Music Activities

Research has found that musical experiences in childhood can accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of language and reading skills. Music also promotes the development of important skills such as thinking, motor coordination, creativity and understanding emotions. To further encourage and support this development, adults/caregivers must provide frequent music opportunities and allow children to play an active role. Here are four activities to help you get started:

  • Language- Music helps children practice pronouncing words and sentences. Sing songs and encourage children to join in!
  • Motor Skills- Music with dancing/motions helps children control their arms and legs. Incorporate motions into singing.
  • Emotions- Music can be soothing and comforting. Play classical and/or soft music.
  • Routines- Music can help children learn/understand routines. Sing the clean-up song to signal clean up time!
