2015 Recycling Leadership Awards Presented
 
Congratulations to the winners of this year's Recycling Leadership Awards, presented at the November 2015 Recycling Conference in Cooperstown.  Winners include Susan McIntyre, Recycler of the Year; Andrew Radin, Lifetime Achievement; Modern Recycling Corp., Recycling Leadership, Private Sector; and New York City Material for the Arts, Recycling Leadership Public Sector. 
Results of At-Large, Chapter Elections

Four Schools Receive Green Schools Grant in Fall 2015
Four New York State Schools were awarded up to $500 each in the Fall, 2015 Green School Grants from NYSAR3. Read about the projects funded in this round of awards.
Vitale Named New Division Director of NYS DMM
Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the recent appointment of David Vitale as the new Director of the Division of Materials Management (DMM), effective Dec. 17, 2015.  Mr. Vitale takes over after the recent retirement of Salvatore Ervolina.

Mr. Vitale has been the Director of the Bureau of Permitting and Planning within DMM for the past several years and has been employed at DEC for 36 years, including 26 years in DMM or its predecessor division.  The Commissioner also recognized the outstanding contribution made by Mr. Robert Phaneuf, Assistant Director of the DMM, as the Acting Director during the interim period since Mr. Ervolina retired this last September.
Re-Clothe NY is Awarded $20,000 Grant 
NYSAR3 's EPA award-winning textile recovery campaign "Re-Clothe NY" was recently awarded a $20,000 grant from the Pollution Prevention Institute (P2I).
Madison County Starts Pilot Project Recycling Styrofoam
The Madison County Department of Solid Waste began a pilot project to study the feasibility of recycling Styrofoam. Read about the 6-month program, which began Dec. 29.
Lewis County Expects Clear Bags to Assist Recycling Efforts
Lewis County Solid Waste is implementing a clear bag requirement for all trash generated in the county, effective April 15, 2016. Lewis County is a member of the Development Authority of the North Country Planning Unit. This requirement will assist transfer station workers in their inspections for recyclables in the waste stream and is part of an overall effort to increase recycling rates in the county. In addition, the county recently signed a contract with Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority for the processing of their recyclables. By doing this, Lewis County is moving from a dual sort system to single stream recycling, which is also expected to increase waste diversion.

GLOW 2015 Events
GLOW, a regional solid waste district which serves Genesee, Livingston and Wyoming Counties, had a productive year in 2015 including continuing success with their annual HHW day and passage of their 14th intermunicipal Cooperative Agreement.
Buffalo Clothing Drive
A major clothing collection event with the Western New York Coalition for Donated Goods (WNYCDG) called 'STUFF THE TRUCK' was held in recognition of 'America Recycles Day'.
Monthly SMM Webinar Series
This Sustainable Materials Webinar Series is a live webinar format on the third Tuesday of each month from 1:30pm to 2:45pm EDT. For a list of programs, see the SMM WEBINAR SCHEDULE.  The series is offered through a partnership between the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) and the Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center (RMC).
Zero Waste Conference Planned for June

The National Zero Waste Business Conference, "Tuning in to Zero Waste" will run from June 1-4 in Austin, Texas. Check out some events planned this year.
