Dear Parents,

The "Riverside Round Up" Fall Fundraiser is tomorrow night - Saturday, October 20th (adults only). We are looking forward to a great evening out with friends to raise money for our Riverside School PTA. So don't forget to buy tickets and check out the silent auction which is live!
 
Also Boo Bash is next week and still in need of volunteers - especially for set up right after school on Friday, October 26th from 3pm-5pm. We still have Riverside School students on the waitlist for the Early Party.  Please see below if you are able to give up a ticket as we want every Riverside School student to be able to attend.

FALL FU NDRAISER THIS SATURDAY!
This year's annual Riverside School Fall Fundraiser, "Riversid e Round Up", is on Saturday, October 20th at the Arch Street Teen Cen ter from 7-10pm. Purchase your tickets now - ticket prices will increase on the day of the event. Our silent auction will be live early next week. There's an opportunity to bid on items or donate even if you can't attend.  For questions about the event, to volunteer or to pay for tickets with a check, please contact [email protected] or al[email protected]
GREEN NEWS
Next Thursday, October 25, between 9 am and 2 pm, we will have a shopping morning at Mike's Organic Warehouse Market. Come and join us and hear owner Mike Geller, tell us about his passion for food and how he carefully select the products for his market. 1 0% of all proceeds will be donated back to the school. Register now!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Halloween Costume Swap this past Tuesday! We hope to make this a yearly event. Reduce, reuse & recycle!
MATH MARATHON
Riverside School will be hosting its annual Math Marathon from Monday, October 22nd to Friday, November 16th. Classes will go head-to-head, with each student completing as many grade-level or above problems on IXL as possible (outside of school time). Students must log in to their school account for problems to count in the class total.

Results will be shown by grade on the bulletin board in the entry foyer and will be updated each Monday until we announce the winner.

Students received their iXL login information from their classroom teachers.  If parents are unfamiliar with iXL or if a student is not sure of their log in, please reach out to your student's teacher.  

The winning class will get to "run" around during their own extra recess as well as other surprises.So get ready to divide (or add, subtract or multiply) and conquer math!

BOO BASH - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
halloween Boo Bash is one week away and we are excited to show the children a fun, festive and frightful night! �� ��
We are still in need of volunteers for the EARLY PARTY and help with SET UP BEFORE THE EVENT between 3-5pm. We can use all the help we can get! Especially husbands to help hang items.  SIGN UP TO BE A VOLUNTEER .

We are still working on getting everyone tickets for the early party, so if you have any ability to give back a ticket, either by leaving a younger sibling at home or having friends go together with just one parent, that would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Jennie Stehli ([email protected])  if you can assist us. Our goal is to get every Riverside School student a ticket to attend and off the waitlist. Thank you for your assistance and patience with this. 
BOO BASH 5th GRADE BAKE SALE!
Please support the 5th grade BAKE SALE - you can wow the students with your creative treats or buy delicious cookies/cupcakes at the store, please just make sure they are nut free. These funds go directly to supporting the 5th grade initiatives. Sign up at  WWW.RIVPTA.ORG
DONATE UNWANTED HALLOWEEN CANDY!!!
The Wellness Committee will be collecting any unwanted Halloween candy during the two days following Halloween.  All types of wrapped candy are acceptable. No loose or unwrapped candy. Please leave your donations in the marked  orange   collection box by the school office Thursday, November 1st and Friday, November 2nd.
 
Local pediatric dentist, Dr. Stacy Zarakiotis, will take in our candy and make a matching donation to support children in need of corrective dental surgeries via Operation Smile.  Thank you in advance for supporting this good cause

CALLING ALL VETERANS!
Please join us for the 14th Annual Riverside School Veteran's Day Ceremony on Friday, November 9th at 9:00 am in the Gym where we will honor those who have served in the US Armed Forces. This year we will recognize the family members of our Riverside School community in a slideshow. 

Please email  riversideschoolfamily@gmail.com  with the names of relatives who have served, their branch and/or rank and the student/s or teacher related to them. We will accept responses until November 2nd.  If you know a veteran who will join us that day, please email  [email protected]  so we can properly recognize and thank them at the ceremony.  
FAMILY FUN DAY AT THE BRIDGEPORT SOUND TIGERS 
Come out with Riverside School on Sunday  November 11th when the Bridgeport Sound Tigers take on the Charlotte Checkers at 3:00 pm. The Riverside Chorus will be performing God Bless America at this game on Veteran's Day in the 1st intermission!

All tickets sales are online this year and you can get them today!  Purchase your tickets.

RIVERSIDE SCHOOL BOOK FAIR IS COMING!
Save the date for this year's Riverside School Book Fair "NEVERLAND OF BOOKS" on Wednesday, November 14th and Thursday, November 15th from 9:00am - 4:00pm.
 
Some Book Fair Highlights:
  • Ice Cream Social: November 14th from 5:30 - 7:00pm.
  • Raffle: There will be a drawing for each grade at 6:30pm during the ice cream social. One boy and one girl from each grade will win one of "Mrs. Browning's Best" selections from the Book Fair! AND there will also be sibling and parent drawings for Book Fair Bucks! Don't miss this fun event!

ARTS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM - 3RD GRADERS
Carol Glynn from the Connecticut Storytellng Center "Celebrated the Constitution" with the third graders on Monday. Students learned about the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and the Legend of the Charter Oak. Third graders acted out the key figures involved in the founding of our country and learned about the three branches of government. Students were given an overview of our state and local government and the candidates for the upcoming election. This experiential learning opportunity and lively performance is a PTA sponsored enrichment program.
SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM - 1ST GRADERS
This week, the first grade classes had their first High Touch-High Tech program, "Force of Habit".   They pushed and pulled their way through natural forces of gravity, friction, and magnetism. They had a chance to feel how these things help to stop, start, and accelerate everything around us.  This is a PTA sponsored enrichment program.

CARE FOR SELF AND OTHERS - OCTOBER 24TH - WEAR RED!
On  Wednesday, October 24th ,  GPS and Riverside School will be celebrating the  CARE FOR SELF AND OTHERS - I Am Here To Save The Day!  event.  
This is a common initiative across grade levels to promote self-advocacy, empathy and compassion.
Students will take this opportunity to: Red Shirt
 - Learn how to advocate for themselves and help others.

 - Learn how to identify a need and offer help when needed.


 All students, teachers and staff members are encouraged to wear RED.

 

Follow-up questions are provided below to encourage parents/guardians to discuss the event with their children at home.

Questions for caregivers:
       Who is your buddy?  What did you do to help your buddy today?        How did you use your "super power" to help someone today?
Activities:
       Foster emotional literacy by promoting face-to-face communication in the age of texting and smartphones.
       Practice emotional literacy by asking your child, 'Do you see the woman over there? Does she look happy or does she look sad?'" "How can you tell?"
       Help your child use their "super power" by finding a need and being helpful at home.

PTAC SCHOOL IMPOROVEMENT PLAN - OCTOBER MEETING
All GPS parents are welcome to join the October SIP Workshop on  Tuesday, October 23rd from 10-12pm in the Havemeyer Building (290 Greenwich Ave.)
The topics covered will include:
1.  ECRISS - Jen Lay, the GPS Research Manager will explain ECRISS and it's uses.  In short, ECRISS is a centralized database of student performance where teachers can compile student data and then assess it to measure performance levels of students, classrooms, grades and schools and much more.  This is a link to ECRA's website for further information   https://ecragroup.com/analytics/
2.  2017-2018 Achievement Report - Every fall, the school district presents an Achievement Report to the BOE.  The report includes standardized test scores for every school in the district.  
KINDERGARTEN 2019-2020 - SAVE THE DATE!
Are you considering your Kindergarten options for school year 2019-2020?  SAVE-THE-DATE for Greenwich Public Schools  Kindergarten Spotlight  on November 13, 2018, 6:00 p.m. at the Town Hall Meeting Room to learn more about the GPS Kindergarten program.
