The fall semester got off to an action-packed start with Welcome Week activities, Fresh Check Day, thought-provoking forums, professional development day, and more.
As we are drawn into the demands of the semester, I urge you to take the time to enjoy the changing landscape outside. Below is an excerpt and link to a poem that evokes fall for me:

 Students welcomed back with a week of fun
Welcome Week activities began on Tuesday, September 5 when students enjoyed an obstacle course, dunking booths and Italian ice at the Welcome Week Kick Off. On Wednesday, they were introduced to
Three Rivers Clubs and enjoyed
ice cream at Get the Scoop. On
Thursday, everyone got a free lunch at the Meet and Mingle BBQ where students, faculty and staff all had the chance to chat. Finally, on Friday, the whole fami
ly was welcomed to TRCC Family Night activities and to watch the movie, "Wonder Woman," on the green.

 Fresh Check Day was a blast!
The MPR was packed with students on Septmber 20 for Fresh Check Day.
The festive fall fair combined free food, games and hands-on activities with learning about mental health resources. Students were treated to lunch by Spuds and North End Deli, played games, and learned about mental health at interactive booths hosted by different student clubs.

Lively discussion and news coverage generated by Forum: Is Hatred and Violence the New Norm in American Society?
On September 26 and 27,
Student Diversity and Title IX Coordinator Edward Derr moderated a two-part forum that addressed
the issues of hate and violence in America today. The panel examined the protests at Charlottesville, anti-Semitism, and the threats against the LGBTQ and immigrant communities as well as the recent peaceful protects of football players.
The forum prompted an editorial by the Norwich Bulletin.

Professional Development Day focused on Strategic Plan
The Strategic Plan was the main subject of the Professional Development Day on Friday, September 22. Faculty and staff broke up into groups to discuss and propose metrics for the core themes of Student Success, Image, Stewardship, and Partnerships. Kem Barfield will be emailing out a link to the video recording of the day.

CSCU President Ojakian releases important messages on the State Budget and DACA
When faced with a budget that would cut $93 million dollars from the CSCU system, Ojakian urged students to
advocate to our state legislators and tell them how damaging these cuts would be to our system. Read his letter in full here.

Nuclear students attend the Health Physics Society meeting
Professor Jim Sherrard took a large group of nuclear engineering students to the fall meeting of the New England Chapter of the Health Physics Society to hear a presentation by Dr. Nolan Hertel, the president elect of the Health Physics Society.
This photo includes current nuclear engineering students, plus other Three Rivers program graduates who have continued their education at UMASS-Lowell in health physics and are now working in the field.

 Elaine Topalis retires after 37 years
Friends and colleagues gathered to wish Elaine a fond farewell after her 37 years at Three Rivers. Acting Dean of Student Services Steve Finton read aloud a letter that detailed her work supporting the Academic Division, Student Development, the Welcome Center and finally, the Financial Aid Department.
She was
complemented
for her exceptional work, knowledge and kindness, and will be sorely missed. The ceremony included gifts, a pinning and a reception in student services.

The Three Rivers College Foundation's 2017-2018 Annual Appeal is underway! We know that, in your lives, you have many priorities. Congratulations to
Rebecca M. Cipriani, a second year nuclear engineering student with a full Millstone scholarship, who will graduate in May 2018. She was awarded the American Nuclear Society's Community College Scholarship Award for this current academic year.
