Hello Rhode Island Members! The RI chapter has had a busy fall season.
In October our membership committee held a Social Night at Gregg's restaurant in North Kingstown where free professional head shots were available thanks to sponsorship from the local RI Massage Envy franchises. There was the debut of the new, updated version of the chapter "hot seat" interviews, these are video interviews that are now posted on the chapter Facebook page check them out.
Also, in October, CCRI held the second in a series of panel discussions entitled "Non-Opioid Pain Treatment Symposium". There were two panels that discussed various treatment options to help combat the opioid overdose problems in RI. James Specker, Director of Government and Industry Relations for AMTA National came into RI for the weekend and attended the symposium.
Two workshops were held, one in November and one in December and both were a great success! CPR class in September was the largest one yet with 65 attending! (see article from the chapter Education chair).
I was lucky enough to be able to attend all of these events as your chapter president.
The chapter has had two board meetings this fall, at the most recent, I was honored to award Raymond Moriyasu as the 2018 inductee into the Rhode Island Massage Therapy Hall of Fame (see article below). Also at this meeting a vote was taken by those board members present to select 2-chapter representatives to attend the 2019 International Massage Therapy Research Conference, hosted by the Massage Therapy Foundation. The 2-chapter representatives that will be attending are Pat Bachus, chapter delegate to the Assembly of Delegates and Kim Medeiros, chapter secretary. I'm sure that Pat and Kim will be able to bring back a wealth of knowledge to share with the chapter.
Starting in early October meetings of the coalition that was formed by Cassie Rawcliffe, chapter government relations chair, started. This coalition is working together to draft amendments to the RI Massage Therapists Licensing Act. These amendments, if passed, will help to move our profession in the right direction for insurance reimbursement for those that would like to pursue medical massage modalities and to help in the fight against opioid addition and alternatives to pain management. I'm proud to say that I am a part of this coalition along with Cassie and several RI chapter members, as well as members of the ABMP.
Early in November I attended the final meeting of the State Massage Therapy Board for the 2018 year. As always, there is interesting information brought forth in these meetings, chair of the board, John Balletto, had just attended this years' conference of the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards.
Mark you calenders! The General Member meeting for the RI chapter will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Holiday Inn in South Kingstown! This is the annual election meeting, one board member position, the financial administrator and one delegate will be voted on at this meeting. Rhode Island Massage Therapy Hall of Fame 2018 Inductee
Congratulations to Raymond Moriyasu the 2018 Rhode Island Massage Therapy Hall of Fame inductee! After 38 years of dedication and service to the massage therapy profession, the AMTA and the Rhode Island chapter Ray is retiring!
Raymond T. Moriyasu, NCTMB, is a 1980 graduate of the Bancroft School of Massage in Worcester, MA and has an AB in Biological Sciences from Brown University and an MA in Agency Counseling from Rhode Island College. He has further training in Polarity Therapy from the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and Sotai.
He has taught at Salve Regina University (Holistic Learning Program) and through the Brown University Learning Community. He currently teaches at the Downeast School of Massage Therapy in Waldoboro, ME.

Emeritus Status is a special honor bestowed upon members of AMTA who have contributed exemplary service and/or knowledge that has benefited massage or the Association.

The Massage Therapy Foundation believes that massage therapy should be accessible to everyone. Our Community Service Grants deliver massage to underserved populations all over the world.
To date we have granted $411,463.49 to 81 Community Service Grants all over the globe, and served diverse populations ranging from prisoners transitioning back to society, to children orphaned by the Japanese tsunami, to farm laborers in Central Mexico. The Community Service Grants also provide valuable data on special populations and health resource disparities. This information can serve our profession in other capacities.

Obtain A New Massage Therapy RI License Through Examiniation or Endorsement
Obtaining a license for massage therapy in the state of RI doesn't have to be a difficult process. There are many components to the application, but the Department of Health has made the clear checklist for new applicants. Whether you have recently graduated from an accredited school and passed the National MBLEx exam, or completed a comparable exam in a prior year but are looking to move your practice to Rhode Island, here are the simple steps to navigate yourself through the process:
- Go to http://www.health.ri.gov/
- Click on LICENSING
- Under "What We License", click on Massage Therapists
- Click on APPLICATION
- Print and fill out a hard copy of the application and follow checklist on first page of the application
- If you have just completed and passed the MBLEx, check "Massage Therapist by EXAMINATION"
- If you have passed the MBLEx exam or comparable exam, and are looking to practicing massage in the state of RI and are coming from another state, check "Massage Therapist by ENDORSEMENT"

Happy Holidays from the Government Relations Committee! More than half of our committee members participated in the coalition team for amending our massage therapy statute, along side members from ABMP and other local LMT's. It was a true collaboration and positive participation of all members involved and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. Currently, our statute has exited our rough draft portion of the proposed amendments and will be heading up to our AMTA national GR team for review. Our lobbyist, Bill Fischer, will also be reviewing the legislature and contacting potential sponsors for the bill. I look forward to updating our membership further as the 2019 legislature session begins and as our efforts continue to develop. Do not forget to contact me with any questions or concerns.

The Chapter hosted 2 educational workshops for the year 2018. In November, we held "Introduction to Cupping" with Scott Raymond which sold out. At the last minute we decided to host a second cupping class to accommodate more members on the same weekend and we were able to fill 20 slots. The class was a blast and very well received by members. On 12/1 and 12/2 we hosted Precision Neuromuscular Technique with Doug Nelson, also a sold out class. The feedback we received was phenomenal. We hope to have more fantastic educational opportunities in 2019 for Licensed Massage Therapists in our area. Check the website for all upcoming events! ri.amtamassage.org
