National Merit Program
Lancers earn prestigious academic recognition.
Congratulations to 10 Lake Park students who have earned academic recognition through the 64th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
Semifinalists: Seniors Kevin Antony and Andelyn Granskog have been selected as Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They were selected based on test scores of the 2017 PSAT/NMSQT and represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards worth $31 million.
Commended Students: Seniors Ahmed Burki, Alexandra Capps, Alex Huang, Maxwell Kaiser, Narek Ohanyan, Nicole Orue, Mason Shen and Jacob Sprandel have been selected among 34,000 Commended Students nationwide who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for Merit Scholarship Awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million juniors who entered the 2019 competition and may become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
National Hispanic Recognition:
Nicole Orue has been selected as a 2019
National Hispanic Recognition Program award recipient. The College Board's
National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the NHRP honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT.

State Spirit March and Sendoff
First IHSA State sendoff this school year celebrates girls tennis and boys golf.
Celebrating the first State Spirit March and Sendoff of the school year this week were members of the Lancer Girls Tennis team and
Boys Varsity Golfers.
Congratulations to the Lancer Girls Tennis team for winning their second consecutive IHSA 2A Sectional Championship title and competing in IHSA State competition this weekend. Two-time State qualifier A
nalisa Cruz (10) had a successful opening day on Thursday with two wins advancing her along with the top 32 singles competitors in Class 2A.
The girls tennis program is led by Head Coach Ben Hussey and
Assistant Coaches
Christian Pawlak and Craig Cichowicz.
Congratulations to Lancer golfer Jordan Fischer (12) who hit the links in the IHSA State tournament last weekend in Bloomington. He's now a two-time State qualifier participating last year in the team competition and this year as an individual. Senior teammate Zac Place (right) also enjoyed a successful season earning titles including DuKane Champion and DuKane co-golfer of the year as well as all conference honors.
The boys golf program is led by Head Coach Dan Batka and Assistant Coach Tim Moran.

Honor Roll Students Named
Lancers recognized for academic excellence last semester.
Lake Park High School is pleased to recognize students for achieving
Honor
Roll
distinction during the second semester of the 2017-18 school year.
Congratulations to the list of students who qualified based on their grade point average calculated from the prior semester and the following criteria: Honor Roll (4.00-4.37), High Honor Roll (4.38-4.74) or Highest Honor Roll (4.75 & Above).
Families have the option to request a printed Honor Roll certificate
by Friday, November 2. To request a certificate, complete the online form that will require you to submit your student's name, ID# and campus.
Students will be notified at school when the certificate is available for pick up from
Mrs. Stratton at East Campus and
Mrs. O'Neil at West Campus.

Lake Park Seeks Input on Communication Effectiveness
Please complete the District survey by November 5 to provide important feedback.
Lake Park High School has joined with SCoPE School Surveys to gain input on the district's communication efforts. School Communications Performance Evaluation (SCoPE) Surveys seek feedback from
parents,
staff, and
community members about how they receive information and whether they consider the
communication to be effective.
SCoPE Surveys will help take the guesswork out of communications.
Through the surveys, Lake Park will learn whether people prefer receiving an email, seeing a post on social media, or reading about something in the local paper. The data will also help the District determine if it is
providing enough information about key topics and issues.
SCoPE Surveys are conducted online in a secure portal and take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Questions revolve primarily around the district's communication mechanisms, the effectiveness of
communications in key areas of importance to each audience, and whether communication is considered to be accurate, timely and trustworthy. Participants can access the surveys on desktop and laptop computers as well
as most tablets and smart phones. Surveys are available in English, Spanish and Polish; participation is completely anonymous.
Lake Park's SCoPE Surveys
open today and stakeholders will have until
Monday, November 5 to participate. Because the reliability of the results increases with the percentage of people taking the surveys,
participation is significant. Please take the time to provide this extremely important feedback.

Introducing Lake Park's College and Career Counselor
Joe Ziemba is excited about the new opportunity to service Lancer students and families.
College and Career Counselor Joe Ziemba is in his fifth year as a Lake Park counselor and has worked at both campuses serving students in grades 9-12.
In this new position, which was created as part of the Pupil Personnel Services Department restructuring, his duties include overseeing college and career programming at both campuses, serving as a college and career liaison for the Lake Park community, and, most importantly, being available to meet with Lancer students and families to serve as a key resource for their college and career planning needs.
He has office hours at each campus every week and is available to assist all Lake Park students and families with questions about the college and career search processes, questions about completing college application items (e.g., how to send a transcript), planning resources, and more. A student's assigned
grade level counselor
is also available to assist with questions about the college and career search processes and items that require counselor action (e.g., counselor forms for college applications, letters of recommendation).
During the fall college application season, Joe
will be available on select days for evening appointments at West Campus. Parent(s)/guardian(s) must attend these meetings with their student. To schedule an evening appointment, contact

One area that Joe would like to expand upon is campus visits by various professionals who are willing to discuss their career paths and industries with students who are interested in a related field. School Accountability Designations
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) indicators to evaluate schools statewide.
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is poised to release its new school accountability system. Lake Park will fall into one of these four performance categories: Tier 1: Exemplary School, Tier 2: Commendable School, Tier 3: Underperforming School, and Tier 4: Lowest-Performing School.

The factors that contribute to a school's performance rating include
academic indicators
(SAT scores, graduation rate, and English learner proficiency); as well as
student success indicators
(chronic absenteeism, 9th grade on track, college and career readiness, and climate survey).

For high schools, the particular measures and performance standards continue to be developed. Science achievement, fine arts, and student growth will be added in the coming years. Additionally, it is widely understood that graduation rate is a placeholder indicator for student growth on the College Board assessments. College and career readiness indicators are under development as well.
At the end of October with the release of the School Report Card, Lake Park anticipates hearing from ISBE about the District's tier designation. Families and community members will receive updates with this important information about student performance.

Halloween Carnival and Haunted House
Thespians stage a frightfully fun event for the entire family on October 26.
The Lake Park Thespians will present their first ever "Halloween Carnival" on Friday, October 26 in the East Campus Dice Auditorium.
Children ages 2 to 12 are invited to attend from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. when the carnival features games, face painting, crafts, treats and prizes! Admission is $5 per child and adults are free.
Guests over 12 are invited from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Night of Fine Dining and Theatre
Tickets are now on sale for the Educational Foundation's annual fundraiser.
On
Friday, December 14, the Lake Park Educational Foundation will host an exciting evening of fine dining and theatre at Lake Park's East Campus.
Guests will enjoy an elegant 4-course holiday dinner prepared by Lake Park culinary students and reserved seating for the holiday play,
Almost, Maine. Guests can also bid on a wide array of silent auction items throughout the dinner. Tickets are $35 per person and include dinner and the play.
