Commodity Updates

PEAK SEASON!  AVOCADOS
Growers are currently harvesting the "Aventajada" crop and peaking. There is plenty of fruit in the pipeline. Overall quality is good; fruit is eating and cutting good. We are seeing some Lenticel spotting.  Lenticel develops after harvesting during the rainy season. It does not affect the internal quality of the fruit and becomes less apparent as they ripen.

ALERT!  BROCCOLI
This market continue to be volatile. Cold weather has slowed growth.

CAULIFLOWER
This market is improving; prices will begin to come down.

ALERT!  CELERY
Transition-related light harvests and wet weather has lead to demand exceeding supplies;
pricing is higher than normal. Some seeder has been reported.

GRAPES
Domestic grapes are finishing up; prices are increasing. Imports from Chile should be available around the new year.

ALERT!  LETTUCES
Industry-wide, these markets are extremely volatile. The romaine situation is behind us, but customers are still avoiding romaine, escalating demand on iceberg, green leaf, and tender leaf greens. Harvests are still light in the primary growing region of Yuma, AZ. Pricing is still escalated on both whole and pre-cut product.

ORANGES
California Navels are plentiful; quality is excellent. Cara Caras & Blood Oranges supplies are light, but will improve over the next few weeks.

PEAK SEASON  PEARS
Bartlett, Bosc, and Red Pears are abundant with excellent quality.

ALERT!  PINEAPPLES
Industry-wind, we're anticipating tighter supplies now through January. "Basal Staining" in Costa Rica is significantly affecting supplies from this growing region.  Basal Staining causes a discolored ring around the base of the pineapples causing too much moisture in the soil from previous heavy rains. Shippers have stepped up their selection process for packing to ensure the best quality arrives, this will cause lower volumes moving
forward. (Ecuador and Nicaragua are not experiencing this quality defect, but their production will not be able to fill the supply gap from Costa Rica.)

The timing of this situation, unfortunately coincides with Christmas Demand. Volumes should gradually increase as we move through the first quarter of 2019.

STONE FRUITS
Nectarines, Peaches, and Plums finished domestically. They will not be available until Chilean becomes available around the beginning of January.

ALERT!  STRAWBERRIES
Persistently cold, rainy weather in California and Mexico's growing regions has further slowed harvests and impacted quality. Softness, bruising and white shoulders are all reported. Supplies are extremely limited  and pricing is escalated. We expect this to last through the holidays and improve after the new year. Avoid use. If you have to, order your strawberries conservatively, as the shelf-life is down.

ALERT!  TOMATOES
This market has yet to recover from the aftereffects of severe autumn weather, and recent heavy rains and colder-than-expected temperatures, particularly in Mexico and Florida. Quality is fair and pricing is higher than normal. Romas are the most impacted.
