Celebrating the Birth of the Church
|
This Sunday is Pentecost, the day when we celebrate the birth of the church and the giving of the Holy Spirit to the disciples of Jesus.
In the Jewish tradition, Pentecost (for "fifty" days after Passover) is a harvest festival of first fruits that also celebrates the giving of the Torah, or Hebrew law. Our liturgical color for the day, red, symbolizes the Pentecostal fire of the Holy Spirit, as described in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.

Journeying in Faith with Our Youth
|
This Sunday, the 2018 class of confirmands will be confirmed and welcomed into membership during 11:00 a.m. worship. Each month on baptismal Sundays we renew our pledge to support the children and youth of the church; attending the confirmation service is one way to be present with and support them.
We hope you will join us for this service and ask that you keep these youth in prayer as they continue with us on their faith journey.

Marking Dedication Commemoration Sunday
|
This Sunday is Dedication Commemoration Sunday at Fourth Presbyterian Church, declared by Pastor John Timothy Stone in 1914 to be observed on the third Sunday of each May.
One hundred and four years ago, on Sunday, May 10, 1914, the Fourth Church congregation worshiped in the Michigan Avenue Sanctuary for the first time, having moved from its smaller facility on Rush at Superior.
A series of dedicatory services were held the remainder of that week, and later that month, the new Sanctuary and Parish House buildings were host to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, including the assembly's communion service attended by more than 1,800 worshipers.
As we give thanks this weekend for a legacy given us by those who built this church, it is also a time when we remember that we too are caretakers of that legacy, charged with passing it on to those who follow. For information about including Fourth Church in your planned giving and estate plans, contact
Katy Frey Bever (312.981.3380).

Summer Session Begins June 3

With many of our families at Family Camp in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, this weekend, our Sunday School classes will not meet this Sunday or--due to Memorial Day weekend--next Sunday, May 27.
Children are invited to worship with their parents these Sundays--and any Sunday! Be sure to ask an usher for one of our family worship bulletins specially prepared each week for children attending the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services.
On Sunday, June 3 our Summer Sunday School session will begin, with classes offered at 9:30 a.m. only each Sunday. We look forward to children being with us in Sunday School and worship over the summer!
