Letter from the President

Dear Friend of The Rep,

As we approach the end of Winter and look forward to Spring, there is much to get excited about here at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre!

We begin the month of March with August Wilson's powerful work, Fences, a Pulitzer Prize winning classic that explores one African American family's hopes and dreams in a rapidly changing 1950s America. The show runs March 1-10 and you won't want to miss it!

The approach of Spring also means that our summer musical is just around the corner. Auditions for the sensational musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will take place this upcoming week on March 4th and 5th. More details are available on the "Auditions" tab of our website.

In terms of classes, things pick up this month for the adults, first with Adult Improv starting back up on March 10th. We are very excited to be offering a Long Form Improv class this time around as well. Additionally, we have an "Introduction to Adult Acting" class starting on March 16th, with a more advanced "Next Steps in Acting" adult acting class on April 27th.

For the young ones, we have auditions this weekend (March 2-3), for our Spring play, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse (ages 7-13). If your child has never been in a show, our spring play is always a great way to get started. With Young Rep Ed, we'll be offering  a 1-day workshop, "Audition Bootcamp: Dancing" (ages 7-17) on March 23rd, followed by an 8-week class session of  "Youth Improv"  for 10-17 year olds from March 30-May 25 .

Last but not least, I'm pleased to say that we will soon be announcing the winners and performance dates of our third annual "Toledo Voices" Staged Reading Series. Expect an update in the coming week!

See you at the theatre.

Christopher A. McAnall
President, Board of Trustees

  • Beginners Improv
Beginners Improv will introduce students to the wonderful unscripted world of playing pretend with other adults. This class will introduce students to the foundations of improv, including the basics of creating that very first scene. Throughout these six weeks, students will learn object work, back-and-forth improv, and the lost art of listening.  The course will introduce students to games and experiences designed to let creativity flow freely and foster a dynamic and collaborative environment.
No experience necessary! Come ready to play!

    Advanced Improv
Advanced Improv will give more experienced students the opportunity to enhance their object work, scene work, and scene creation abilities.
This course will build upon the skills and techniques learned in Beginner's Improv and explore character development. Students will learn how to bring their improv characters to life and experiment with physical comedy.
    Previous improv experience necessary!

  • Long Form Improv
Long Form Improv will give experienced students the opportunity to explore a method of improv where a group of performers take one suggestion and create a theatrical piece inspired by that proposed idea.  Students will build upon the skills and techniques learned in Advanced Improv and what it means to create a piece by ensemble. Warm-Ups, Ice Breaker Games, and the structure of the class will all focus on team work to prepare students for the long haul of Long Form. The most popular and common forms will be studied during this program.
    Previous improv experience necessary!

  • ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR!

  • Paul Fruhwirth

  •
  • Paul was first bitten by the acting bug when he was only two months old. Once he recovered from the infection, he landed his first starring role as Baby Jesus in his neighborhood holiday pageant at only four months old. Later in life, Paul went on to have a love for the theatre, comedy, improv, sketch writing, and stand-up comedy. Beginning in 2012, Paul pursued a formalized education at The Second City Training Center in Old Town, a small neighborhood in the city of Chicago. Paul graduated from The Second City's Improv Program, the sketch comedy program, the stand-up comedy program, as well as the Writing for Late Night TV program.

While Paul's first passion is the stage, he has learned to expand that love into corporate America. In order to pay for his addiction to gummy bears and in-app purchases, Paul spends his days facilitating training sessions, sales presentations and traveling across the country on the speaking circuit.

Paul has appeared at Zany's Chicago, The Laugh Factory Chicago, The Second City Etc. Stage, and his sketches have appeared in The Second City's Skybox Theater. His mother is an Instructor of Performing Arts in Chicago, and specifically asked to be included in his biography. Paul's cat, "Melrose Place" or "Melly" for short, does not find him funny in the least.
