Interior Design Students Craft Shaker Furniture

Second-year Interior Design students in the Furniture Design course taught by Profs. Natalie Ellis and Tracy Howard created Shaker tables using the Creating_Making lab! Shaker furniture is known for its careful attention to proportion, form and function. The opportunity to construct a piece of furniture allows for insight into the way that we conceive and document furniture designs. Beautiful work, all!

RCPL Faculty Member Honored with OU Inclusive Excellence Award

Drs. C. Aujean Lee (GCA's Division of Regional and City Planning) and Gabriela Rios (English) were awarded the Spring 2019 Inclusive Excellence Award from the OU Office of University Community for their class project, (Re)Mapping Norman. This forthcoming oral history collection project and website will present the stories of indigenous people, immigrants, and refugees in the area to help students and the public see how historic events (slavery, genocide, removal, war, and migration) are linked to current experiences and give them a responsibility to account for the consequences of these events today. The inclusive grant is awarded every semester to faculty or staff to support research and innovative projects that address issues of equity, inclusion, inclusive pedagogies, historical contexts on indigenous people, and issues of diversity.

GCA Students in Rome Share "Rome Through Their Eyes"

"Experiencing Rome through my eyes as an architecture student has turned me from a tourist to a traveler. Arriving in Rome for the first time, I felt the need to see every major tourist attraction as an average tourist would. Not until a few weeks into school did I start to understand the vast complexity of the history around me. Attending lectures and walks is when the layers of Rome began to unfold. During these times it is my obligation to zoom-in and fully grasp the history in front of me. To record this data, sketches a produced to analyze the surrounding spaces."
- Conner Van Holten
GCA Student

"Hi, my name is Connor Hopper, and I wanted to take the time to update everyone back home on how I am doing in Rome this semester. The city is so amazingly complex with its rich layers of history; I am thankful for my methods course where we discuss these layers both in lecture and on walks. It is so cool to learn how history has shaped architecture. I also love my studio course. The charrettes are so fun, and the site for our final project is right next to the Colosseum. This trip has also helped me work on my sketching ability and Italian language skills. We are now at the halfway point, and I cannot wait to see what comes next."
