards corner, south through Bedford and Washington St to Abington Center, from Abington to the Whitman Street Railway.

New line built from New Haven Railroad station to Elmwood that travels onto Whitman, Plymouth, and Central Street to Plymouth Central Street. Then it travels onto East Bridgewater Center.

The Brockton & Plymouth Street Railway was charted in 1899. It was meant to extend from Whitman to Hanson and Bryantville. It would connect the Pembroke Street railway to the Plymouth and Kingston Street railway.

Reflection:

“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.”
~ Gautama Buddha

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest. "
~ Confucius

"Or how can you say to your friend, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? ~ Jesus

Reflection is an integral part of initiating positive change in our life. I am thankful that I practice a religious tradition that values and teaches reflection, and sets aside specific times each year to remind me to step up my spiritual practice.

Whether you have a spiritual practice or not, I would encourage taking the time for reflection. Start with a meditation, slow down the pace of life, lesson your sensory input (turn off electronics except soothing music), maybe take a walk in nature, empty your mind. Then engage in some form of creative work: this can include but is not limited to journaling or any kind of art. There is no right or wrong way to do this part.
You just need to be you!
This is just for you… don’t need to share. Judgement free zone.
I have books and books of journal ramblings. The sheer volume made me realize it was interpersonal relationships and group dynamics I struggle with, and journaling helped me figure them out; but I also came to understand I love humanity so much the work is worth it to experience the wide variety of gifts and talents we bring to this world.
Who knows what wonderful things you are going to find out about yourself?
