Participate and Educate about Democracy:
Supporting democracy in the world at large is one of our principles. How do you as parents involve your children in learning this process? Democracy is not just on polling day. It mostly happens before and after that one day. Children learn by watching. How do they see you participate? Here are a few suggestions for this education in democracy:
  • Discuss the issues with them.

  • Pick an issue, follow it, donate to support it,  put up a lawn or window sign.

  • Let them think about how they would vote.

  • Let them watch you fill out your mail-ballot.

  • Take them to the polling place with you and take them in the booth with you.

  • Review the election results and talk about how various measures passing or not might affect their future.

  • Organize a visit with parents and youth to visit one of your elected officials. It is this relationship that will be powerful when the time comes to give them a call about an important matter.

  • Pick an issue you and your offspring are interested in and follow it through the State or Federal legislative branch. Write a letter about it.
Dia de Los Muertos, October 28th at UUCM: There will again be an ofrenda (alter) to silently place mementos during the ritual of remembrance. This is an All ages service. Children ages six and up are invited to stay in the service. The Nursery -  K1  program will also be happening. Children in that age range have a choice. An activity table will be at the back of the sanctuary making pretty skull masks, and writing love letters to deceased relatives or pets. Parents are invited to join them in these activities at the table or in your seats.

Family Group Sunday, Nov 11th, 1pm to 3pm - Family Bowling in San Rafael at the Country Club Bowl: Parents hanging out, youth gathered together, children and parents actively sharing space and time. We want to know how many lanes to reserve. Please RSVP to:   Grace Dearborn or   Ali Jenkins. Let us know how many in your family intend to bowl and if you want to join in on the pizza purchase. Shoe rental is $4, Lanes are $35/hr. Per person, an hour of bowling will cost about $12, two hours will cost $20. Scholarships available. Also, please let us know how many slices of pizza your family will want.

Our Whole Lives for ages 5-7:
We are needing to postpone our OWL class start-up until next Spring. If your child will be aged 5-7 by February they will be in the age range. We will have another OWL information meeting in January. If you know you want your child in the class you can register with our   Director of Family Ministries, Jeffrey Melcher. Learn more about this curriculum at  https://www.uua.org/re/owl.

We are still looking:
for a couple of experienced teachers to assist in growing our 2-3 grade class. We have parents and children interested - we need teachers to be co-learners with them.

Remarkable People  - October 19
Please save the dates of October 19 and November 16 for the "Remarkable People"   biography program. Facilitated by Nani Ranken, these Friday evenings consist of two UUCM members telling their life story and answering questions. It is spellbinding to hear people talk about the circumstances and choices in their life, and there is no better way to get to know other UUCM folks.

October 19 from 7-8:30pm in the Fireside Room. Amanda Morando and Earl Owen will be the speakers. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on March 23, 1929, Earle received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba. He came to the US and eventually to California, where he taught at the University of California, Davis for most of his working life. He and his wife joined the Unitarian Fellowship and participated in the establishment of the current church. If you want to know more, come to the October Remarkable People session!

Earle will be joined by our beloved choir director Amanda Morando. She teaches and conducts youth choirs, voice and musical theatre throughout the bay area with many organizations. You may have seen her in local musical productions. Learn how she got into music. What a duet of life stories to look forward to!

Missing Hymnals?
"CALLING ALL HYMNALS"

If you have a grey or teal hymnal sitting at home, would you please return it to UUMarin? We are running low on hymnals for Sunday services. Also, Worship Committee urges you to purchase and dedicate a hymnal (we have bookplates to put in the front.) Please complete and submit this form to the office https://uumarin.org/protected/Forms/Hymnal-Dedication.pdf . We also need more of the teal hymnals, so the board is working on finding funding and buying more of these also. Thank you, Julie Prentice, Worship Committee Chair.

Choices 2018
"To make the world more fair and her people one"; one of the hopes and promises of Unitarian Universalism. At this pivotal time in our nations' divided socio-political climate, we desperately need hope.

When we are witness to unfairness and injustice whether it be among our homeless friends, our neighboring immigrant communities or among our African American brothers and sisters, or in the mocking and bullying of a disabled person or a woman who reveals vulnerable and intimate details of violation, do we accept the unacceptable or do we channel the passions that are stirred towards the arc of justice?

Our faith is embedded in democratic principles of freedom and justice for all and as UUA president Susan Frederick-Gray reminds us: "now is no time for a casual faith.".

As Rev. Marcus reminded us on Oct. 7th of our paradise on earth right now, we can call on our generosity of spirit, of loving our neighbors as ourselves and focusing our energies on compassion. We can remind ourselves and others to use our stirred emotions for the cause of love and not hate.

We are called to walk the talk of our UU principles and to stand up for justice, equity and compassion in all our relations. In the coming weeks and months there will be many opportunities to join us in actions like tutoring or feeding an immigrant child or making a salad for a homeless dinner or showing up with a group of us at a rally for climate issues or coming to a Marin County Supervisors' meeting to join in the fight for tenants' protections.

We don't have to do this hard work alone, but we can continue to focus our energies with other UUCM members and other Marin congregations through our alliances in the Marin Interfaith Council (MIC) and the Marin Organizing Committee (MOC).

One of the first opportunities to make a difference is to attend the Congregational meeting on October 21 to vote for our congregation to become a Sanctuary Congregation.
