It's Election Time, But Not at CCUSD
Meet Dr. Tashon McKeithan
November is usually election time for CCUSD, but not this year! This year we have three candidates who filed for three available seats on the CCUSD Board of Education. Because of this, Los Angeles County has decided that there will be no need for a school board election.

Board members Summer McBride and Dr. Steven Levin will come back for a second term on the board and, newcomer Dr. Tashon McKeithan was the only other candidate to file papers. She will automatically assume the seat vacated by Kathy Paspalis, who is retiring from the board.

Tashon McKeithan, currently serves as co-chair of the Fiesta La Ballona committee and said she wants to seek out ways to support the most vulnerable populations that continue to perform below or far below standards in our Culver City schools. As an educator with more than 20 years experience, she is a champion for strong early childhood education, increased professional development for teachers and administrators, supports for social emotional learning and mental health as well as outdoor education. Additionally, she has worked to build external partnerships and has been the recipient of substantial grants used to rebuild an outdoor play space and to create a school-based free mental health clinic to support vulnerable families.

Tashon holds a Master’s degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and a doctoral degree in K-12 Educational Leadership. She began her career teaching elementary school in the South Bronx, NY. She previously worked as a teacher and administrator in public schools in the New York City Department of Education. Tashon currently works as the Director of Early Childhood Programs at The Center for Early Education. Tashon continues to fight for educational equality for all children.
Tashon is married and has one child. She often attends her daughter’s tennis tournaments and gymnastics competitions on the weekends. Tashon enjoys volunteering in her local community and listening to audio books.
CCUSD's Walk-to-School Day Was A Huge Success
We had another amazing Walk to School Day on Wednesday. More than 1,000 kids participated in walk to school events throughout Culver City, collectively burning more than 10,000 calories and removing more than 250 pounds of carbon from the air! Just shows how a little effort and a lot of teamwork can go a long way.

All of our schools participated (El Marino was last Friday) and had a blast. From days like this to every new crosswalk and curb extension, it is awesome to see the city and school district working together to improve safety for all our kids.
Stop Bullying on the Spot!
October is National Bullying Prevention Month!

When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time.

Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.

Backpacks for Kids Seeks Families to Help
In conjunction with CCUSD and Council PTA, "Backpacks for Kids" runs a weekly backpack program to ensure that every child has access to food on the weekends. Each week, plain backpacks are filled with non-perishable food and snacks for eligible children to take home anonymously over the weekend.

There is no cost to participate and enrollment is 100% confidential. If you would like your child to receive a backpack, please leave this form with the School Secretary in the front office of your school.
Students Eligible for K-12 TAP Cards
For just $0.75 a ride for K-12 students, it's a no-brainer to get your student a Transit Access Pass (TAP) card and have it filled with a few bucks at all times.

Not only convenient, riding the bus is safe, cuts down on traffic and is an alternative to walking alone, particularly late at night or in the early morning.

To complete student applications for a TAP card, please visit http://media.metro.net/riding_metro/riders_guide/images/tap_k12_application.pdf

Completed applications can be dropped off in the Culver CityBus office at 4343 Duquesne Avenue (at Jefferson Boulevard).
