Choices 2018
"To make the world more fair and her people one"; one of the hopes and promises of Unitarian Universalism. At this pivotal time in our nations' divided socio-political climate, we desperately need hope.
When we are witness to unfairness and injustice whether it be among our homeless friends, our neighboring immigrant communities or among our African American brothers and sisters, or in the mocking and bullying of a disabled person or a woman who reveals vulnerable and intimate details of violation, do we accept the unacceptable or do we channel the passions that are stirred towards the arc of justice?
Our faith is embedded in democratic principles of freedom and justice for all and as UUA president Susan Frederick-Gray reminds us: "now is no time for a casual faith.".
As Rev. Marcus reminded us on Oct. 7th of our paradise on earth right now, we can call on our generosity of spirit, of loving our neighbors as ourselves and focusing our energies on compassion. We can remind ourselves and others to use our stirred emotions for the cause of love and not hate.
We are called to walk the talk of our UU principles and to stand up for justice, equity and compassion in all our relations. In the coming weeks and months there will be many opportunities to join us in actions like tutoring or feeding an immigrant child or making a salad for a homeless dinner or showing up with a group of us at a rally for climate issues or coming to a Marin County Supervisors' meeting to join in the fight for tenants' protections.
We don't have to do this hard work alone, but we can continue to focus our energies with other UUCM members and other Marin congregations through our alliances in the Marin Interfaith Council (MIC) and the Marin Organizing Committee (MOC).
One of the first opportunities to make a difference is to attend the Congregational meeting on October 21 to vote for our congregation to become a Sanctuary Congregation.
