VPEngagementMessage from the VP Member Engagement

Lakiesa Rawlinson
Happy March, Student Affairs Colleagues! With spring semester in full swing, I hope everyone is in good spirits and engaging students across their campuses.

In February, the Executive Council met for our Mid-Year Retreat to discuss annual goals, budget, and other topics relevant to SACSA. We were productive and even had a chance to participate in a team-bonding exercise at the Raleigh Escape Room. While this exercise allowed the Executive Council to learn more about their colleagues' strengths and talents, the activity definitely brought out our competiveness. Furthermore, we were able to engage with each other outside the confines of the Mid-Year Retreat meeting room; the Executive Council left this experience feeling excited and energized about the work we will do for SACSA.

This team-building experience led me to reflect on ways in which I could engage the members of SACSA and empower them to serve the organization. Our members are the heart of the SACSA, and our success is contingent upon your involvement. In the spirit of membership engagement and retention, here a few tips on how to make the most of your SACSA membership:
  1. Reflect on your interests, areas of growth, and personal goals and find a SACSA committee that best suits your needs. Engage actively with the organization to build your SACSA resume experience.
  2. Recruit others to engage with the organization and maintain membership. SACSA greatly depends on its members to move the organization forward.
  3. Don't be a Hotel Room, Conference Session, Hotel Room Attendee (HCH Attendee)! You will benefit the most from your SACSA membership by engaging and networking with others.
I hope you all have a great semester and continue doing great work on your campuses.

Yours in SACSA,

Lakiesa Rawlinson, Ph.D.
Vice-President of Member Engagement

Aaron Hughey
SACSA Member since 2000
As a faculty member since 1991, Dr. Aaron W. Hughey encourages his graduate students at Western Kentucky University to go to SACSA and get involved anyway they can. He also encourages his colleagues on the administrative side of Student Affairs to support graduate students attending SACSA. He tells his graduate students, "If you can only join one professional organization, it should be SACSA!".

Like many of us, he didn't know Student Affairs was a profession until, as a graduate student, the hall director he worked for at U.T. Knoxville told him he could work with students as a career! After finishing his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Tennessee at Martin,  he went to the University of Tennessee- Knoxville for a Master's in Educational Psychology (with a minor in Zoology). He later earned a Specialist degree in Student Personnel Services from Western Kentucky before an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University.

After a decade of experience on the administrative side of the profession in housing/residence life at three different institutions (in both graduate and professional roles), he transitioned to the faculty. Dr. Hughey has been shaping the next generation of graduate students as coordinator of the master's degree program in Student Affairs at WKU since 1991; he was promoted to full professor in 2001 and designated a University Distinguished Professor in 2018.

His favorite conference location was Jacksonville, Florida, noting the nice weather and excitement of a big sports game happening in town at the same time as the conference. In addition to his faculty responsibilities at the annual conference, Dr. Hughey has served as Co-Editor of the College Student Affairs Journal (SACSA's academic publication) and won the Melvene Draheim Hardee Award in 2016. His proudest SACSA achievement has been leading the transition of the journal from exclusively hard copy to an online publication,  sharing that during the process he learned the value of networking and relationships.

When Dr. Hughey isn't in his office working with graduate students and keeping an open-door policy, you can find him running about 5 miles per day!

SACSAJournalSACSA Journal Applications

We are seeking applicants for Associate Editor and Editorial Board members for the College Student Affairs Journal.

Associate Editors are responsible for shepherding journal submissions through the review process, and in consultation with the Editor, making acceptance decisions. Associate Editors should have an earned doctorate, expertise in both content and methods germane to student affairs practice, and prior experience as a journal reviewer, ideally with CSAJ. Associate Editors serve a two-year term.

Editorial Board members serve as reviewers for CSAJ submissions. They are the primary gate keepers for ensuring that high-quality scholarship that speaks to student affairs practice is published in CSAJ. We look for Editorial Board members who identify as scholar-practitioners, and have or are developing expertise in one or more specific content areas connected to student affairs, and/or specific research methods.

To apply, please send a cover letter and curriculum vitae or resume to the attention of Dr. Brian Bourke, CSAJ Editor at [email protected]. If you would like more information about either role before applying, please email Brian at [email protected]
