During this winter season, I have been reflecting on how housing for everyone is a basic need and a fundamental right. NHSNB has been building affordable housing and revitalizing and stabilizing neighborhoods since 1978. We strive to ensure that people with lower incomes have access to excellent quality, affordable housing. And through our efforts, we seek to ensure that everyone has a roof over their head and to be warm and safe. With an eye on achieving our mission and goals, we manage 28 units of affordable housing and continue to trend upward with the acquisition of more properties.
2018 has been a very busy year for us. Some of the highlights include:
- Acquiring and renovating 2 single family homes in Greenwood Commons in New Britain;
- Rescuing 9 units from foreclosure in a New Britain cooperative;
- Working with our partners at Greater Bristol Realty Corporation to build 5 units of affordable housing in Bristol;
- Leading a group of NRZ leaders to Houston in October to participate in leadership training and networking with peers from across the nation;
- Providing educational training (financial fitness, first time home buyers, and landlord classes) and financial counseling to more than 800 people in the past 11 months of 2018.

NHSNB Leads New Britain Team to Houston CLI

Resident Leaders from North Oak and Arch Area NRZs Attend NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute
Resident Leaders from two of New Britain's Neighborhood Revitalization Zones (NRZs) traveled to Houston, Texas, in October to attend the NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute (CLI).
Elaine Lechowicz and Erin Marceno of Arch Area NRZ and Marie Bachand, Pablo Rodriguez, Yvette Ghannam, and Manny Sandoval of North Oak NRZ took part in resident leadership training and networking with peers from across the country at the CLI. Also, CB&E Director Daria Keyes and VISTA Volunteer Enidza Torres attended.
NRZ leaders brought back a wealth of knowledge to share with their community groups. CLI attendance made NHSNB eligible to apply for a $4,000 Action Plan grant on behalf of the NRZs. The NRZ leaders chose to focus their grant on engagement and recruitment of adults and youth into their NRZs to have a more resident-driven approach and to increase collective action.

Homes for Our Neighbors: NHSNB Celebrates 40 Years
NHSNB invites you to join us for our 40th anniversary celebration on Thursday, April 4th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Trinity-on-Main, 69 Main Street, New Britain.
There will be food (hors d'oeuvres), drinks, live jazz, awards, door prizes, a short video, and a photo display of key moments. Learn about our new work in New Britain and Bristol. Tickets are $40 per person; $75 per couple. All are welcome. Space is limited. NHSNB is Developing Housing in Bristol and New Britain!
NHSNB, Inc., has embarked on an ambitious real estate development program for 2019. NHSNB is partnering with Greater Bristol Realty Corporation (GBRC), a not-for-profit land development firm, to build three (3) single-family homes in Bristol at Evergreen and Pine off of Route 72 and a duplex at 63 Gridley St. We hope to start the project in April/May 2019 with completion slated for early 2020.
In addition, NHSNB will sell two (2) single-family homes in the Greenwood Commons area in New Britain; 35 Halsey St.will be on the market in January 2019, followed by 5 Green St. in early Spring. Each home will be sold for approximately $120,000 to eligible, qualified buyers.
Also, NHSNB has rescued SilverCrest Co-op from bank foreclosure. This is a 9-unit co-op on Silver St. in New Britain. NHSNB plans to invest $150,000 in upgrades, including a new roof and various items in each unit.
NHSNB continues to look at potential real estate development projects in both the North Oak and Arch Area NRZs.
