The Campbell Foundation Awards $75,000 to University of Texas Researcher
Dr. Utay
The Campbell Foundation, based in Ft. Lauderdale, has awarded a $75,000 grant to Dr. Netanya Utay, an assistant professor in the department of Internal Medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, to study the role lymph node fibrosis may play in HIV eradication. Research has shown that people with more scarring have less improvement in T-cells on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Dr. Utay and her team have been testing telmisartan, a drug that can decrease, or even prevent fibrosis in other conditions. She found that although telmisartan had no effect, lymph node fibrosis decreased in some patients but not in others with antiretroviral drugs alone. Now, she plans to take her research a step further by using two other key drivers of fibrosis: Interleukin 13 (IL-13), which activates cells involved in tissue repair and contributes to fibrosis in other diseases, and Interleukin 33 (IL-33), which stimulates other cells as well as IL-13 production. The goal of this grant is to determine the contribution of the IL-13 and IL-33 pathways of fibrosis and different cell types to changes in lymph node fibrosis.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Opens $232 Million Hospital Tower and  Expanded Emergency Services Department in Weston
Cleveland Clinic Florida's newly constructed hospital tower and expanded Emergency Services Department opened to patients on Saturday, Oct. 6. The $232 million five-story, 221,000-square-foot addition to the Weston campus expands capacity by 50 percent. Located on the first floor of the newly constructed tower, the expanded Emergency Services Department consists of 42 emergency bays designed to accommodate more than 70,000 patients a year. Several patient care design elements were incorporated to support patient safety, comfort and experience.

The recently completed expansion includes a new hospital tower with a 24-bed surgical intensive care unit (ICU) on the second floor and 26 medical/surgical and telemetry beds for oncology and acute care patients on the third floor. The fourth floor of the tower, with 24 medical ICU beds, is scheduled to open by the end of the year. The fifth floor will be brought online when demand requires additional capacity.

The new hospital tower and expanded Emergency Services Department are part of a major expansion announced in 2015 and fueled by $302 million in capital investments. Other capital projects launched this year include the establishment of a medical office in Wellington and the opening of the 73,000-square-foot Coral Springs Family Health Center.
