Volunteering
Great for Others & Great for You
There’s a growing body of evidence that helping others can also improve your health. It seems that we are wired to need a connection with others, and that giving back is a great way to feel that bond. According to a recent study, providing care to others even confers a longevity benefit to the provider. This is great news for the hundreds of volunteers who help ensure the Free Clinic is here to deliver compassionate, high quality care for our community, every day. There is a definite camaraderie among the volunteers at each clinic, whether they are assisting with patient check-in, helping room patients and completing charts, or checking vital signs. Some volunteers do not work directly with patients, but contribute by helping with information systems, business processes, fundraising and in many other important ways. Other volunteers are able to help by contributing their financial resources to the Free Clinic. However we volunteer, we are all part of a special community, helping others.
Restoring People's Hearts
For medical assistant volunteer, Christine Neill, the ability to help others at the Free Clinic not only fuels and guides her toward a greater cause for her own life, but she loves working with other medical professionals to restore a quality of life for people.
Creating & Sustaining Relationships-One Volunteer at a Time
Catherine (Cat) Bean is all about creating and sustaining relationships. As volunteer coordinator at the Free Clinic, she is not only responsible for managing the 600+ volunteer database, but she works closely with the over 300 people who regularly volunteer at the Free Clinic. “It is great working with people who want to volunteer their time to help others,” explained Cat. “They truly are making a difference in people’s lives.”
Meet Dr. Remy Eussen!
“I want to sleep good at night” is a phrase dentist Dr. Remy Eussen often says and firmly believes. A dental volunteer at the Free Clinic for the last four years, Remy says he has been very blessed in his own life and sees others who are not as fortunate. “By volunteering at the Free Clinic, I hope I am helping, in my small little way, to improve people’s lives.”
Keeping Us Connected
For the last 12 years, Brian Ridderbush has generously been volunteering his time to keep the Free Clinic technologically connected. Initially, the Free Clinic had no budget to bring the organization up to speed with computer technology and connection to the outside world. Writing a grant request to a local foundation, Brian was able to obtain the funds to create a technology plan, obtain the infrastructure, and equip all staff at the Free Clinic with workstations, email, internet, and the like.
Bringing Nutrition Education To Our Local Community
Having an interest in developing a better, healthier, and stronger local community is not only a passion of the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington, but it is near and dear to the heart of nutrition educator Yolanda Garcia. “Nutrition is a plus and bringing nutrition education to our community is a necessity,” says Yolanda, who volunteers her time at the Free Clinic teaching the WSU Extension Expanded Food & Nutrition Program (EFNEP) to low income families.
