Santa attended the 4-H Santa's Workshop held in Romeo, Saturday, December 15th. Make and take Holiday crafts were made, and the hot chocolate bar with a variety of mixable was delicious! Let's make this a yearly event.

inke receives 2018 4-H Lifetime Achievement Award
|
Mr. Allan Rinke was awarded the 2018 Lifetime Award at the 2018 Macomb County 4-H Awards Event in Clinton Township on November 4th. Mr. Rinke was a former club leader for Ray's Riding Rascals. He continues to assist with the club's annual tack sale to this date. He can be found walking around speaking on his bullhorn during the sale. Mr. Rinke reminisced fondly about his experiences in 4-H when he accepted his plaque. Thank you Mr. Rinke for a lifetime of service to Macomb County 4-H youth.

Congratulations to 2018 Mark of Excellence Award recipient David Casto!
Macomb County 4-H'er David Casto received a 2018 Mark of Excellence medal, and his winning essay was added to the Mark of Excellence history book at the Michigan 4-H Foundation and State 4-H Office at MSU Extension. The essay is also on display at the Kettunen Centerin Tustin, Michigan. David is a member of Ray Community 4-H Club. He has participated in the Birds & Poultry, Rabbits & Cavies, Sheep and Shooting Sports project areas. He has been in 4-H for two years.

Macomb County 4-H
true leaders ages 11 and older have an opportunity to be recognized for the great work they do in
4-H by completing a state award application. A Michigan
4-H State Award is the highest honor bestowed on a Michigan 4-H member and provides an opportunity to receive recognition for their engagement in rich learning experiences that result in outstanding knowledge and
life-skill development.
State award applications are divided into four categories: Mark of Excellence essay contest
(11-12 years old), junior state award (13-15 years old), senior state award (16-19 years old) and group awards
(13-19 years old). The application process and selection is determined by the age of the 4-H member.

Final candidates for the junior, senior and group level awards in each project area will be selected to participate in the State Awards program during 4-H Exploration Days in June, where final selection and announcement of winners will take place.

Armada Fair Youth Livestock Committee Elections - Jan. 28
Elections for the Armada Fair Youth Livestock Committee will take place on Monday, January 28, 2019. There are both adult and youth positions that are open. Every club that participates in the Armada Fair Youth Livestock Auction and/or Silent Auction is strongly encouraged to have representation on the committee. Elections will take place at 7 pm at the Grange Hall located on the Armada Fair Grounds.

Armada Fair Youth Livestock Sale Participation Forms are due in January
Each youth planning to sell his or her livestock project at the 2019 Armada Fair must return a completed Armada Fair Youth Livestock Sale Participation form to the Livestock Sale Committee Secretary by the second Friday in January. Contact Livestock Sale President if you have questions - Matthew Konarski (313) 805-2084. Completed forms may be mailed or dropped off at the Armada Fair Office, 74280 Fair Street, Armada MI 48005. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday (closed during the holidays). Market livestock must be tagged on the scheduled date and times. Check the Armada Fair website,

Resolve to have a great 4-H year

As we start to think ahead to the New Year, how can 4-H clubs resolve to improve in the year ahead? Here are ten suggestions to make the upcoming year a successful one.
Resolve that:
1. Club meetings will start and end on time.
2. Business meetings will follow Robert's Rules of Order and that all club paperwork, such
as
minutes, club inventory and financial statements, will be completed in a timely manner.

3. All members will take part in discussions and have a say in decisions that are made. Keep a chart with
each members' name and when they speak at business meetings.
4. The club meeting place will be a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for all club members.
5. Fun will be included in each meeting.
6. A learning activity will be included in each club meeting. Ideas include exploring a new 4-H curriculum,
having members volunteer to do a demonstration, doing a show and tell about each members' favorite
project, or bringing in a guest speaker.
7. The club will pursue at least one community service project chosen, planned and celebrated by the club.
8. New members will have a buddy they may talk with about any 4-H questions.
9. The 4-H pledge will be said at every meeting.
10. Every club member will be recognized in some way to let them know they are cared about.

The 4-H Leader Meet is an opportunity for 4-H volunteers and older club members to swap programming ideas while developing their skills around club management, 4-H finances, youth-adult partnerships and more. In the past, this has been done at a day-long conference where attendees register for sessions that are of interest to them.

Citizenship Washington Focus registration available
Registration for the 2019 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) program, taking place June
22-29, is now available. Program participants learn about the nation's government by participating in hands-on leadership workshops and touring historical sites in Washington, D.C. The cost of the 2019 4-H CWF program is $1,500 and includes all meals (except seven meals in transit), lodging and transportation. Visit

4-H Capitol Experience is now recruiting for 2019 participants! This annual statewide program, occurring March 17-20, helps prepare youth for active citizenship by focusing on civic engagement and public policy.
More than 100 teens from around the state converge on Lansing to experience state government in action and learn how they can influence policy issues. Participants interact with legislators, state agency staff, and other resource people to learn how policy is made.
Attendees will leave the program having a great understanding of the responsibilities of a citizen, be able to identify different aspects of a policy issue that may affect individuals and communities, and know potential careers in public policy.

4-H Day at the Breslin - February 24

Gather with 4-H friends, families, volunteers and staff to cheer on the
MSU women's basketball team as they take on the University of Michigan Wolverines on Sunday, Feb. 24 at MSU's Jack Breslin Student Events Center.
Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. with the game beginning at 2 p.m.
Make sure to come early to engage in the activities set up around the concourse showcasing various Michigan 4-H programs and events and to mingle with other Michigan 4-H'ers.

Save the date for the 4-H Alumni Tip-Off Reception!

From 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Feb. 24, Michigan 4-H alumni will gather to celebrate 4-H with other alums from across the state at the 4-H Alumni Tip-Off Reception! Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy snacks and drinks, take a photo with Sparty and meet other 4-H alumni before enjoying a women's basketball game at the Breslin Center. Organized by Michigan 4-H and the Michigan 4-H Foundation, the Tip-Off event takes place before 4-H Day at the Breslin, for which free tickets are available.

Winterfest - Feb. 2-3
The 4-H Winterfest workshop scheduled for Feb. 2-3, 2019, at Kettunen Center is open for registration. Youth ages 8-12 who attend 4-H Winterfest will spend two days learning about many different project areas while meeting youth from around the state. 4-H Winterfest offers participants and chaperones an opportunity to experience Kettunen Center in an overnight camp setting. Youth participate in hands-on sessions that range from crafts to shooting sports.
4-H Shooting Sports Archery Certification Workshop - January 26-27
The Michigan 4-H Shooting Sports Archery Certification Workshop is January 26-27, 2019 at 4 Square Sportsmen's Club in Jeddo, Mich. Participants ages 16 and older will meet from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. each day. This workshop is for those who want to improve their knowledge and skills in shooting sports and gain the skills, resources and background to successfully teach shooting sports and conduct range activities. This workshop is archery specific. Certification is a requirement to facilitate live fire on a range. All adult leaders need to be approved by their local MSU Extension office and have completed the 4-H Volunteer Selection Proess. The $65 registration fee includes resources, snacks and lunch both days. Register by January 7, 2019. Enhance your engineering skills at the hands-on, 4-H Robotics Leaders Workshop, March 16-17, at the Kettunen Center in Tustin!
The workshop is open to adult and teen volunteer leaders ages 13 and up interested in developing and growing a 4-H robotics club.
Participants will be introduced to and learn basic robotic skills, as well as explore different types of robotic projects within LEGO Mindstorms EV3, VEX Robotics, LEGO Wedo and Junk Drawer Robotics.

2019 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest for Michigan 4-H Members
Michigan 4-H youth can improve their science, knowledge, writing and research skills and win a cash prize by entering the 2019 4-H Beekeeping Essay Competition. This year's essay topic is
Honey Varietals, State to State.
Each jar of honey reflects an unrepeatable combination of climate, soil, weather and flowers. Each state has unique honey varietals that beekeepers can market to their customers. Contestants should identify one unique varietal to their state and discuss the flower's uniqueness and how beekeepers can effectively market that varietal. Please include a photo of the varietal's flower, an interview with a local beekeeper who collects this varietal, and a recipe that highlights the varietal.
The top three winners nationally will receive cash prizes of $750, $500 and $250, and winning essays will be published in
ABF Quarterly
, the magazine of the American Beekeeping Federation. The three national winners and the top winner of each state will receive a book about honey bees, beekeeping or honey.
Essay length should be 750 to 1000 words and will be judged on the scope of research, accuracy, creativity, conciseness and logic development of the topic. Youth are encouraged to research the topic using a number of sources. Download the complete rules at

Fitting and showing rabbits gives 4-H'ers the chance to compete with others based on the skills they demonstrate, general knowledge of rabbits and the participant's preparation, attitude and behavior. The Michigan 4-H Rabbit Fitting & Showmanship Guide,

2019 State 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Show
The State 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Show is January 26, 2019 at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing and is open to participants who are aged 8 to 19 by Jan. 1st. Exhibitors must be Michigan 4-H members and own the rabbits or cavies they enter. Register online before the event (recommended), or 6:30-8 a.m. the day of the event.
