NY Recycles Calendars - Now Taking Orders for 2019 
The  2019 NY Recycles Calendars are close to completion - and the DEC is asking interested people to reserve copies now. Read More about the calendar and how to get a supply for distribution. Melissa Young Appointed to NYSAR 3 Board of Directors
Melissa Young
In September, the NYSAR3 Board of Directors appointed Melissa Young as the new Chapter 6 representative. Melissa, who previously served on the NYSAR3 Board, has over 10 years experience leading sustainability programs. Her work is focused on developing sustainable materials management (SMM) education- al programs and providing community assistance. She spearheaded the first SMM Stewardship programs in Puerto Rico and New York. She was also active in the development of the Re-Clothe NY campaign, the NYS Organics Summit, and Plastic Free Waterways. She has also served on the boards of the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) and Queens County Farm Museum. Melissa has an M.S. in Natural Resource Management from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF), and a bachelors degree from SUNY Binghamton.
Hudson Valley and Long Island Locations
SMM Tours Include MRFs, Compost and Habitat Facilities
In September the Syracuse University Center for Sustainable Community Solutions (with the support of NYSAR3), facilitated tours of SMM facilities in Hudson Valley and Long Island. Read More about the events. 
Repair Cafes - Teaching People to "Fix It - Don't Toss It"
Repair Cafés - free community events that bring broken items together with expert volunteers - do more than divert waste. They signal that we are better off when we see our own community in the midst of cooperation, creativity, and downright decency, where goals are achieved and positive outcomes realized. Fall 2018 Round 
GREEN SCHOOLS GRANTS - Still Taking Applications
Close to 100 K-12 schools in New York State have benefited from NYSAR3's Green School Grants since the program was established in 2005.  Applications will be accepted through Oct. 31 for the Fall round of grants,which provides up to $500 per school to rejuvenate existing programs or to develop new programs centered around the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle). 
NYSAR3 Chapters Tour Monroe County Ecopark
Members of NYSAR3 Chapters 7, 8 and 9 held a joint meeting and toured the Monroe County ecopark and the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute at RIT. Read More about the event.
Plastic Free Waters Partnership Meeting - November 13
The Plastic Free Waters Partnership is holding a full partnership meeting on Nov. 13.  at the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, Region 2, 290 Broadway, NYC. The meeting will feature a panel discussion on Design, Innovation and the Circular Economy. Visit the website to find out about the event. 
Food Waste Movie Screened for New York City Groups
On Oct.14 NYSAR3-NYC (Chapter 2) partnered with the Brooklyn Solid Waste Advisory Board, the Borough President, and other organizations committed to reducing food waste, to sponsor Anthony Bourdain's film, Wasted! The Story of Wasted Food . The event included panelists from BKRot , Smiling Hogs Head Ranch , and Rescuing Leftover Cuisine .
Grow NYC Champions
Since 2010, GrowNYC's Recycling Champions Program  (RCP)  has helped over 400 NYC public schools create effective recycling programs.  Currently, RCP is working with the first 100 Zero Waste Schools. News From the DEC
Several updates have been reported by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation this fall. Read more about:
  • The fourth round of grant funding from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) is being made available to help municipalities across the State address costs associated with the collection and recycling of eligible electronic wastes (e-waste).  The NYSDEC will accept applications for these grants beginning in January 2019.  
  • The "Drug Take Back Act" calls for the establishment of an industry-funded, statewide pharmaceutical drug take-back program;
Legal Fact Sheets Cover Food Donation Specifics in NY
Recently passed laws in New York State affect issues about donating or diverting food that might otherwise go to waste. In partnership with Harvard Food Law & Policy and Center for EcoTechnology, four legal fact sheets have been created to address common legal questions about food donation and food scraps diversion in New York State. Successful Drug Take-Back Program To Be Continued
Due to overwhelming support from staff and patients, all five New York hospitals that participated in a drug take-back pilot program will continue to collect unused pharmaceuticals for safe disposal in convenient on-site kiosks and through pre-paid mail-back envelopes. Read More about the six-month pilot, conducted by the Product Stewardship Institute and the New York Product Stewardship Council.
