Transforming a Wetter Florida into a Better Florida: Collaborating for Sea-level Rise Resilience

On Monday, October 8, 2018, CES presented a  showcase of exciting and innovative resilience projects to  highlight resiliency initiatives already underway in Broward County and elsewhere in Florida and to raise visibility on enhancing resilience to flooding in Florida.   This non-partisan, science-based set of presentations was co-hosted by CES, Congressman Ted Deutch, Florida Sea Grant, Citizens Climate Lobby, and American Flood Coalition.

This forum was hosted during a King Tide event to bring awareness to the impact of sea-level rise on the southeastern Florida coastline.  This showcase was held in the new School of Architecture Metrolab, a venue in the middle of the Las Olas area in the heart of King Tide events.

  • Assessing inland tidal flood risk by reviewing extreme historical groundwater levels by Dr. Bloetscher, Dr. Polsky, Gerardo Rojas, & Richard Jones, FAU

  • What flooding feels like at home: Utilizing citizens' stories to map resilience by Dr. Polsky, Bridget Huston, & Hallee Meltzer, FAU

  • Where the rubber hits the road: Businesses supporting resilience by Mr. Lindblade, CEO, Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce
  • The role of county extension in climate resilience and adaptation outreach by Dr. Krimsky, Florida Sea Grant
  • Resource resilience and shifting shorelines: Improving habitat for people and sea turtles by Mr. Ankersen, Florida Sea Grant, UF College of Law
  • Improving sea turtle habitat and Broward's beach economy at the same time: Business-city-state-academic collaborations by Dr. Burkholder, Nova Southeastern University

Following the event, CES students and staff met with Dr. John Renne and his CUES researchers on November 30 to assist with testing the sea-level rise Virtual Reality technology that was demonstrated at the King Tide event and to provide feedback about their experiences. 
Funding for Broward's Transportation Future

Great news!  Broward County voters  approved a local one cent, 30-year surtax to increase mobility and address transportation challenges in the county this November 2018.

CES' Dr. Colin Polsky has been assigned to the Appointing Authority for the Transportation Surtax Oversight Board
