MSDH Helps Women Get Screened
Whether it's due to lack of access, lack of time or lack of money, Mississippi has one of the lowest rates for breast cancer screening. Fortunately, the
Mississippi Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
strives to provide women ages 50-64 with mammography screenings from contracted providers using federal and matching funds. Please contact the Mississippi State Department of Health about the program at (601) 576-7466, and they can help you determine whether your patient qualifies.

Car Tag Generates Income for
Our Foundation;
Do YOU Have Yours?
MAFP Foundation has seen a slight reduction in the number of people purchasing the Live Healthy car tag, and wants to remind every MAFP member to request it when your tag is up for renewal.
The number of cars sporting the MAFP's tag peaked at 402 in 2016, the highest number since its introduction in 2013. There was a dip downward in 2017. We would like to see that number rebound in 2018, as 317 have been sold so far this year.
That's where you come in! Remember that $24 of each car tag purchase comes directly to the MAFP Foundation to support its programs. In 2017, we received $9,168 in total income from the Live Healthy tag, which is about 15 percent of the Foundation's budgeted income.

Mississippi Cigarette Tax Momentum Continues
The use of tobacco products remains the No. 1 cause of preventable death in Mississippi, one of the many reasons a broadly supported policy to increase the state's cigarette tax is gaining support. Momentum for the policy since last session continues with help from the Invest in a Healthier Future coalition, in which MAFP is a proud partner.
This broad-based group of partners is working within communities and with Mississippi lawmakers to save lives, improve the health of citizens and support the economy through an increase in the state cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack (up from 68 cents, one of the lowest in the nation). The proposed increase has the potential to prevent 13,200 premature smoking-related deaths, prevent 21,700 children from becoming adult smokers, and to help 25,100 current adult smokers quit. The tax also has the potential for big revenue, as well as reducing the cost of healthcare and increasing worker productivity across the state.
Expect to hear more! To stay informed in the meantime, connect with the the Coalition on
