Cold-tolerant berseem clover gives producers frost seeding options
Extended growing seasons, higher yields, increased establishment rates and convenience are just a few of the benefits farmers and ranchers can take advantage of when implementing frost seeding into their hay and pasture systems, according to Jerry Hall, director of research for Grassland Oregon.
"Frost seeding is the broadcasting of seed onto the frozen surface of the soil. Ideally, it is done at a time when there is either no snow or a minimal amount. The freezing and thawing cycle of the soil surface will allow for the seed to work into the top 0.25 in. of soil," Hall explained. "Seeds will then germinate and begin growing as soon as weather conditions become favorable, allowing producers to gain a couple of weeks of growth versus waiting for the soil to firm up enough to drill the seed in."

McDonald's sets new sustainability goal
McDonald's announced Jan. 16 a new set of goals to improve its packaging, which it said will help significantly reduce waste to positively affect the communities the company serves around the world.
By 2025, 100% of McDonald's guest packaging will come from renewable, recycled or certified sources, with a preference for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. Also by 2025, the company has set a goal to recycle guest packaging in 100% of McDonald's restaurants.
"McDonald's understands that recycling infrastructure, regulations and consumer behaviors vary city to city and country to country around the world, but it plans to be part of the solution and help influence powerful change," the company said.

Grant seeks to increase participation of women in ag science
Data from the U.S. Bureau of Statistics and U.S. Department of Agriculture show that while women constitute less than 1% of the nation's agricultural scientists, engineers and policy-makers, they occupy the majority, about 60%, of lower-paid agricultural jobs on America's farms and ranches.
Six female professors at Montana State University and Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) in Montana hope to increase the percentage of female agricultural scientists, engineers and policy-makers by way of a $94,000 USDA National Institute of Food & Agriculture grant, "Empowering Women in Agriculture."
The grant is funded by the USDA National Institute of Food & Agriculture's Women & Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Fields Program, a federal initiative that invests in a diverse, 21st-century agricultural science workforce and aims to increase representation of women and minorities in American agriculture.

Grant to help improve ag use of water, energy
Around the world, irrigated agriculture is the largest consumer of water and one of the largest users of energy.
Michigan State University scientists are leading a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food & Agriculture that will look at ways to better manage these resources and define more sustainable ways for irrigated agriculture to meet current and future demand for food.
"Irrigated agriculture is at the core of the nexus of food, energy and water (FEW) systems," said David Hyndman, Michigan State hydrogeologist and the grant's lead investigator. "Global change is expected to place additional pressure on these systems as U.S. climate warms and becomes more variable, and demand for food increases due to global population growth and diet shifts."

News and Updates for the 2018 Annual Meeting
Make your plans now to be part of the 2018 ADSA Annual Meeting
. The scientific program will feature 1,100 oral and poster presentations from around the globe. Make sure yours is included, as 1,900 scientists from 50 countries meet in Knoxville. Benefit from symposia, workshops, and preconference events presented by the world's leading animal and dairy scientists. Topics include dairy food science, dairy production, animal health and well-being, animal and human nutrition, livestock transport, food safety, and production and management. As always, the success of the ADSA Annual Meeting begins with the quality of the science presented-we look forward to your contributions to this global gathering of animal and dairy scientists. Please visit our
2018 meeting website to find instructions for electronic submission of abstracts (deadline: February 21, 2018, 11:59 p.m. CST).
New for 2018-Platform Sessions.
In a platform session, an invited speaker leads off a themed or topical oral session with a 30- or 45-minute talk, which is then followed by general submission abstract presentations. This type of session can result in higher levels of engagement of oral session submitters/presenters, while disseminating the most current research. Platform sessions provide a third oral session option, somewhere between a symposium and a general oral session. When submitting your abstract(s), be sure to look for platform sessions that may incorporate your research. For 2018, two sections will be accepting abstracts for Platform Sessions. The first is the Small Ruminant section, and the platform session theme is "Addressing management challenges and improving performance in small ruminants." The second is the Animal Health and Well-Being section, with a topic of "Assessment of affective states of dairy cattle."
Remember, the deadline for abstract submission is February 21, 2018, at 11:59 pm (CST).
We look forward to seeing you in Knoxville!

The 34th DISCOVER Conference - Reexamining Amino Acid & Energy Interactions in the Dairy Cow
will be held May 29-June 1, 2018 at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL It will focus on the interactions of amino acids (AA) and energy in lactating dairy cattle. Conference Topics include:
* Pre-Absorptive Interactions - Where Protein & Energy First Interact
* Post-Absorptive Interactions - Where Cows Get Stuff to Make Milk
* Changes in Energy and AA Interactions Over the Lactation Cycle
* Translating Dynamic Elements of Nutrient Metabolism into Feeding Systems
* Research Gaps and Urgent Needs for the Dairy Industry
The 35th DISCOVER Conference
- Effects of Stress on Health and Production in Dairy Cows will be held October 29-November 1, 2018 at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL There is an increasing recognition within the animal and dairy science community of the complex and dynamic response to stress and the role of immune response in animal productivity and well-being. The conference will concentrate on the activators and consequences of immune activation.
