Series:   "Belonging"

Sermon :   "The Outcast "

Scripture :  Luke 8:26-39

This Sunday
We all have times in our lives when we don't feel connected. We have times when something we have done has broken ties with those we've loved. We have experiences of being outcast from community. This week, we'll meet an outcast from Biblical times and we'll think about times when we've felt like an outcast or when others might feel like outcasts. We'll see if there are lessons to be learned from the experience of being outside of community.
We'll also encounter Jesus trying to get away from the crowds, but instead running into a Gentile who has been banished from living in community. We'll consider the outcast from Jesus' perspective. When we are inconvenienced by meeting someone who is in our way when we are trying to do something we want to do, we have our ways of dealing with them. We'll see what Jesus does when he encounters the outcast. Read Luke 8:26-39 to prepare.

MINISTRY NEWS
The Way Forward Info Evening
Monday, October 22
Have you heard about a special General Conference in February and been unsure what it meant? Do you know what the bishops are recommending for how the structure of the United Methodist Church may change as a result of the General Conference? Are you curious what it will mean for Aldersgate? Come to church on Monday October 22 at 7:00pm and learn more. Members of the CRC committee have gathered information from the conference and the UM news service and distilled it into a few handouts and slides. The evening will have time to listen, respond, and question together. We will end the evening with a short prayer time for the church and the denomination and our siblings and family members in Christ throughout the world.
All Saints Sunday
November 4
On Sunday, November 4 at both services we will remember and honor all the people we have loved and released to God through death in the hope of new life. We invite you who have lost loved ones since last All Saints' Sunday (November 5, 2017) to fill out the Sunday attendance form now with your loved one's name and relationship to you. These names will be spoken, a candle lit for each one, we will give thanks for them, and pray for us all as we continue to work through our grief and seek renewed confidence and peace in the promises of Christ Jesus. The deadline to submit names is Sunday, October 28 .
Cluster Conference
November 4
There will be a Cluster Conference on Sunday, November 4 starting at 7:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Bellevue. Presided over by our District Superintendent, Rev. Rich Lang, this is a communal event with other Methodist churches in our area to gather the laity  to have civil, open, serious conversation about the mission of the UMC. Everyone is invited to attend.  Using a Table Talk format, there will be three movements to this Cluster Conference.
a.)     Setting the table with a teaching about stages of faith.
b.)    Opening the table with a Bible study about the content of Jesus' teachings.
c.)   The main course being conversation about The Way Forward and the future of our District (mission field).
S lide Help Needed
Moving in to the fall, Pastor Laura would like to work with a few other people on designing and organizing the slides for first service worship. The process usually only takes 1-2 hours a week and is a lot of fun for creative, technology-oriented people. Please contact Pastor Laura if you are interested, willing to learn the process, and can help as part of a team with this important work for the church.
CRC Panel Discussion
Saturday, November 3, 2018 - 2:00 - 4:00
This is an opportunity for members of our congregation to listen to, and ask questions of, Methodists who are in churches that have gone through the process of deciding whether or not they want to become a Reconciling Congregation.

There will be panel members from churches that recently became reconciling, churches that have been reconciling for a long time, and churches that went through the process and decided not to become reconciling.

Church members can submit questions they would like asked of the panel ahead of time to a question box, bring questions with them to ask the panel members directly, or just come to listen.

Welcome to the Table:

Rummage Sale Update
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the RUMMAGE SALE! Thank you to those who set up and took down tables and signs, those who donated and bought items, those who organized, priced, cashiered, sold, packed and hauled.  The team work made it happen and your contributions of time and energy were greatly appreciated.   All together we made a grand total of $2,350 for the mission travel fund and the youth retreats.  And we were able to find "good homes" for our extra items at: The Baby Corner, The Friends of the Library, Sophia Way, Mary's Place, The Men's Homeless Shelter, and Goodwill. A special thanks to the wrestling team at Newport High School who hauled away leftovers to Goodwill to support their fundraiser.   If you donated items to the rummage sale, click here   for a donation letter for your tax records.
A Message From Melinda Lilley
Finance Update & Budget
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1
For me, this verse describes the transition not only from Summer to Autumn but the various transitions that are happening with our church finances.

First of all, we welcome Jill Swanson as our new Treasurer and we thank Marie Vieth for her years of service. Jill is also the Treasurer for the Aldersgate Christian PreSchool. She can be reached at

Second, Melinda Lilley is moving out of the Finance Chair position into a Communications role. Jim Phillips has graciously accepted the finance team leadership role. He can be reached at

Third, the Aldersgate July 2018-June 2019 Fiscal Budget that was approved by the Core Leadership Team is now available to view. Please click here to download or ask for a copy from Wendi in the office.  We went from a previous fiscal budget of $511,547.05 to the current fiscal budget of $463,613.21 (about $50,000 less). Needless to say, we were forced to cut some maintenance and other needed services in order to achieve a balanced budget. If you have any questions, please contact: [email protected].
A quarterly update with the status of our income and expenses will be available shortly. Your continued faithful giving is appreciated.

Finally, I'd like to thank the members of the Finance Team that I've had the pleasure of working with over the last years, especially Jim Phillips, Darrell Lowe, Brad Brewer, and Gary Swearingen. Thank you for serving our community.

Yours in Faith, Love, Health and Service,
Melinda

Thank you in advance for all of your support for this important and fun community outreach event!
Stop the Bleed!
Monday, October 29
Injuries often can be repaired if the victim does not bleed out.
The number of deaths in large disasters or even in home accidents can be reduced if someone is trained to stop the bleeding. Evergreen Hospital has volunteer instructors who will teach a class at Aldersgate in how to stop bleeding properly for all types of injuries, and for all age groups from infants through the elderly.  The class is on Monday, October 29 from  6:30-8:30pm   If you will attend, please sign up or contact Dorothy Bennett.
Youth Group (6th-12th Grade)

Parenting Forum: Raising children in a World of Deep Divides
Saturday, October 20, 10:00am-12:30pm
Bellevue First United Methodist Church

Hearing someone share their faith story and the importance of
spirituality from a  different perspective is a powerful gift.  We both want to invite all of you to join us  this Saturday  at  10:00am
at Bellevue First United Methodist Church to hear the keynote speakers at our co-sponsored Parenting Forum.  The superintendent of Bellevue School District, Dr. Ivan Duran, will be sharing about his personal faith journey. Following, Imam Jamal
Rahman, Muslim Sufi Interfaith Minister, will share about spiritual practices he learned from his parents. Both of these amazing speakers are relevant to all of us
especially in our faith community and we hope you will take part in this event.

The parenting forum has been restructured due to lower than  expected registrations.  The forum will now run from  10:00am - 12:30pm  with the above mentioned key note speakers being at  10:15am  and 11:00am.  The remainder of the time will be a resource fair for parents.  There is no fee for this event and light refreshments will be provided.

Registration can be done online at Parenting-Forum-Registration  or at the door starting at 9:30am.  For more information visit our Facebook page:

Warm Socks Needed
School has started and rains have returned!  The need for warm socks touches everyone, especially the homeless.  Please leave new socks in the basket across from the office.  They will be delivered to Congregations for the Homeless, Griffin House, Mary's Place, Operation Nightwatch and Sophia Way.   Griffin House may be new to many in our congregation.  Located in Renton, Griffin House serves homeless boys.  Imagine what a pair of socks in Seahawks colors would mean to its new owner!
