DEC Extends Comment Deadline on PART 360
On March 16 the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) released for public comment draft revisions to Part 360 Solid Waste Management Facilities (Part 360), which included a 120-day comment period. However, numerous stakeholders successfully requested an extension to the comment period - and the new deadline for written comments on the Part 360 express terms and DGEIS is Sept. 13, 2016. Recycling Pre-Conference to Focus on Plastics
The 27th Annual New York State Recycling Conference,at The Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown, will feature a one-day pre-conference titled "Reducing the Vortex of Plastics Confusion" on Nov. 2, followed by the 2-day conference. Read More about planned sessions, events and activities.
Nominations Open for Recycling Leadership Awards
Consider nominating an outstanding recycler this year for one of the five categories of NYSAR3's Recycling Leadership Award.  Applications  are accepted until Oct. 7, 2016.
EPA Awards Recognize New York Environmentalists
The U.S. EPA recently  honored 28 individuals, organizations and businesses from across New York State with Environmental Champion Awards for their achievements in protecting public health and the environment. Read more.
Finger Lakes ReUse Opens Second Facility

Finger Lakes ReUse celebrated the Grand Opening of its new Ithaca ReUse Center this spring and now has two retail stores in Tompkins County - the Triphammer ReUse Center in the Town of Lansing and the Ithaca ReUse Center in the City of Ithaca. Approximately 6 miles apart, both stores are open daily. In the first six months of 2016 the two stores combined received over 175 tons of donated goods and retailed them for more than $350,000. Finger Lakes ReUse now employs 22 living wage workers.
SU-EFC Offering Series of SMM Tours Across NY State
SU-EFC is Offering Series of SMM Tours for Summer and Fall
Syracuse University Environmental Finance Center (SU-EFC), in collaboration with NYSAR³ and other local organizations, is coordinating a series of tours across New York State of a wide variety of sustainable materials management (SMM) facilities. The tours, (free for NYSAR3 members) are also open to the public ($15/person) and include lunch and transportation. Organics Council Starting Plans for 2017 Summit
The Organics Council is presently evaluating needs for future training opportunities and developing topics of interest.  Read More about plans for the 3rd Annual NYS Organics Summit, to be held Spring 2017.
NYSAR3 Board Retreat Held at Carey Institute in June

The NYSAR3 Board of Directors held their annual retreat June 9 to reflect on the successes of the past year and identify goals for the future. NYSAR3 extends special thanks to the Carey Institute for Global Good in  Rensselaerville, NY for providing superb meeting space, accomodations and hospitality in a picturesque setting. At the retreat, the Board celebrated the successes of the Re-Clothe NY campaign, Statewide Organics Summit, Annual Recycling Conference and Federation of NY Solid Waste Associations conference. Highlights of the retreat include discussions for future public outreach campaigns, increased opportunities and benefits for members, legislative support for issues critical to the industry, and plans for continued enhancement of existing programs. 
Jefferson County Cooperative Ext. Gets EPA Grant
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $40,000 environmental education grant to the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County. Cornell Cooperative Extension's project establishes composting and recycling programs at three rural youth camps that serve low income children in northern New York. Read More. 
City of Buffalo Celebrates Anniversary of 34 and More
The City of Buffalo celebrated Earth Day this year with a one year anniversary of the 34 and More Buffalo Recycles campaign.
A new event added this this year was the Green Window City art exhibit. - an Earth Day art walk showing in Buffalo from April 22 until May 6.

Central NY Compost Workshop Holds Tours in June
The Central New York Compost Workshop and Facility Tour, held in June toured facilities across both Cortland and Ithaca. Read More about the event.
 New Paltz Seeking Artwork for ReUse Sculpture Park
New Paltz is encouraging environmental stewardship by partnering with the Roost Art Gallery and New Paltz High School students to paint a mural on the ReUse Center. Read More about this effort and check out some of the artwork.
Lumber Company Uses Landfill Waste Heat in Kilns
A ribbon cutting ceremony June 3 celebrated the completion of Johnson Brothers Lumber's five new drying kilns at the Buyea Rd. Landfill site.
Johnson Brothers is using the excess heat from the Gas-to-Energy plant at the Madison County landfill to dry their lumber. Read More about the innovative cooperative-use project.

Ann Fordock Receives "40 Under 40" Award
Waste360, a major trade publication that serves the U.S. solid waste industry, recently announced that OCRRA's Ann Fordock is a recipient of their annual "40 Under 40" Award. This distinction recognizes young professionals who are making significant contributions in the waste, recycling and organics recovery industries. Over the last seven years, Fordock has served as a Recycling Specialist spearheading OCRRA's annual Earth Day Litter Cleanup, Household Hazardous Waste Program and July Battery Recycling Program. New law Signed in June
Pharmacies Can Now Take Back Unwanted medicine
New Yorkers now have more options to safely dispose unused, unwanted, and expired drugs, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos and Department of Health (DOH) Commissioner Howard Zucker announced recently. Governor Cuomo recently signed legislation that will facilitate drug collection efforts by now allowing pharmacies to take back unwanted drugs. Read More
