Farm Notes
Springing into the fields
Many plants have been patiently waiting in the greenhouses, eager to get out into the fields and stretch their roots into the rich soil. This past week we set out the first transplants of lettuce, beets, kale, broccoli, swiss chard, and onions. All these crops will withstand the cold of nights yet to come, but will thrive in the cool sunny days of May. Until now the soils have been too cold and wet to allow the plants to thrive. With this week's showers and sunny warm days, these plants should take off and make up for some lost growing time. This week we will plow more fields and get them ready for the first seedlings of carrots, beans, corn, cucumbers and squash. And then the season will really be upon us.
