Industry News
"'Fly-em till they drop' has been the rule in the past few years as traffic growth and moderate oil prices have kept older jets in fleets and disassemblies averaging 400-500 a year at the most. But sooner or later--as fuel costs rise, traffic slows or aircraft just age out--old birds will head for teardown shops at a more normal pace of 900-plus annually."

"Boeing and ELG Carbon Fibre announced a partnership to recycle excess aerospace-grade composite material, which will be used by other companies to make products such as electronic accessories and automotive equipment."

"Last week, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced that they'd conducted a successful flight test of an aircraft with a sci-fi-sounding propulsion system called an ion drive, an achievement that's earned comparisons to the Wright brothers' breakthrough at Kitty Hawk."

Association Update
From Derk-Jan van Heerden, AFRA President
Dear AFRA Members,

2018 has been a year of substantial outreach and increased visibility for the aircraft end-of-service management  industry. We look forward to increasing the brand awareness of AFRA and its member in 2019 while increasing internal member participation and external communications. Here's a snapshot of some of our most important achievements and ongoing programs this past year.

  • Providing a Forum for Member Engagement through the continued work of four Association committees: BMP Development, Communications, Government Affairs, and R&D.
  • Establishing AFRA as an Industry Voice, in collaborating with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
  • Maintaining and Improving upon its BMP Accreditation Program to improve the management of end-of-service aircraft in terms of environmental and sustainable performance, while working to finalize BMP version 4.0.
  • Enhancing AFRA's Online Presence through the Association's website, social media pages, contribution to industry publications, and monthly newsletter campaign.
  • Representing AFRA Members at key Industry Events by its emphasis on networking and member engagement at events such as the AFRA Annual Meeting, MRO Americas and MRO Europe, ISTAT Americas and ISTAT EMEA, and ATAG.
  • Continuing Emphasis on Inclusion and Collaboration with new members, including 9 new member companies in 2018, and initiating a research project through our R&D Research Network Partners.
I'm excited about what's ahead for AFRA and encourage you to remain involved with the Association as we continue these and other important initiatives. In 2019 a new annual report of our industry will see the daylight. We will need your help to collect the data but it will bring you good business insights on how our market is developing.

We hope to see you at the 2019 Annual Meeting and we're looking forward to another productive and successful year for AFRA!

Best regards,

Derk-Jan van Heerden
Aircraft End-of-Life Solutions (AELS) B.V.

IATA BIPAD Manual

Best Industry Practices for Aircraft Decommissioning
IATA has developed a Best Industry Practices for Aircraft Decommissioning (BIPAD) manual, which aims at providing guidelines for airlines and other aircraft owners and operators to manage aircraft decommissioning in a controlled process, while considering environmental, safety and economic aspects.

The BIPAD manual has been established in a multi-stakeholder group composed of relevant industry stakeholders, namely airlines, aircraft maintenance organizations, leasing companies, aircraft and engine manufacturers, parts traders, disassembling, dismantling and recycling companies and the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA). The manual covers all phases of the aircraft end-of-life process, from the decision to take an aircraft out of service to the final dismantling, recycling and reuse of parts and considers economic and operational, regulatory and legal, safety and environmental aspects.

To download the BIPAD manual, please click here.

Brexit Update

AFRA Staff is monitoring the impact Brexit may have on the industry and will provide updates for members as the discussions continue. If you are interested in learning more, please see below for links to relevant articles.

On 13 November 2018 the European Commission and the United Kingdom's (UK) negotiators reached an agreement on all provisions of the   Withdrawal Agreement   establishing the terms of withdrawal of the UK  from the European Union (EU). The withdrawal agreement is designed to provide legal certainty once the EU Treaties and EU law will cease to apply to the UK as of 29 March 2019. The Withdrawal Agreement sets a transition period lasting until 31 December 2020, during which the EU will treat the UK as if it were a Member State (with the exception of participation in the EU institutions and governance structure). The transition period may be extended once. The European Council endorsed on 25 November 2018 the Withdrawal agreement as negotiated by the European Commission and UK representatives. EU legislators are now taking the necessary steps to make sure that the agreement can enter into force on 30 March 2019.  This factsheet   provides detailed information on the areas covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. A  timeline of the process   is available on the European Council website.
