Diocesan Council Grants for 2019

In 2017, the Diocese of Hawai'i established resources for grants that support the Five Marks of Mission and are in alignment with the vision and goals of The Episcopal Church in Hawai'i. Funding is primarily in support of new projects, although consideration may be given to existing projects that have shown continued growth and impact in their communities.

This Saturday, December 22!

Christmas on the Beach at Camp Mokule'ia

Camp Mokule'ia will be the site of an ecumenical Christmas gathering on Saturday, December 22, 2018, beginning at 9:30 AM. The event brings together a number of different churches and organizations including St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Holy Cross Church, O'ahu Berea Evangelical Church, Marshallese Congregational Church, the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center and many others.

The day will begin with Morning Prayers and Christmas Carols, followed by a camp welcome and tour with Executive Director Darrell Whitaker, who will also share volunteer opportunities. There will be crafts, activities for children and adults, a camp beach hike, family time and of course a potluck lunch! All are invited to attend. For more information and details, contact the Rev. Adult Forum on Prayer with Rev. Dr. Cathy George

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Honolulu will be holding an adult forum on the topic of prayer, with the Rev. Dr. Cathy George, author of You Are Already Praying: Stories of God at Work, which highlights the lives and ministries of lay people. Rev. George is the Associate Dean of Formation at Berkeley Divinity School. All are invited to attend this informal gathering at St. Peter's on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at 9:00 AM. 27th Annual Queen Lili'uokalani Ho'okuikahi

This year's annual Queen Lili'uokalani Ho'okuikahi will be taking place on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at The Cathedral of St. Andrew at 7:00 PM.

The date of the event represents a dark time in Hawaiian history when Queen Lili'uokalani was overthrown, but is now being recognized as a day of reconciliation and hope that focuses on the Queen's courage and conviction for non-violence that has been an example and legacy to her people. The Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center (PJRC) has organized this annual event to "educate and advocate for justice and mercy for Na Kanaka Maoli and all the people of Hawai`i in the spirit of reconciliation."

13th Annual All Angels Jazz Festival

St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Kaua'i will be holding their 13th Annual All Angels Jazz Festival from February 1-3, 2019, featuring popular jazz artists from around Hawai'i and the mainland. The three-day event begins with concerts on Friday and Saturday night, and concludes with their popular free Jazz Masses on Sunday at 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM.

FREE Baby Grand Piano!

Yes, you read it right! This beautiful Young-Chang baby grand piano is looking for a new home. The piano is in good condition and is a model G157 that was purchased in 1995 and has a built-in dehumidifier. The piano belonged to Alan Yonan, Jr.'s late mother, and he would like to donate it to a church, school or other non-profit organization. You may e-mail Alan or call him at (808) 721-7007. The piano is currently located in Hawaii Kai.

Young Adult Service Corp

The Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) is now accepting applications for their 2019 placements. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 11, 2019. YASC is a ministry for Episcopalians ages 21-30 who are interested in exploring their faith in new ways by living and serving in communities around the world. Applicants must have a high degree of maturity and possess a faith commitment, the willingness to be a humble guest, and the ability to be an authentic companion. YASC is the international missionary program of the Episcopal Church and all of the placements are outside of the United States. YASC volunteers are sent out on their own to be part of and work alongside local communities around the Anglican Communion.

Episcopal Service Corps

Young adults (21-32 years old) are invited to apply to serve as a member of the 2019-2020 Episcopal Service Corps.

Episcopal Service Corps is a nationwide network of locally organized and incorporated programs designed to provide young adults with an opportunity to serve others, promote justice, and live simply in intentional communities focused on providing participants tools and resources to deepen their spiritual awareness and discern vocation.

"Episcopal Service Corps offers young adults the opportunity to serve others while at the same time discerning God's call in their own lives," says Wendy Johnson, who coordinates Episcopal Service Corps.

New this year, ESC has created a short, fun quiz to help potential Corps members jumpstart the process of discerning which of the more than 20 ESC programs are the best fit for them. The discernment quiz is HERE .

2019 United Thank Offering Grant Applications Now Being Accepted

Applications are now accepted for the 2018 United Thank Offering grants.

The focus for the 2019 United Thank Offering grants is "Go: Crossing boundaries created by race, culture, and economics to create communities that listen deeply and learn to live like Jesus."

Jesus was always crossing those kinds of boundaries to include the 'other,' and UTO wants to encourage projects that will continue that work of Jesus to heal divisions and grow the beautifully diverse kingdom of God," commented Sherri Dietrich, United Thank Offering Board President.

Known worldwide as UTO, the United Thank Offering grants are awarded for projects that address a new focus area each year, both domestically and internationally in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. The United Thank Offering was founded to support innovative mission and ministry in the Episcopal Church and to promote thankfulness and mission in the whole Church. 100% of thank offerings given to UTO are granted the following year.

Letter to the Episcopal Church from the Presiding Bishop and President of the House of Deputies

Statute of Limitations Suspension for Clergy Sexual Misconduct Begins January 1, 2019

Dear People of God in the Episcopal Church:

Nearly a year ago, we issued a call for the church to examine its history and come to a fuller understanding of how we have handled or mishandled cases of sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse through the years. In particular, we asked to hear voices from the wider church at General Convention so that deputies and bishops might consider both how to atone for the church's past and shape a more just future. As followers of Jesus of Nazareth, as children of God with all people, we could do no less, and we must do more.

In July, General Convention considered 26 resolutions and one memorial addressing issues the #MeToo movement has brought to light, many of them developed by the House of Deputies Special Committee on Sexual Harassment and Exploitation. One of these resolutions, Resolution D034 , suspends for three years the canon (church law) that places a time limit on initiating proceedings in cases of clergy sexual misconduct against adults. There is no time limit on reporting clergy sexual misconduct against children and youth under age 21.

As a result of this resolution, from January 1, 2019 until December 31, 2021, those who wish to bring a case of sexual misconduct against a member of the clergy will be able to do so, regardless of how long ago the alleged misconduct occurred. Allegations of misconduct can be made to the intake officer in the diocese where the alleged misconduct occurred, or, if the allegation is against a bishop, to the Office of Pastoral Development . You can learn how to reach the intake officer in a diocese by checking its website or calling the bishop's office.

We hope that this temporary suspension of the statute of limitations will be one way for the church to come to terms with cases of sexual misconduct in our collective past. Between now and General Convention in 2021, laypeople, clergy and bishops appointed to several task forces created by the 2018 General Convention will be working on other ways of addressing these issues, including a process to help the church engage in truth-telling, confession, and reconciliation regarding our history of gender-based discrimination, harassment and violence.

We are grateful to the many deputies, bishops and other volunteers across the church whose careful work before, during, and after General Convention is helping our church move closer to the day when, having repented of our sins and amended our common life, we may be restored in love, grace and trust with each other through our Savior Jesus Christ.

Diocesan Bible Study to Prepare for the Presiding Bishop's Visit to the Diocese in March 2019

The Most Reverend Michael Curry, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, will be with us in the Diocese of Hawaiʻi on March 22-24, 2019. Please mark your calendars particularly for Friday (March 22), Saturday (March 23) and Sunday (March 24). More information about the visit will be forthcoming. I pray this will be a time of renewal in the Diocese.

To prepare for the Presiding Bishop's visit, I invite all members of the Diocese to prepare for a time of prayer and study of Scripture. I specifically want us to study and pray through the Gospel of Matthew from Monday, October 15, 2018, through Thursday, March 21, 2019. .

Clergy Transitions: The Rev. Irene Tanabe

The Rev. Irene Tanabe, Rector of Church of the Epiphany in Honolulu, has been called to serve as a Missioner from the Diocese of Hawai'i to serve as Rector of All Soul's Anglican Episcopal Church in Okinawa, Japan. In a letter to the congregation, Rev. Tanabe shares how All Soul's was originally founded as a mission to Americans by our own Rt. Rev. Edmund Browning when he was a young priest, and is a church that has a long history with the Diocese of Hawai'i. We wish Rev. Tanabe well and thank her for her faithful service in the Diocese for the past five years.

The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) will be holding a special workshop on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in the Von Holt Room.

Leading this session is Richard Felton, Executive Director for TENS, and the theme is Transforming Generosity. TENS is an association of church leaders who understand, practice and proclaim God's call to generosity. On the TENS website ( https://www.tens.org/ ) their stated purpose is "Helping People Live Generously." Their vision is to provide training and resources for stewardship leaders across the Episcopal Church, around the following core competencies:

This special event is open to all in the Diocese, and those involved or interested in Stewardship are encouraged to attend. The cost is only $15 and includes lunch.

Hawaiian Book of Common Prayer & Gospels

The Office of the Bishop is once again m

aking available two Hawaiian-language books to enhance your worship experience. Both books make exquisite gifts:

Cloth-bound in red with gold foil stamping, the attractive Hawaiian-Language Book of Common Prayer contains over 400 pages of translated biblical scripture, liturgical prayers, and orders service, including King Kamehameha IV's Preface. This limited edition reprint of the prayer book was issued by the Episcopal Church in Hawai'i to celebrate its sesquicentennial that took place in 2012.

Na 'Euanelio Hemolele, is a lectionary-size book containing the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, in the Hawaiian-language, complete with diacritical marks. The book was a project of the Rev. Cn. Malcolm Naea Chun, 20 years in the making, and whose publication was funded by the Diocese's Commission on Native Hawaiian Ministry. The book was originally released in 2003, and is bound in white hard-cover with gold foil stamping.

St. Andrew's Schools Establishes Scholarship for Episcopalians

In the spirit of our common royal and Episcopal heritage, St. Andrew's Schools would like to offer a $1,500 scholarship to The Priory or The Prep, to children of members in good standing of any Episcopal Church in Hawai'i. Members must obtain a reference letter/form with signature from the priest of the church, or if moving to Hawai'i, a letter from the church they left most recently.
