House of Prayer
is a gathering of God's people who value:
Welcoming,
Openness,
Compassionate Community,
and Relationships

Here is an update of what is happening at
House of Prayer this week!
Worship This Sunday
So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all." Mark 10:42-44

What is the relationship between love and power? Our world often seems to set love and power as opposites. But Jesus teaches us power in and of itself is not a bad thing if it is used to serve others. This is our calling and invitation: to use our privilege and power to serve others rather than build ourselves up. Like many of Jesus' teachings, this is clear but difficult. Join us Sunday as we dig into this important moral guidance.
Children & Youth This Week
The Sunday School children complete their unit learning about Moses leading the Israelites across the Red Sea. Next week the youth have a learning night with their peer groups on the following topics: 5th/6th grade - Jesus & Authority, Confirmation - Healing the Bent-over Woman, High School - Why does a good God let bad things happen?
Simple Supper Menu
Menu for October 24th: Hot hoagies, potato salad, tater tots, veggies and dip, plus cookies! Join us for dinner at 5:30pm in Fellowship Hall!
Trunk or Treat Wed
Neighbors Welcome!
This year our Trunk or Treat event will happen on Wednesday, October 24th from 5:30-6:30pm so mark your calendars! This is our annual chance for children to go trick or treating in our parking lot and show off their costumes! If you'd like to share candy with the trick or treaters from your car (decorations encouraged), please sign up on the attendance card. That evening someone will direct you where to park so all trunks are facing the same area. Neighbors and friends are encouraged to come too, this event is open to everyone! Any questions can also go to Ben Whalen ( bwhalen@hoplc.org or 612-500-9523).
Helping Our Literal Neighbors
Volunteers Needed Oct 28
We have another opportunity to help Aeon, the housing nonprofit who recently bought the Season's Park Apartment buildings to the south of church. They continue to catch up on a LOT of deferred maintenance that previous owners ignored. They'd like our help painting the interior common areas in one of their buildings on Sunday, October 28th from noon-3pm. We'll eat lunch together after the 11:00 service is done and then head over to paint! If you'd like to join us, please sign up with Ben Whalen ( bwhalen@hoplc.org or 612-500-9523). Please also contact Ben if you want to support this cause financially but missed the special offering opportunity. Thank you!

Lutheran Social Service Group Homes
House of Prayer is sponsoring two Lutheran Social Service group homes for people with disabilities in our neighborhood; Mi Casa at 70th and 12th Ave, and My House at 76th and Park. Rev. Kathryn Tiede from LSS and Emily, the director of the group homes will be here on Sun. Oct 28th to talk about how we can engage with these homes doing things such as sending cards, visiting, playing games, watching sports, driving to church or events, having a party, yard work, etc. We are collecting money to help with expenses at the homes. A table will be in the Narthex for you to get more information, and to volunteer. What a great opportunity for HOP members to reach out to our neighbors!

HOP volunteers painted the living room at Mi Casa the HOP sponsored group home.
Sheridan Story Update
Thanks so much to all supporting The Sheridan Story to provide food for kids at Centennial Elementary! We have lots of volunteers this year and have raised enough money so far to provide weekend food packs for the school year to 12 students. Donations are still coming in; our goal is 15 students. Can you help us get there? Cost is $215 per student for the full year but every little bit counts. To donate, visit www.hoplc.org/give and designate "Sheridan Story" where it says "Select fund" OR include a check with your normal offering and write "Sheridan Story" in the memo line. Thank you!

Do you Appreciate History?
You may want to consider helping with the Confirmation Class History Project. We have a small group attempting to identify faces of confirmands in all class photos throughout the history of HOP. Eventually our long range Big Audacious Goal (BAG) would be to contact all that are still living. If you care to help contact Mike Murphy ( mikeandpam3001@hotmail.com) or Darlene Clauson ( dclauson@usfamily.com)

Can you identify the location and circled person in this circa 1953 photo? Hint: She went on to be a member of the 1959 Confirmation Class. Answer provided later in this publication..
