December at the Downtown Synagogue
A message from Rabbi Silverman

Hanukkah means "dedication." It celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE after it had been desecrated by the Seleucids. And in our time, it can also be an opportunity to (re)dedicate ourselves to the sacred work we do.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday at our Annual Meeting as we express our gratitude for the dedication of our incredible outgoing board members and elect leaders who are dedicated to strengthening the future of this sacred community.

We are blessed to have a dedicated group of lay leaders who are exploring new service times and formats in 2019. And in January we will also have the opportunity to rededicate ourselves to lifelong learning, as we expand our educational offerings for adults, kids, and families.

I want to personally thank you for inspiring me as I dedicate myself to this community, and look forward to doing so in the years to come. Each and every one of us bring light and strength to one another, and when we join together, the future of our community is very bright. Happy Hanukkah.

Help the Downtown Synagogue grow!

As we close out yet another spectacular year at the synagogue, in the spirit of the Hanukkah celebration of light and miracles, please help us keep the light of Judaism burning in the heart of Detroit by making a donation today. Your donation will be doubled through a very generous new matching gift of $50,000. Everything we do is free of charge, which has been our commitment to the metro Detroit Jewish Community for almost 100 years. But it costs us money to keep it free. Please click here to make your donation now. We thank you for your support!

Call for Mi Shebeirach

During our Shabbat morning worship, we read the names of people in our community who are in need of healing. As we invoke God's blessing, we also become more aware of the people who could use a little extra care. Please let us know if you would like us to read the name of a loved one.

Clean House!
As we work to clean up and clear out in our Synagogue, we ask your cooperation. If you notice a spill, please wipe it up. If you drop crumbs, please clean them up. If you use the kitchen, please clean up. If you have extra papers or handouts, please take them home to recycle them. Just a reminder: please no food or drinks (other than water) are allowed on the 2nd floor. As we continue to create our welcoming communal home, please help us to keep it inviting.
