Film Screening: "Jerusalem"
and Panel Discussion

The TCS/NT Interfaith Committee presents this fascinating film and discussion program about one of the most beloved cities in the world: Jerusalem. The film, a 44-minute documentary, explores the powerful hold the city exerts on Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. The film finds that, although the stories of our histories may be different, it's the collective power of those histories that make the city so compelling.
 Following the film will be a panel discussion featuring TCS/NT's Rabbi Or Rose; Father George Fleming from St. James Church; Pastor Carl Franson from the Chatham United Methodist Church; and Jamelah Zidan, Assistant Director, Community Life at the Abode of the Message. The panel, moderated by TCS/NT member Joel Merker, will discuss the significance of Jerusalem in their communities and liturgies.

TCS/NT Reading Series: The Book of Samuel & The Birth of Monarchy
Saturdays - March 9th, 16th, 23rd, & 30th - 1pm

Before Machiavelli's The Prince, there was The Book of Samuel, considered the earliest treatise on politics and power. It details the critical transformation of the Israelites from a fractious coalition of tribes to a unified monarchy with a central government.

This 4-part series of guided discussions, led by TCS/NT member Steve Eidman, will explore how this transformation came about and illustrate the perils in acquiring, keeping, and inheriting power.
The series is free and open to all levels; no Hebrew required, and you're welcome to attend any or all of the sessions.

A Purim Megillah, Spiel, Beer, & Pizza Extravaganza
Thursday, March 21 at 6pm
at the Synagogue
 Join us for our annual Purim Megillah reading and spiel. Steve Eidman will read selections from the Megillah and Robert Zukerman (producer, writer, director, and star) will present his not-ready-for-prime-time-but-always-hilarious Purim spiel. Pizza, beer, and soft drinks will be served.
All are welcome, especially kids. Costumes and noisemakers are encouraged!

TCS/NT member, acclaimed art historian, and author/project director of the 5-volume
Jasper Johns: Catalogue Raisonne of Painting and Sculpture, Roberta Bernstein, will kick off our Conversation Pieces series with an illustrated talk on Jasper Johns.
Bernstein was a 22-year old graduate student when she first met Johns and went on to write her dissertation about the artist - the first time in its history that Columbia University accepted a dissertation on a contemporary artist. Her intellectual relationship with Johns has spanned more than 50 years and today she's recognized as the foremost scholar of his work. In 2017-18 she co-curated the exhibition, "Jasper Johns: 'Something Resembling Truth,'" organized by the Royal Academy of Arts in London, which traveled to the Broad Collection in Los Angeles. Bernstein is professor emeritus of art history at the University of Albany.

This classical music concert to benefit Kids Need Music features musicians
Joel Pitchon (violin), Volcy Pelletier (cello), and Gili Melamed-Lev (piano), playing
works by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms.
All concert proceeds will be used to purchase musical instruments for the
Hudson City School District Band so more children can participate in music instruction and performance.

This documentary follows the construction of the Onkalo waste repository at the Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant in Finland, which is built to last, undisturbed for 100,000 years, the amount of time that must pass before the nuclear waste is no longer hazardous.
The film explores the questions around creating waste, so toxic and deadly, that it must be contained in a structure that will stand longer than any structure in human history.

Concert: Songs for the Earth

Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for students, and $10 for children
TCS/NT members Jody and Bart Schoenfeld are sponsoring this concert to support Citizen's Climate Lobby (CCL), an organization focused on national policies to address climate change. The concert will feature vocalists Amanda Boyd and Carol Curran, pianist Timothy Dunne, pianist Gili Melamed-Lev, and saxaphonist Chris Ferrone, performing songs, arias, and duets by Mozart, Handel, Brahms, Weill, and more - all inspired by nature.
