Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Thursday, December 13, 2018

'Tis the Season!

In this final Community Brief of 2018, we close out the 2018-2019 1st semester celebrating several student and staff member success stories. One thing that always seems to jump out in these issues: the amount of time our Pioneers invest in the community helping others. I am so proud of these students and their sponsors donating the time they do whether it be on campus (e.g. the Student Tech Team) or off campus (e.g. N.E.M.P., Tri-M). They are setting a terrific example for other students and adults alike while lending a hand to others.

Tonight we have our first performance of Elf, Jr., the musical at 7:00PM (below). Suitable for the entire family, this production really helps to draw in the spirit of the season!

Thank you for your support during the 1st semester. On behalf of the administration, Happy Holidays and best wishes for a safe and relaxing Winter Break!

With Pioneer Pride,

Ms. Jennifer Bellinger
Principal

Pictured very top: Oak Ridge N.E.M.P. Mentoring students and Walker Middle students
Thanks to the visionary leadership of Principal Watson and the amazing team at Walker Middle School, the "No Excuses Mentoring Program" from Oak Ridge High School started mentoring 40 6th-8th grade male students! These outstanding middle school students, worked with their ORHS mentor to individually reflect on their current grades for the 2nd nine weeks. Together, they discussed a plan of action to raise their GPAs to a 3.0 or higher by the end of the quarter!
Scholarship, leadership, and community service for all mankind!

Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AOHT) NAF students recently volunteered at Clean the World Foundation and are helping to change lives. In the wake of Hurricane Michael, the need for life-saving hygiene supplies is critical. Students separated hygiene products to be recycled (pictured just below) and helped to prepare over 1,000 hygiene kits that will be sent to victims of Hurricane Michael.  Clean the world's volunteers have been working to provide fast emergency relief support for these victims.

Thanks to our Hospitality instructor, Ms. Vanessa Zameza, and to the Oak Ridge NAF students, Clean the World Foundation will be able to distribute over 30,000 kits to the devastated victims.

Computer Science Education Week

Last week was Computer Science Education Week and many of our Pioneers participated in the Hour of Code! The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code," to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a world-wide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.  #thisisoakridge #hourofcode #learningisfun #coding #ocps #computerscience #education @CDLocps
