October 21, 2018

Rev. Kate Mackereth Fulton, preaching
Job 23:1-9, 16-17 (New International Version)

1Then Job replied:
2"Even today my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy in spite of my groaning. 3If only I knew where to find him; if only I could go to his dwelling! 4I would state my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments. 5I would find out what he would answer me, and consider what he would say to me. 6Would he vigorously oppose me? No, he would not press charges against me. 7There the upright can establish their innocence before him, and there I would be delivered forever from my judge.
8 "But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him. 9When he is at work in the north, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.
16"God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me. 17Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face."
Hebrews 4:12-16 (New International Version)

12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Dear friends:

Greetings from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Susie and I left town shortly after worship last Sunday to spend a week here in Kill Devil Hills. We arrived just as the sun was going down, the light of the Lord's Day giving way to the bright constellations of the Creator's night sky.

October is not usually a popular month for sunbathing, but the blessing of this journey is less about the beach and more about the relaxed rhythm of each day. Sunrise finds me on the deck, unhurriedly gazing eastward in a prayerful spirit of gratitude toward the God who paints the dawn differently each morning.

It hasn't been all about the deck time, though. One day we played golf. I was in a fine rhythm then, too, notching a victory on the links by sinking a final putt. My triumph was a bit hollow, though. My fellow competitor discovered she had left her purse back at the beach house and was unable to pay for the agreed upon wager of a post-round refreshment. Somehow I still had to pay for lunch.

Yesterday we drove an hour south to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Since it was the off-season we couldn't climb to the top. We masked our disappointment with a long walk on a beach that featured more scuttling sand crabs than people. We also bought a jigsaw puzzle of the lighthouse so that we could take that iconic beacon with us wherever we go.

Assuming we finish that puzzle in the next two days, we'll leave these shores on Saturday and head toward the familiar rhythms of home. I'll see you soon after dawn this Sunday at St. Paul's, friends, as we thank our Lord for the beauty of the light.

Peace,

A.B. Snell

John & Kelly Petch welcomed new baby William Peter on October 2. All are invited to share the love of St. Paul's by providing a meal for the family now through November 16. Third graders are especially encouraged to attend - it will help them understand how to read the Bibles they received recently! While the class is primarily designed for students in grades 3-5, all ages are welcome, including parents and siblings. A light lunch will be provided and nursery care will be available upon request. During this weekly time of food, film, and fellowship participants enjoy a light lunch while watching and discussing a short faith-provoking film clip. Our selection today features the work of New York Times bestselling author and Christian teacher Rob Bell in "Flame: What's up with the word love?" On October 28, we will be watching Brené Brown in "The Reckoning, The Rumble, and The Revolution," offering a road map for how to get back up when we fall. Come as you are able!
Adult Sunday School

Adult Sunday School, led by Vern Schinski, is held on Sunday mornings, 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Parlor. Each week will have a different focus or form of moving closer to the divine.
Justice and Compassion

Everyone is welcome at Justice & Compassion! Our next meeting is Wednesday October 24, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Parlor. This group provides opportunities for St. Paul's members and friends to take action to create a more just and compassionate church, community, and world, from short term projects and Beloved Community efforts to the ongoing work of the Hunger Ministry. Come join us.
Church Conference

The 2018 Church Conference will be held at 7:00 p.m. on October 24 at Concord-St. Andrew's UMC (5910 Goldsboro Rd, Bethesda MD 20817). At the direction of the bishop all churches will hold Church Conferences this year, meaning that all full members of St. Paul's in attendance will have voice and vote. (Note that this is not the Church Conference required for final approval of any building renovation plans; that Church Conference will be scheduled for a later date.)
Trunk or Treat

On Sunday, October 28, St. Paul's will be holding its first Trunk-or-Treat starting at 5:00 p.m. in the church parking lot. A Trunk-or-Treat event allows families from across the community to come to the parking lot, show off Halloween costumes, and fill their bags with candy in a safe and supervised environment. If you would like to decorate your "trunk" for this event, please go to goo.gl/V8WEf4 to register your car. For more information, please contact staff members Micah Smartt or Meg Baker. Donation bins for those who wish to drop off candy will be placed around the church.

All are welcome at the community Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the UMM, Saturday November 3. Serving hours are 8:00-10:30 a.m. and we offer pancakes, eggs, sausage, ham, fruit, and other dishes. The November breakfast will benefit scholarships at Wesley Theological Seminary, where our pastors studied! Please join us, and consider volunteering as a way to have some fun and support this and other worthy causes.
Craft Fair

The St. Paul's annual craft fair will begin Saturday, November 3, during Pancake Breakfast and continues in the Narthex on November 4 & 11. All crafters are invited to donate items in October. All types of crafts are gratefully accepted, and past sales have included needle work, quilted or knit items, photos, greeting cards, paintings, pottery, decorations, jewelry, preserves, books, etc. All proceeds from Craft Fair sales are donated to worthy causes that help those in need. Practices will be held on Sundays from 11:45 a.m. -1:00 p.m. beginning November 4, with a dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 15 (time TBD). A snack will be provided at each rehearsal. If you are planning to participate but can't attend on November 4, contact Ashley Derr at [email protected]. We hope you will join us!
UMW Book Club

The UMW Book Club for all women meets about every other month. Our next meeting is in Room 109 on November 11 following the 10:30 am worship service. We will be discussing Uprising by Sally Armstrong, an award-winning humanitarian and journalist. From Africa to Asia to the Americas, women are the key to progress on ending poverty, violence, and conflict.  Uprising tells dramatic and empowering stories of change-makers, from Nobel Prize winners to little girls, and examines the stunning courage, tenacity, and wit they are using to alter the status quo whether they come from mud-brick houses in Afghanistan, the forests of Congo, or university campuses.
2x4s Book Club

"And the Lord said, 'What have you done?  Listen; your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground!'" The words of Genesis 4:10 will ring in our ears as we read Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. This history of several Osage Native American people murdered in the 1920s intrigues and convicts. Start reading now, then join us November 12 at the King home, 7:30-9:00 p.m. If you can't make it in November, get a head start on our next title, Educated by Tara Westover for discussion on December 10.  Contact Rachel King at [email protected] for more details.
2x4s Luncheon

Save the date! On November 18, 2x4s will celebrate an early Thanksgiving with a potluck hosted by the Lipford family after the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Sign up details to come!
UMCOR Hurricane Response

The United Methodist Committee on Relief is already at work in the US, assisting those affected this hurricane season. You can help support the work of UMCOR's early response teams, disaster coordinators, and local churches. Checks should be made payable to St. Paul's UMC with "UMCOR Hurricane" on the memo line. To read more about UMCOR, visit https://tinyurl.com/ycgfn3kz for Current Disaster Response news.
Building Renovation Update

The Building Committee would like to thank everyone for their patience while we navigate the labyrinth of red tape and building codes during the permitting process for our building renovation. Our engineers are finalizing the last details necessary prior to issuance of the building permit and site work approvals. We are also very pleased to announce that we have contracted with Scott-Long Construction, a general contracting firm, to provide us with "preconstruction services" and move us toward a construction bid that we can bring before the congregation for approval. Thank you again for your patience!
Liturgists & Communion Stewards

If you would like to assist with the worship service, we are seeking Liturgists (to read the scripture) and Communion Stewards (to help serve communion) for the service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. To sign up online, simply add your name and email address to the sign-up sheet found here: goo.gl/Xz5T79. Please contact the church office if you have any questions.
Online Prayer Requests

Upcoming surgery? Have a joy or concern? In need of prayer support? Submit a prayer request online, day or night. You have the option to share your request with the Prayer Lift team or only share directly with the pastors. Visit our online prayer request form linked on our website at:  http://stpaulsk.org/community/prayer-requests.
