Happy Holidays from our house to yours!
I love this time of year, when I can hear the trees swaying in the breeze, when snow covers the grass and trees and everything looks clean, fresh and new. I love that Berkshires' roads are kept plowed and safe for drivers. I love that fires burn in the hearths and the weather is perfect to snuggle with a loved one (human or fur baby). I love sitting and playing cards, board games or reading a book. And, I love having the inn filled with return guests and the sounds of conversation and laughter.
This year, I love that all major religions are celebrating their holidays around the same time and each revolves around bringing light into our dark winter. Years ago, my late husband, Steve, and I got involved with an organization called the Revels. It is a Cambridge, MA based organization which produces performances around Christmas celebrating different cultures and traditions around a central theme. Performances always include singing, dancing, music, poetry and prose. This poem, written by Susan Cooper, titled
The Shortest Day
, is one of my favorites and ends every performance.
So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive,
And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, reveling
.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us – Listen!!
All the long echoes sing the same delight,
This shortest day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!
