Mary Collins President,
LWV SJ/SC
|
Happy Holidays! As we enter this season of holidays, I wish you, your family and friends a peaceful and joyous time together. We can also celebrate another successful election season--Making Democracy Work is a group effort. So again, thanks to all of you for empowering voters and defending democracy.
You have already received a letter requesting additional financial support for our League. Thank you if you have already sent a donation; if you haven't yet, consider an end of the year gift if you can do so.
Looking ahead to the New Year, I want to alert you to a number of important events so that you can put them on your calendar. Our League Program Planning meeting to set goals for the next year will be Saturday, January 26. Helen Hutchison, President of League of Women Voters CA, is holding an Advocacy training January 12, and on January 24 will host a presentation of the League of Women Voters Transformational Journey discussing the actions the League is taking to meet the challenges of the next 100 years.
On January 17, we are registering new citizens at the Naturalization Ceremony in Campbell. Also, while not yet taking a position on the Women's March, January 19, we will again be registering voters. Bay Area League Day, February 9, will deal with the topics of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Watch for more detailed information on times, places, and registration information.
We will also begin to organize for Legislative interviews of our state legislators. This enables us to meet with legislators and discuss the important issues the League would like them to address. This is a group meeting and may be great for newer members to begin to be involved.
Again, I want to thank you for your membership and support of our League of Women Voters of San Jose/Santa Clara and wish you a wonder-filled holiday season.

This past year saw the most destructive wildfires in California history with devastating consequences for entire communities. The County of Santa Clara's Office of Emergency Services deployed teams to assist with operations, planning, logistics, and public information to support local response, re-entry and repopulation efforts.
Patty Eaton, who was deployed to Sonoma and Santa Barbara Counties and most recently Butte County for the Camp Fire, will discuss lessons learned from these deployments that can be applied to the Santa Clara County operational area, particularly in the area of emergency preparedness.

Voter Service - Opportunities to Register Voters & Election Resources
By Cheryl Fuelleman, Voter Service Chair
|
Record numbers of voters turned out for the mid-term elections. Thank you again to everyone who helped register, educate, and work on election night.
With the mid-term elections behind us, it's interesting to look at some statistics and analyses. One interesting site that has several articles on the subject is
http://www.pewresearch.org/topics/voter-participation/. There are several links to interesting articles such as how votes were cast...divisions by race, gender, education, how religious groups vote, and why some people find it difficult to vote.
Our work continues into 2019 - I need VOLUNTEERS to register newly sworn in citizens after the Naturalization Ceremonies on January 17, 2019 (
NOTE: YOU CAN REGISTER AND ALSO ATTEND LUNCH WITH LEAGUE THE SAME DAY - NO PROBLEM.)
There are 3 sessions - please sign up for one or any of the sessions by sending me an email at [email protected]:
(1) arriving by 9:15
(2) arriving by 11 (if you are not going to LwL), or
(3) arriving by 1:15
We're Registering Voters at the Women's March in downtown San Jose on Saturday, January 19. Please contact me for time and location of booth.
Check out the League's members only website at http://www.lwvsjsc.org/members-only and click on Voter Service for links to several resources, many editable for your further use, such as "Why Should I Vote" Presentations, flyers, Pros and Cons rules and information, and Candidate Forums scripts and procedures! DON'T MISS YOUR ANNUAL OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE!
Program Planning Meeting
Recommendations for Issues for Emphasis
Saturday, January 26, 2019
Home of Alice Thorn
1711 Harte Drive
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Alice Thorn is generously opening her home again this year for our annual program planning meeting-the process by which we decide where and how we will focus our time, talent, money and reputation. We ask where will the League have the most impact and what will help build our organization. For those of you new to League, your opinion (vote) matters as much as those that have been members for decades. Our task is to recommend "Issues for Emphasis" for 2019-2021 LWV California. We are allowed to list up to three choices. Expect at least two proposals to adopt a new position via concurrence.
Program Planning is the first step in preparation for our LWV California Convention. The process culminates in the delegates' adoption of the statewide program at our May 31-June 2 convention in Pasadena. (We alternate years between State and national.) Don't miss your opportunity to let the state board know where you would like to see efforts focused. Should there be more advocacy? Is there an area where we need a new study or an old one that should be updated or eliminated? Is community education needed around an issue/s? For example, was there an item on your ballot where you wondered why League did not take a stand? Local results are compiled and become part of the State Convention's packet.
We will open our discussion by considering some positions and how we have used them. While we no longer review positions individually, you may comment on any local, regional, state or national position. Importantly, we also select where we want to focus our San Jose/Santa Clara local's energy by selecting our top three priorities. Last year they were: Climate Change, Affordable Housing, and Make it Fair. What advocacy or education did we do for each one? What opportunities did we miss? Do we want to keep the same priorities or change to new ones? See our website for links to all positions at

League Transformation
P

Helen Hutchison

What will the League look like in its next century? What can we do now to assure the continued relevance and visibility of the League of Women Voters? Helen Hutchison, LWVC President, will discuss the actions the League is taking, nationally and statewide, to meet the challenges of the future.
Over the past two years, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the League's founding, national and state leaders have engaged in a process of self-reflection, environmental scanning, hard discussions, and tough decisions related to the continued relevance and health of the League network. LWVUS has published a "
Transformation Roadmap" that includes specific action steps to be implemented. It is a synthesis of many threads of work, including input from Leagues across the country, interviews with internal and external stakeholders, review of the larger nonprofit environment and the professional expertise of consulting firms.
On January 24th Helen Hutchison, LWVC President, will discuss the actions the League is taking, nationally and statewide, to meet the challenges of the future: What will the League look like in its next century? What can we do now to assure the continued relevance and visibility of the League of Women Voters?
All area Leagues are invited to join us at Cupertino Quinlan Center, 10185 N Stelling Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014 on Jan. 24, 2019, 7 to 9pm.

4 Key Elements of HR1 - Strengthening Voting Rights
By Celine Stewart, LWVUS
|
The upcoming 116th Congress could make history with the first comprehensive package of democracy reforms scheduled for 2019, HR1. Since the announcement of HR1, LWVUS has been talking to folks on the Hill and working with partner organizations to help shape the bill's language and ensure that voting rights are strengthened by this important legislation.
The League of Women Voters is very excited at the prospect of HR1 because it aims to include elements that align with many of the League's long-held positions, like election modernization and redistricting reform. As we work with legislators to craft HR1, LWV is advocating for the prioritization of the following essential elements of the bill:
1. EXPAND VOTER REGISTRATION
2. IMPLEMENT FAIR REDISTRICTING
