February Students of the Month
John Schneiderhan
Class of 2019

Senior Jack Schneiderhan is super excited to major in Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology next year. Jack’s favorite classes at North are his math and science classes, mainly because he is geared towards them. His most favorite class by far was Pre-Calculus Honors with Mr. Cierech. Pre-Calc was his favorite because although it was a hard class, Mr. Cierech made sure that every day of class was fun and surprisingly related to random songs he would decide to sing. Jack is a member of Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, German Honor Society, and National Honor Society. He tries to help out in these clubs as much as he can because he loves to help others. This fall, Jack was part of the Girl’s Volleyball Team as a stats guy. He loved every minute of it mainly because of how fun the team was and how fun it was to watch the games. Jack has done many non-NHHS related extracurricular activities over the last four years, but his favorite is his job. He currently works at Basil Bandwagon, a health food store in Clinton. Jack has worked there since August 2016 and does jobs that involve stocking the shelves and being a cashier. The job has taught him many skills, the main one being more sociable with others. Jack has more favorite memories from North than he could possibly count, but here are his top two. The first is from participating in Relay for Life for the first time last year. Jack loves Relay because it is for a great cause and it is a fun night with his friends. The second comes from the cooking class he took last semester. He took the class not expecting much, but ended up absolutely loving it because of his awesome cooking group.
Caitlin Gilvey
Class of 2019

Future Scarlet Knight, Caitlin Gilvey, will be attending Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences next year. Caitlin will major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience. Her goal is to become a Neuropsychologist because many people in her life have been affected by neurological disorders. Her grandmother had ALS, her father has MS, and her friend and she both have post-concussive syndrome. Caitlin’s favorite classes at North are Chemistry with Mrs. Plaxe, American Literature with Mrs. Erwin, and four years of Latin with Mrs. Mullay. These classes are her favorite because they were challenging, engaging, and really struck her interest. They were each dynamic classes with charismatic students and devoted teachers, which made them comfortable and a fun learning environment. Caitlin participated in lacrosse for three years, field hockey for two years, and managed the swim team for two years. She lettered in swimming and lacrosse before she had to stop playing due to concussions. Caitlin is involved in Latin Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, International Thespian Society, and Latin Club. She is also participating in North’s production of Catch Me If You Can.  Outside of North, Caitlin works at Scout’s Coffee Bar and Mercantile and interns at Manhire Opticians over the summer. She participated in latte art competitions and appeared in the article, The Importance of Independent Coffee Shops on the blog New Jersey Isn’t Boring. Caitlin’s favorite memories from North were playing hide and seek in the hallways between school and lacrosse practice with her sister and other teammates. She loved spending time with the other wonderful people in the cast of the musical. What she loves the most about North is wherever you go, whatever you do, you will find phenomenal people and new opportunities.
February Athletes of the Month
Shannon Hesse
Class of 2019

Four-year varsity letter swimmer, Shannon Hesse, has been swimming for eleven years. Shannon is a wonderful asset and her contribution to the team has been immeasurable. She earned the most points of all the senior swimmers this year. During the Hunterdon Warren Sussex County Championship, Shannon swam the 50-yard freestyle in 24.86 seconds. This time is a new North Hunterdon record, which broke her own record from last year. Shannon’s strongest skill is sprinting. She is a sprinter for both individual and relay events. Shannon usually competes in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, the 200 medley relay, and the 400 freestyle relay. Recently, the team tied for first in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championship and won the first round of states. They also qualified to swim at the Meet of Champions coming up in March. Shannon is a member of National Honor Society, History National Honor Society, and Interact Club. Outside of North, she swims for the Hunterdon County Swim Team. Shannon is currently undecided whether she will swim at college, even though she was offered a spot on the TCNJ swim team. She plans to major in Exercise and Health Sciences so she can go on to become a Physical Therapist.
Dillon Adamy
Class of 2019

Team co-captain, Dillon Adamy, runs cross-country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the spring. Dillon competes in the 1600m and 800m races during both track seasons and the 5K in cross-country. Recently, he anchored the 4x800m relay team (including Gavin Richards, Andrew Trapp, and Chris Fisher) to a gold medal in the Group IV state relay championship. Dillon placed third in the Skyland Conference in the individual 800m and won a gold medal in the State Sectional Championship in the individual 800m race. Last year, the relay team (including Ray Sellaro, Andrew Trapp, and Gavin Richards) ran in the Championship of America final at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. They also broke the school record and Lehigh Valley record running a 7:46 at the New Jersey Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC in June. In cross-country, Dillon made the first team Skyland Conference in the fall. Outside of running for North, Dillon volunteers with the Hunterdon Lions Track Club. He participated in Ski Club his freshman and sophomore year and played freshman soccer. An interesting fact about Dillon is he broke his hip during a race his sophomore year and still finished the race with a personal best time. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with his friends, snowboarding, eating sushi, and watching Netflix. Next year, Dillon will be attending the University of New Hampshire on a partial running scholarship for the Division 1 Wildcats. He plans to major in Business Administration.

North Hunterdon High School students won second place at the State Championship at the NJ High School Battle of the Books Competition:
(left to right) Callisto Morgan, Lizzy Caso, Paeton Horsch, Alicia Chapman, Shae Marks, and Jadyn Funkhouser.

Teams from North Hunterdon High School won first and second place in the 2019 NJ High School Battle of the Books competition at Middlesex County College on Feb. 25. The High School Battle of the Books challenges students to read nine novel-length books and then work as teams to answer trivia questions about the books.
The NHHS squad of Natalie Bonilla, Liz Hack, Rena Li, Nico Pinzon, Valerie Paolillo and Jazzy Parliyan bested 22 other teams from across the state to win the first-place trophy. Their classmates Lizzy Caso, Alicia Chapman, Jadyn Funkhouser, Paeton Horsch, Callisto Morgan, and Shae Marks prevailed in a sudden-death run-off against Edison High School to win second place.
The NHHS Battle brigade comprised 18 students working on three teams. In addition to reading the titles on the Battle of the Books list, team members prepared by writing practice trivia questions, running drills on author-title recognition, and competing in scrimmage rounds of questioning in the weeks leading up to the state meet. At that event, North competitors wore T-shirts designed by team member Valerie Paolillo.

“Credit for this victory goes to every member of the Battle of the Books club, which is a completely student-run team,” said NHHS librarian Martha Hickson. “All of these kids have worked incredibly hard since September. It was thrilling to see that work pay off so spectacularly.”
