I have been a member of NYSAR
3 for several years now, and have always admired and been inspired by the drive, passion and experience of its members. To now be serving as your President is a privilege and an honor. I will do my best to continue to guide our organization along the same progressive and sustainable path as the past presidents, and of course the hard working Board and committee members.
As we head into spring and leave the cold days of winter behind us, I'd like to take a look back at the first 100 days of 2017.

CHAPTER 2 - Michael Reiser,
Office of Recycling Outreach and Education,
GrowNYC
Michael is a Recycling Outreach Coordinator for the Zero Waste Program for GrowNYC, promoting recycling and waste reduction through public outreach at meetings, public events, and on social media. He previously organized electronics recycling collections for Per Scholas. Michael has been working professionally to improve recycling in New York City for 11 years. As Chapter 2 representative he hopes create informative events to engage the New York City recycling community.
CHAPTER 9 - Gary Carrel,
Solid Waste Recycling Specialist,
Erie County
Gary has worked on recycling and environmental issues in Western New York since the mid 1990's. Currently he coordinates the Household Hazardous Waste and Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator Programs and works within County facilities to reduce waste and increase recycling. Prior to this he was the Recycling Coordinator from 2003-2010 and 2013-2015. Gary is on the NYSAR
3 Conference Committee, and on organizing committees of the WNY Environmental Summit and WNY Earth Day Expo at the Buffalo Zoo.
AT-LARGE - Ann Fordock, Recycling Specialist, OCRRA
Ms. Fordock has nearly 9 years' experience in the fields of waste reduction, recycling and solid waste management for the municipal sector. She helps manage the Agency's award winning and nationally recognized recycling programs; with responsibilities of managing OCRRA's composting sites, household battery collection, mercury collection events, the household hazardous waste program and maintaining relationships with the local MRF, haulers and municipalities.

The 2017 International Compost Awareness Week will take place from May 7-13, and is themed "Compost! Healthy Soil, Healthy Food", which draws attention to the important role compost plays in building and maintaining soil vitality and producing nutritious food.

BOLTON LANDING - the 2017 Federation of New York Solid Waste Association's Conference and Trade Show will be held May 21- 24.
Upwards of 700 attendees, from over 32 states, Canada and Europe attend the event at The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, NY. In 18 years,attendance has doubled and the conference has become the "Can't Miss" solid waste and recycling event of the northeast.

On March 28th & March 29th, the 3rd annual Organics Summit was held in Troy selling out the Browns Brewing Revolution Hall venue. This year's theme, Transforming Our Food Waste Systems, gathered 150 organics management professionals. By the end of the year, curbside collection of food scraps, food-soiled paper
and yard waste will reach 3.3 million residents of New York City, according to a March release from
the New York City Department of Sanitation.

Angelina Peone was hired in March to coordinate outreach and education programs throughout Schenectady County, in a partnership between the Schenectady County Office of Economic Planning and Development and Cornell University Cooperative Extension.
