Letter from the President

Dear Friend of The Rep,

What a wonderful year it has been!

As I reflect back upon the past twelve months, I can't express enough gratitude for the large community of supporters that I consider to be a part of our Toledo Rep family: our talented actors and production crews, our devoted students and instructors, our dedicated staff and volunteers, and last but not least, our loyal patrons and generous donors and sponsors.

Your ongoing involvement and support are what makes all of the magic at The Rep possible. So thank you. Thank you many times over for helping us to live out our mission, enriching the cultural arts in our region with high quality productions from talented local artists, while also offering top notch educational programs to youth and adults throughout the area.

Every donation is impactful, but given the time of year, I also want to especially thank the Andersons Fund and Toledo Community Foundation for the $12,500 matching grant to make repairs and enhancements to our  A Christmas Carol set in the coming year, as well as all of the generous individuals and groups that helped us reach this $12,500 matching goal. With over $25,500 currently raised, we are well on our way to making some splendid improvements to this Toledo holiday tradition.

Wishing you all the best now and in the year ahead, as we continue to work together in striving to create a vibrant community through live theatre.

See you at the theatre!

Christopher A. McAnall

For 86 years, the Toledo Repertoire Theatre has delivered entertaining, live theatrical performances to the residents of Northwestern Ohio and Southeastern Michigan. We have a beautiful home on 10th Street, and enjoy being part of the downtown Toledo arts community. We often refer to our Mainstage theatre as the unofficial "gateway" to downtown Toledo. In recent years, the expansion of our Education programs and of opportunities for local playwrights have cemented our position as the premiere Toledo community theatre.

And for 36 years now, The Rep has enriched the year end holiday season with its lavish annual production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. First presented at the theatre's 10th Street stage in 1983, followed by the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle in the 1990s and the Stranahan Theatre in the 2000s, this historic production has been performed at The Valentine Theatre in downtown Toledo since 2011.

This production has evolved and deepened throughout its history, and has truly become a Northwest Ohio holiday tradition, annually bringing the spirit of Yuletide benevolence and charity to thousands of theatregoers of all ages. Many cast and crew members have come to think of it as an indispensable part of their holiday season. Families in the Toledo area consider the production a vital part of their holiday tradition.

Our plan is for this project to be spread over two years. Phase 1 will take place in 2018 and involves repairing and rehabilitating the current set pieces, as well as updating select costumes and technical elements. Phase 2 will take place in 2019 and involves the designing and building of new set pieces, updating additional costumes and technical elements, and creating our own new scenic backdrops. Throughout the process, the goal is to enhance the set with a fresh new look drawing upon the talents of local Toledo artists, while also providing and ensuring the utmost safety for our cast and crew

Properly and thoroughly done, with the generous support of the community, this project will facilitate the continuation of this beautiful production for years to come, keeping this priceless holiday tradition alive for tens of thousands of area theatre goers and performing artists in the region. With over $25,500 already raised collectively, we are well on our way to covering the full 2-year project budget of $37,650.

Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. is a public charitable organization created by citizens of our community to enrich the quality of life for individuals and families in our area. In existence since 1973, the Foundation has more than 800 funds with assets of approximately $287 million. The Foundation provides philanthropic services for individuals, families, businesses and corporations to meet their charitable giving needs. For more information on the Foundation, visit the organization's website at www.toledocf.org or follow them on Facebook.

With the holidays just around the corner, consider giving your loved ones the gift of live theatre this giving season!

With an endless list of plays, readings, and musicals in our 2019 line-up and with educational opportunities from our Rep Ed program for adults, teens, and kids, you are sure to please everyone on your list this year!

Feeling extra giving? Consider giving an end of the year tax-deductible donation to the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. The Rep strives to be a theatrical home for local actors, directors, designers, stage managers, techies, and playwrights. Ticket sales and tuitions cover only part of our operational costs, and so in this season of giving, we ask for your help. Every tax-deductible donation, large or small, makes a difference!

All roads are blocked, and a few weary travelers are going to have to hole up there until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse, is the passenger with the most to worry about. • ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR!

  • Paul Fruhwirth

  •
  • Paul was first bitten by the acting bug when he was only two months old. Once he recovered from the infection, he landed his first starring role as Baby Jesus in his neighborhood holiday pageant at only four months old. Later in life, Paul went on to have a love for the theatre, comedy, improv, sketch writing, and stand-up comedy. Beginning in 2012, Paul pursued a formalized education at The Second City Training Center in Old Town, a small neighborhood in the city of Chicago. Paul graduated from The Second City's Improv Program, the sketch comedy program, the stand-up comedy program, as well as the Writing for Late Night TV program.

While Paul's first passion is the stage, he has learned to expand that love into corporate America. In order to pay for his addiction to gummy bears and in-app purchases, Paul spends his days facilitating training sessions, sales presentations and traveling across the country on the speaking circuit.

Paul has appeared at Zany's Chicago, The Laugh Factory Chicago, The Second City Etc. Stage, and his sketches have appeared in The Second City's Skybox Theater. His mother is an Instructor of Performing Arts in Chicago, and specifically asked to be included in his biography. Paul's cat, "Melrose Place" or "Melly" for short, does not find him funny in the least.

"A Dickens of a tradition: Rep's "A Christmas Carol" returns to the Valentine!"

"For the Rep, this is the 36th year of doing an adaptation of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol.

The first adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol to be performed on The Rep's stage came in the form of a musical titled Mr. Scrooge, performed in 1983. Mr. Scrooge was produced for two seasons before the theater opted to go with an adaptation under the more common title of Dickens' book itself, A Chris tmas Carol. This year's adaptation marks the 36th retelling of Charles Dickens' classic, adapted by Bill Quinlan, David Jex, and Debra Ross Calabrese".

" 16 YEARS OF HUMBUG! - PAUL CAUSMAN IN THE TOLEDO REP'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL"

"Very few actors get an opportunity to return to a role, even twice," said Paul Causman (R, as Scrooge). "But with Christmas Carol, I've gotten to revisit this now 16 times. And that is so rare for an actor. It's a real honor."  When the Toledo Rep's production of A Christmas Carol takes to the stage at the Valentine Theatre on November 30, it will mark the 16th year that veteran actor Paul Causman will p ortray Ebenezer Scrooge.

Well, actually the 17th year. But Causman himself doesn't count the first one. It was back in 1987 when Causman - then the Artistic Director of the Toledo Rep - got a call from the actor playing Scrooge in that year's production of the Charles Dickens' classic.

"He called me on a Tuesday during the run of the show. We used to do these shows at the 10th Street Theatre," Causman said. "He called from the hospital with pneumonia, he couldn't come and do the role. So I learned it overnight and went on stage the next day."
