Dear HUSD Community,

While we are constantly reading about negative news in our communities and across the country, there are always positive stories waiting to be told. I’m excited to share in this month’s newsletter that our community has experienced individual and collective achievements worth recognizing. The Class of 2019 Puente Scholars were announced and three of the 25 students selected from across the state are from the Hayward Unified School District (HUSD). These students represent our three traditional high schools and were selected from a pool of 171 applicants for their outstanding academic achievement and for demonstrating community leadership.

We also celebrate Joseph Franco from Mt. Eden High for making it into the top three at a national competition for young entrepreneurs. Joseph participates in the NFTE entrepreneurship pathway , one of many career pathways offered by HUSD to better prepare students for college and careers after graduation. At a recent event, I had the opportunity to hear about the incredible impact another career pathway program has had on one of our Tennyson High School students. Lidia Lara represented HUSD at a Regional Occupational Program event highlighting business partners. Lidia is a great ambassador for the Biomedical Pathway as she spoke enthusiastically about her internship with the Eden Center and the role this experience has played in preparing her for a career in neurology.

During the month of October.... Read more
