" New Year's Burning Bowl Service"
With  Rev. Kevin Lawson
And Worship Associate Char Tarashanti

Ceremonies that involve fire as a cleansing ritual go back to ancient times.
The act of watching something literally go up in flames and be transformed into ash can be very cleansing. Please make plans to join with us for this special service,
as we prepare for and set intentions for the New Year, and to acknowledge
and release any pains and hurts of the closing year. Rev. Kevin and
worship associate Char Tarashanti will lead our service.

~ Happy Holidays from the Board ~

Happy Holidays to all and to all goodwill - towards all in our family, our congregation, our community, our state, nationwide and worldwide.  May it be as simple as being loving and respectful of anyone we meet who is in need.  And get some rest.

~ REI Building Project Update ~

construction_hard_hat.jpg
We are currently waiting for the city to finish reviewing our permit application and
construction drawings for the addition. They should have some comments for us by
mid-January. In the meantime, we hope to have the gas line relocated. Unisource has
come out and marked the new location, which hopefully means they will soon start
digging a trench!
Originally we were also planning to move the APS line that runs across the backyard.
But it turned out to be far enough away from the new foundation so it could be left in
place. We are really cutting it close on the budget, so we are happy to save in any way
we can!

As we bid a fond farewell to our very special Caleb Alexander (officially, Beacon office manager and custodian), I can't resist thanking you publicly, Caleb, for all the ways you have demonstrated your talents, generosity, helpfulness, and flexibility-especially impressive given the other jobs you have also held. For example, you have (1) dug out collaborating organizations' logos and other clever graphics to bring to life our SJA postings to the Weekly E- news, as well as (2) creating links to more in-depth information sources. These are just two (of many) steps you have taken to make the newsletter increasingly attractive and engaging-without being cumbersome and daunting to read. Add to that all the ways you supported SJA as we hosted the public engagement film series last winter/spring...

As I wrote to you last week, I think Coconino County search personal is very smart to have selected you for a position in the housing section, even though I-WE-will miss you mightily!

In community and service,
Roz Clark, SJA Journalist

~ Community Action Committee ~

Sun Sounds of Flagstaff is a not-for-profit organization that provides audio access information to people who cannot read print because of a disability. By making creative use of technology and talent, Sun Sounds ensures that every person with a disability has the opportunity to access the current and local information necessary for a self-directed, productive life. Volunteers read aloud from over 200 current local and national newspapers, even grocery ads. This helps establish that the inability to read print will no longer be a disabling condition.  The Flagstaff affiliate has about 400 listeners.

Congregational members can nominate an organization to be a community partner by picking up a form from the CAC folder at the bottom of the stairs or contact a member of the committee and provide supporting documentation for your nomination. Members of CAC are Joanne Parkes, Sue Strobel, Susan Patrick, Steven Patrick, and Lynda L. Dorweiler.

~ Beacon has a new Fry's rewards number! ~

Fry's grocery store has recently upgraded their system, and as a result our Non-Profit Organization (NPO) has a new account number.   NEW NUMBER IS FE392     Please reference the new number when contacting Fry's for assistance. The previous number will continue to be associated with Beacon, however, it will not be visible when enrolling.

We encourage you to link your Fry's rewards  card to Beacon if you would like. Or you can just use the Beacon phone number as the alt-ID when checking out at the Fry's grocery store. That will also give you access to posted sales prices. Community Rewards is easy to understand and easy to explain! The more we use it, the more we earn!

~ Joys & Concerns ~
As recorded December 16, 2018

Bob P. - Put in a stone of gratitude for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's work on the poem used for the song, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day." He pointed out that the poem is actually a protest of the Civil War. He read two verses of the poem not often heard in the familiar Christmas Holiday Carol.

Dorothy R. - Placed a stone of gratitude for the Flagstaff health care system. She let us know that Roseanne F is recovering well from a partial hip replacement at the new Flagstaff Rehabilitation Hospital up on McMillan Mesa. Roseanne is expected to be discharged to home next Friday Dec 21.

Grace D. - Expressed a joy for her upcoming trip to Seattle, her first vacation since moving to Flagstaff, she will get to meet and visit with her namesake, a new baby cousin. She is filled with joy and looking forward to lot's a baby love and hugs.

Nancy P - Placed stones of gratitude and sadness that our choir directory Adrianne A will be moving from the area, as she and Dave will shortly be relocating to Cedar City, UT. Joy for all the beautiful music Adrianne brought to our community and best wishes for the upcoming move.

Preston C. - Shared gratitude for a gift from his mom of a timeshare opportunity in San Diego, CA, he and Fern will travel over next week for the holiday and have made plans to take the train, splurging for a sleeper compartment for the journey (a real joy).

Roz C. - Shared her thanks for Sue S. and Rev. Kevin and their participation in the Friday evening remembrance of the six-year anniversary of Sandy Hook, CT elementary school shooting. The event was held at the Murdoch Center - It was an inspiring event.
