Lamorinda School Bus Program

Dear Parents:

As you may know from the LSBTA 2018 Parent Survey that was distributed last December, the Lamorinda School Bus Program is faced with significant financial challenges next year. These issues will be discussed at several upcoming meetings and parents are encouraged to participate by attending or by emailing comments.

Background

A competitive bid process last fall revealed that the Bay Area's high cost of labor combined with the ever-increasing demand for drivers (public transit, school buses, private businesses and tech companies) will result in significant increases in the cost of school bus transportation.  The LSBTA has been largely insulalted from these market forces due to previously low, locked-in rates under the current contract.  However, the LSBTA is now facing a 41% cost of services increase over the next five years.

Current parent fees provide only 30% of the annual operating revenue for the school bus program.  Measure J, a 1/2 percent sales tax in Contra Costa County, provides the remaining 70%.  However, Measure J funds are projected to flatten out over the next two years.  The LSBTA must increase parent fees AND reduce the number of buses it runs in order to survive financially.

Proposed Route Changes

The LSBTA must increase parent fees and reduce the number of buses next year as each bus will cost $99,402/yr. in 2019-20 and $110,337/yr. in 2020-2021.

The LSBTA's goal is to provide as much bus service as possible while also reducing costs.  The following is proposed:
As proposed, these changes would eliminate Miramonte 2 and Miramonte 16.  The new Miramonte 17 would include a stop at Wells Fargo Bank and Glorietta @ Casa Vieja.

Details of the route changes can by found in the agenda and meeting materials for the March 5, 2019 LSBTA meeting.
