The Visitor's Center at Laguna Atascosa NWR will be closed December 24 and 25, 2018.
Thanks for making 2018 a conservation-filled year!
Your support helped us to...
Restoring Holly Beach
We partnered with USFWS to restore 153 acres of coastal prairie, removed
8,500 lb of trash ,
and installed nearly 5,000 ft of fencing to prevent illegal dumping and offroading!

We worked with TXDOT to find a permanent solution to brown pelican mortalities on Hwy 48 and raise public awareness about this issue
We finished creating a 30 minute documentary, A South Texas Treasure , about the refuge (Now available in our nature store!) and distributed 600 copies free of charge to Region 1 schools in the RGV.
Supporting rising conservationists
This year the Friends group provided the funding for an ocelot intern, Miranda Butler-Valverde, and a visitor services intern, Karen Ceballos, for the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. We’ve also partnered with UTRGV to support a landscape conservation intern, Jim Stilley.
Thanks to everyone who has donated their time and money to conserving our cherished Laguna Atascosa!
Help us expand our reach in 2019!
Next year we hope to achieve even more! Please help us reach our goals by renewing your Friends membership
Some of our goals for next year:

  • Expand the internship program to continue to support young conservationists
  • Increase educational opportunities for local youth at the Refuge through more volunteer events and educational programming
  • Assist USFWS with the necessary infrastructure needed to open the Bahia Grande Unit to the public
  • Continue to support ocelot research and conservation through GPS data collar subscriptions
  • Continue to acquire properties for land conservation and wildlife corridors
