Rabbi Jonathan Sacks writes: There are moments that change the world: 1439 when Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press (though the Chinese had developed it four centuries before), or 1821 when Faraday invented the electric motor, or 1990 when Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web. There is such a moment in this week's Torah portion, and in its way it may have been no less transformative than any of the above. It happened when Joseph finally revealed his identity to his brothers. While they were silent and in a state of shock, he went on to say these words: "I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God." This is the first recorded moment in history in which one human being forgives another. It is an emotional portion, as brothers reconnect and as a family is reunited. Quite fitting for our service this Friday, as we share in the blessings of Family. Please join Cantor Hochman and me for our Kabbalat Shabbat service beginning at 6:30 pm, as we celebrate two simchas within our congregational community - the naming of Emily Hahn AND the 101st birthday of Joe Singer! Shabbat morning, I will be leading Torah Study beginning at 9:00 am, and Spice Up Your Judaism will follow at 10:30 am led by Scott Kushner. L'shalom, Rabbi Jennifer L. Frenkel
If you wish to have a Mi Shebeirach said during our Shabbat services, please let us know by noon each Friday so we can give the names to the rabbis.
