Weekly News For
Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church
October 21, 2018

Happy Anniversary PPPC!

On October 22, 1882 a committee from Presbytery came to the home of the Rev. Dr.  Charles E Knox in Point Pleasant and received ten letters of profession of faith from various families.  Rev. A.H. Dashiel of Brickburg Church (now Lakewood) read the Confession and Covenant to which these persons gave their consent.  Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church was then declared regularly constituted with these ten members and placed under the Presbytery of Monmouth.

This Sunday, October 21 we will celebrate our 136th Church Anniversary.  An all church brunch will be held in Wilton Hall,  with birthday cake even!  During this time a presentation on New Beginnings mission study will be shown.  Please come and celebrate God's ongoing faithfulness to our church.

Thank you card

Dear Church Family:

Juli and I are so grateful for all the kind wishes and warm greetings that were so eloquently expressed last Sunday. Your beautiful and thoughtful cards, unexpected gifts, and affirming words left us speechless (which is hard to admit for a preacher). You have outdone yourselves in welcoming us and we are looking forward to how, working together, this wonderful congregation can embrace the bright future that God has prepared for you.

Peace!

Pastor Osy

Session Highlights
From the October 16th Meeting

Session reviewed membership lists and will reach out to those members we have Session Highlights missed seeing in church during the past year. We hope they will soon join us again for worship and fellowship.

A motion was made and seconded to move to the Inactive Roll: Keith Drugas, Chris Garner, Janice Davis, and Dylan & Gerard Jalowski. The motion was approved.

Inquirers Classes for those interested in formally joining our congregation will be scheduled before the end of the year.

A motion was made to have Donna Ferry call different restaurants in the area to see if we could partner with them for fund-raising (as we have done with restaurants in the past). The motion was approved.

A motion was brought by the Personnel Committee to recognize the additional responsibilities undertaken by Sara Hoey during the absence of a choir director. The motion was approved.

A motion was made and seconded for Deb Brendler to exhibit on a bulletin board elders and deacons' photos with committee information to educate all members about the activities everyone can be involved with. The motion was approved.

Lynn Hahm and Jacque Thornton will serve as PPPC Commissioners to Presbytery meetings. Amanda Rauffer will serve as Alternate.

Plans for an audit of church financial records are ongoing, with Jim Conway and Deb Brendler hoping to complete the audit by Thanksgiving.

There will be a bulk pickup of discarded items by Point Pleasant Beach on October 31st. Items should be put out the night before. Call Kim in the office to inform her what type of items you are putting at the curb and she will notify the town.

The Stewardship Committee announced the theme for the 2019 stewardship campaign and will be presented on October 21. Stewardship Sunday when pledges for the coming year will be dedicated is scheduled for November 18th.

Homebound Communion has been and will continue to be served by both Deacons and Elders. The Worship Committee will coordinate with the Board of Deacons to serve as many homebound members as desire to participate.

Police Chief Joseph Michigan and Detective Derek O'Neill conducted a safety review of the Sanctuary, the entrances, exits, offices, and other rooms of the church building on October 8th. They have written their recommendations to make the church safer. These recommendations will be reviewed by the Resource Committee and phased in as time and financing allow.

Sunday School and Contentment

This week we explore a story found in 1 Kings 21:1-19, 27, and discover what happens when King Ahab finds a plot of land he wants more than anything. (Hint: He does not find contentment.)

Next week, we wrap up our study on contentment in Exodus 16:2-21 and 17:1-7 with a look at how God's people respond to the wilderness. God rescued them from slavery in Egypt, yet when they find themselves in uncomfortable situations they complain that God doesn't care about them and even long to return to Egypt. In spite of that, God continued to meet their needs in the wilderness providing what they needed the whole time.

It's easy to find something else we think we need that will make us happy, but contentment is finding the joy in what God has provided right here and now. Let's pray that we all see more clearly the good in our lives rather than complain and miss out!

Some faces of Sunday School...

Thank You for Your Generosity

On October 7th we collected the Peace and Global Witness Offering.  The Peace & Global Witness Offering supports the peacemaking and reconciliation efforts of the church at every governing body level and provides an opportunity to witness God's gift of peace in the world.

Gifts given to the Offering through a congregation are divided in the following manner: 25% is retained by congregations for support of their own peace and reconciliation efforts; 25% retained by mid-councils (12.5% presbytery/12.5% synod) for support of their own peace and reconciliation efforts; and 50% to the Mission Agency to provide assistance and resources for congregations to promote the peace of Christ. This year our congregation increased it giving by collecting $916.  Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church gives 25% of this offering to the Providence House in Whiting, NJ.  The Providence House offers comprehensive services to victims of domestic abuse and their children and promotes peace in all homes.
Hooray and Final News from the Cookbook Team

From a total of 350 cookbooks, our final tally is in. We are pleased to report a profit of $3,773.96 was deposited in the Presbyterian Women's account.

This feat was made possible by the hands of many. We would like to thank all and mention a few: Kim in the office - inspiration and cheerleader, Nancy Cook- gift of writing, Susan Robbins- business acumen, Robin DeRosa - marketing, Marge Watson- treasurer, OCVTS for the students' technical and creative skills, and all of the vendors who were instrumental in our success.

The funds were used in part or whole to purchase a well through the Presbyterian Mission Agency, Chittick Lounge flooring, Anthony Maimone's ministerial robe, Lin's Linens, Fellowship Room attic stairs, computer for the office, Chittick Lounge table pads, donation towards roof, nursery helpers pay, and Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery of Monmouth's mission projects.

See you there!

IHN Sign Ups Again this Month

It was just a couple of weeks ago that we hosted IHN.  We will once again be hosting IHN starting on November 4th.  The hosting schedule had to be moved around due to conflicts with Christmas events at various worship centers.  Our Christmas Toy Distribution conflicted with our original scheduled week, so we are much sooner this time than expected.

Please see the sign up board for November in the Narthex.  Volunteering at any capacity can be very rewarding.  As anyone who previously volunteered with IHN can tell you, the families that are our guests for the week are usually some of the most thankful and grateful people you will come across in your week.   From preparing dinners, to evening and overnight hosts, there is a volunteer position for everyone.

Why not get your kids involved and aware?  Families can sign up for a meal one night as a way of teaching the valuable life lesson of serving others.  Having your kids plan, help shop and prepare a meal for our guests is a great way for the entire family to extend kindness and empathy.

Please call Dorothy Tolley 732-892-9306 if you have any questions.
Gift Auction to Benefit IHN

IHN is having their 2018 Gift Auction at Eagle Ridge on Friday Nov 2 starting at 5:00 p.m. Dee D'Amore and several others from the church will be attending. There is room for a few more at their table. Tickets are $40 each which includes a sit down dinner and 5 gift basket tickets, silent auction and door prizes.  There will be a cash bar. Please speak with Dee D'Amore if you are interested in attending (732-552-9861).

Presbyterian Women Fall Gathering

Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church will be hosting the Monmouth Presbytery PW Fall Gathering on October 27th from 9 to 4 p.m.  Lisa Gray PW Synod Moderator of the Northeast will be the guest speaker speaking on the theme of Knitting the Unity Together.  Attendees are to bring a bag lunch.  Coffee, tea plus other things will be provided.

Service of Remembrance - Sunday November 4th  Service of Remembrance

An important element in the observance of All Saints is the offering prayers of thanksgiving in loving memory of members and friends of our church who have departed this life in the past year. Please call the church office or send us an email with the names of people to be remembered during the Great Thanksgiving.

Lunch at the Rainbow Diner this Monday

Everyone is welcome to stop and have lunch at the Rainbow Diner this Monday beginning at noon.  Every fourth Monday of the Month, members and friends gather for some informal Fellowship.  The Rainbow Diner is on Route 70 in Brick.  Join them this Monday for lunch.

Operation Christmas Child - Shoebox Ministry of Samaritan's Purse

Look for the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Pamplet in the pews.  These red pamphlets contain the instructions and labels on packing a shoebox.

Additional pamphlets can be found in the office and narthex.  Please include $9 for each shoebox to help with shipping costs.  Checks can be made payable to Samaritan's Purse with a note on the memo line that the donation is for Operation Christmas Child.  Place the sealed envelope (found in the Operation Christmas Child pamphlet) on top of the items inside your shoebox so it is clearly visible.

Shoeboxes will be dedicated on November 11th during our Sunday Service.  Please have your box in before then.  Boxes will then be brought to the distribution center so please don't delay in getting your box here by November 11th.

Further instructions on how to pack a box can be found on this  link

We had our MWF visit from the Point Pleasant Beach Fire Department, who came to our morning and afternoon classes. After lessons on fire safety, each of the children were able to explore the fire truck and spray the hose! Everyone went home with a hat and other goodies.

George the Therapy Dog came back for a visit to our T/Th classes. The children were all able to give tummy rubs to George, who was just as happy as they were! Thank you to the Reids for taking time out of their day for our school.   It was an excellent week!

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

Do not fear, for I am with you
Do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you. (Isaiah 41:10)

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is offering immediate aid to the communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. This joins responses already underway for those impacted by Hurricane Florence, Typhoon Mangkhut, and other international disasters that have suffered a lack of media coverage.

Hurricane Michael struck the Florida panhandle with devastating winds and storm surge, causing loss of life. The storm then cut a path across the southeast, moving through the same areas impacted by Hurricane Florence just a few weeks ago.

PDA is deploying teams to affected presbyteries. Emergency aid, assistance in the development of a short-term response plan, as well as a ministry of presence will be the priorities of the initial response.

Meanwhile, areas impacted by Mangkhut and Florence have received aid and support through the gifts of Presbyterians like you. In humility, with God and your continued support, we will continue to help draw hope out of the chaos, together.

Hurricanes Michael and Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut have caused extensive damage and loss of life. Some of you have already given generously in previous weeks. While the needs can feel overwhelming, continued prayer and giving will ensure that the whole church is able to respond. Gifts to DR000194 support our response to hurricanes and typhoons. Gifts can be made  online, by phone at (800) 872-3283, or by check, made out to our church (PDA in the memo line) which we will mailed in.

Jersey Shore Remembers - Paying it Forward With Cleanup Supplies Over the Month of October

Kyle and Frank Jones are collecting items that will be sent down to Hurricane Florence survivors in affected areas in the Carolinas.

Items can also be dropped off in the office at anytime in October.

Here's a list of items that are needed now, mainly cleaning, muck-out supplies:
