NAPE news
Dear NAPE Members,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying your fall. I am pleased to welcome our three newest NAPE members, the states of Arizona and Arkansas, and Washington, DC! The NAPE staff and I look forward to working with all of you and your teams as you move forward with Perkins V planning and implementation. This week we will post additional resources on our Perkins V webpage.

We are partnering with Advance CTE, ACTE, and AACC on four regional meetings starting later this month and extending into early December. You can find information on the meetings under "Activities" on the Perkins IV webpage. Janay McClarin, our newest NAPE Program Manager, and I will facilitate each of the meetings, and we will be available to assist state teams in their work. We will be joined by Mimi Lufkin, CEO Emerita, who will serve as one of the national experts present at each meeting. If you are interested in connecting with us during the meetings, please contact Janay McClarin.

We are also gearing up for the 2019 National Summit for Educational Equity, which will be our 40th convening and promises to be our biggest Summit yet! Registration is open, and the Call for Proposals for conference sessions has been released. Please mark the week of April 28, 2019, to join us for the conference and plan to attend one of our preconference workshops focused on NAPE's professional development programs on April 27 and April 28. You can find more at the Summit website.

During the Summit and the next several months, we will engage our members in our strategic planning process, which will kick-off in earnest later this fall. We look forward to your input as we chart our course to continue to build our individual and collective capacity to implement effective solutions to increase access, equity, and diversity in education and careers.

Thank you for your partnership and for your dedication to this critical work.

Warmest regards,
Ben
Oregon PIPE 2015 to the Present: Broadening participation in STEM and CTE
From 2015 to the present, three cohorts of secondary, postsecondary, and STEM Hub partners have participated in NAPE's Program Improvement Process for Equity (PIPE) in order to identify equity gaps (disproportionality) in CTE and STEM and evidence- and research-based strategies to close those gaps. This work was made possible through partnership between Oregon Department of Education and the Office of Community Colleges and Workforce Development.

This past spring and summer, NAPE evaluated the promising practices that have grown out of this work, and these were shared at the August 1st Oregon PIPE Showcase and again last week during the start of the training for the fourth PIPE cohort.

The Oregon PIPE Promising Practices handout outlines the lessons learned, key steps for success, suggestions to avoid pitfalls, and helpful reminders for continuous improvement. Root causes are aligned with strategies that have been effective in increasing participation, retention and/or completion in nontraditional (by gender) and other CTE and STEM programs of study. Under each module are themes that were identified through surveys and follow-up interviews, along with specific examples from institutions and regional teams. These materials were recently updated to address the equity provisions in the newly reauthorized Perkins V.
